It’s A Lipstick Jungle, But The Shades Are All The Same

Lipstick Jungle, the new primetime series based on the 2005 Candace Bushnell novel of the same name, premiers tonight at 10pm. This highly-anticipated show about has drawn comparisons to Sex and The City. And its stars (Brooke Shields, Lindsay Price, and Kim Raver) have been on quite the media blitz lately, including several promotional appearances at Fashion Week’s hottest runway shows.

How many of you will be watching? I’m still on the fence. On the one hand, SATC is one of my all-time faves, and I’m hoping that Lipstick will be a satisfactory successor. But at the same time, why is it that this genre always seems so white-washed?

Yeah, I am aware that Lindsay Price (whose mom is Korean) is on the show, and Cashmere Mafia’s got Lucy Liu…but how come there’s never a brown girl on any of these programs? News flash, TV execs: an African-American socialite/fashionista/successful career-woman is not an oxymoron.

I mean, damn – give me a pair of Jimmy Choo’s and I’ll represent!

No disrespect Daneen!!…but asian americans are so under represented in the media today. I can only name a handful of shows with asian on them, and a handful of asian actors/actresses with reputable careers. With SATC, I can’t even recall a single story line focusing on an Asian character other than Lucy Liu’s guest appearance. I guess maybe the African-American socialite/fashionista/successful career-woman doesn’t need to just be represented on TV because she exists very clearly in real life! Halle Berry for example.

No disrespect Annie, but I like Daneen am I professional African-American woman with a passion for fashion who would like to see women like me on Tv and on the covers and in the pages of the fashion mags that I heart so much! And furthermore, I like most women am a HUGE SATC fan but if you like the fashion sense of Carrie tune in to Girlfriends and check out the fabness that is Tracee Ellis Ross, she is by far one of the best dressed women on TV and she does not get the credit for it!

I’m guessing you aren’t too happy that Jennifer Hudson is acting as Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant in the new SaTC movie huh? I was disappointed to hear it…
