Today, I received a nasty message in the comments section of the Venus Embrace Giveaway post. This is what “anonymous” wrote:

Sorry to be so cynical but one of the winners of the Venus giveaway has the same last name as you. Is that a relative or in-law? If so, I think that is totally unfair to your readers. Now I am wondering if the other winners are all just friends of yours. Hmmm…..not a good look Daneen. šŸ™

First of all, I think it is a cowardly act to come on my blog, publicly accuse me of being a liar and a cheat, but conceal your own identity. So, anonymous…I’m posting my rebuttal on the main page (not in the comments section) so that you, and everyone else who reads Spoiled Pretty, understands that I have nothing to hide and that there is no impropriety going on.

Carrie Baird was randomly selected from the Gillette giveaway entries. Did I worry that this might appear suspect? Yes. But is it fair to disqualify a woman whom I have never met, merely because we share a last name (FYI: Baird is actually a very common surname)? Absolutely not. If my last name was Smith, and I chose a winner with the same last name, would we be having this conversation? Probably not.

I spend an inordinate amount of time coordinating these giveaways. Every Monday, it is my joy to offer each and every one of you an opportunity to win my favorite beauty products. And it absolutely makes my day when I notify a reader that she’s won and she writes back, “Thank you so much, Daneen. I’m so excited to receive my prize. I never win anything!”

Contests aside, I am up to my eyeballs in beauty products…and that’s after I’ve given much of it to my family and close friends. So your theory of my orchestrating fake giveaways is completely and utterly ludicrous.

So, in closing…Anonymous, I hope that you will have the decency to never, ever enter a Spoiled Pretty giveaway again. Because a person who would question and attack my intergrity doesn’t deserve to benefit from my beneficence.

How sad that someone would post such a nasty comment…don’t worry about it, you have a lot of loyal, trusting fans

great rebuttal daneen…i find it a bit odd that someone would be offended at the fact that a winner happened to have the same last name as you. but it is true, if you were ‘smith’ they wouldn’t bat an eyelash…

    Bravo Daneen…

She had that one coming for real. The same thing happened to me during my last contest but the twist was two of the random winners had the same last name so the pissed off commenter insinuated that I gave someone two prizes! Ughhh can’t win can we??

Well said, Daneen! I think your point that it’s unfair to disqualify someone just because they happen to have the same name as you is totally true! I hate “anonymous” commenters on my own blog precisely because it lets people feel like they can get away with more. It’s your blog, run it the way that you want! xo!

Wow, how weak/cowardly/catty. If she were all that bold, she wouldn’t have posted anonymously. Honestly, I don’t think you should have wasted your time responding, but I see your reason for doing so. Either way, keep up the good work!

Good one there.I really dont understand the psychology these kinda people…I received a pretty nasty comment on my blog too…the anonymous writer tried to pass off the nasty comment in the name of being candid…so I decided to have my comments moderated. I hope this person never gets to enter your site. She/ he doesnot deserve being on your site….
    You know…we all love you.

Three cheers for Daneen! Way to stand up for yourself, girl šŸ™‚

    Shame on whoever that was!
It’s so typical for someone to say something that catty and be “anonymous”. If you’re not convinced enough of an allegation like that to own up to it, you obviously shouldn’t even be mentioning it! Geez!

Baird is definitely fairly common… I can think of one or two people I’ve known with it, too!

Definitely very catty, though I can understand being a little concerned… in a recent giveaway I saw, it looked like one person had put in multiple entries, and had won twice by chance. This stuff can happen, but to accuse you of doing it on purpose is horrible.

Plus, I can totally vouch for the legitimacy of the giveaways, being a random winner myself!!

My goodness! It’s as if you OWED everyone something! When I enter any giveaway, I am first and foremost, appreciative of the generosity of the hostess and thankful for the chance!
Well said response to rude comment.

    wow, someone really posted that?
um, even if you did do that, it is still your prerogatived to do so, and how dare they call into question you, or how you run giveaways.

    kisses, and love the blog.

Daneen, this is why I’ve fallen madly in (non-sezual) love with you. We are INCREDIBLY grateful for your giveaways as it is extremely generous of you! Shame on the annonymous lady- must be jealousy! I personally have not yet won a contest, but that doesn’t mean I think the entire thing is rigged!

That sucks! But look at it this way, mean comments are usually a sign that you’re doing something right. šŸ™‚ It’s sad, and kinda backwards, but you’re no one until you have a detractor or two. At least that’s what I tell myself! šŸ™‚

Anonymous thinks she is quite the sleuth, yet seemed to overlook that many unrelated people share the same last names. How ridiculous. And how funny that Anonymous hasn’t reappeared to defend herself! Not so brave after all.

in other words: Anonymous was a sore loser and wanted to cry without giving up their identity because they know that next week they will enter another *fabulous* contest.

PS: I won a contest and I have never met Daneen. I found her through HA! not all winners are friends Anonymous…
