Red lipstick used to really intimidate me. It was something I saw on the runways of New York City, Milan, and Paris; the red carpet; or on Dita Von Teese. I rarely saw anyone attempt this look in real life, which did not help my anxiety!
A few months ago, I instituted a personal beauty rule, to help overcome my fear. This rule is: on Wednesdays, we wear red lipstick. Yes, I was directly inspired by the movie Mean Girls, and their “On Wednesdays we wear pink” rule, and yes, I am totally okay with admitting that.
My first red lipstick is a classic, Russian Red by MAC, which is an intense bluish red. I also purchased their lip liner in Cherry, because a matte red this intense desperately needs lip liner. I do the usual application – line my lips with liner, fill it in with lipstick, and blot away the excess with tissue.
At first, I was really nervous to be trying such a bold makeup statement during the day, but I got a lot of compliments on it, which reassured me that I had achieved the desired effect of looking like a cool girl making a statement with makeup, rather than looking like a crazy person wearing last night’s makeup.
Now that I am more comfortable with this look, I have branched out to a few colors by different brands – like Mary Kay NouriShine Plus Lip Gloss by in Rock ‘n’ Red that looks great on top of the Russian Red, but a bold lip definitely took some getting used to. Red lipstick was a huge trend on the runway for Fall 2012, so now is the perfect time to start experimenting with this fun look!
