Bobbi Brown first arrived on the beauty scene in 1991 with the launch of Bobbi Brown Essentials, and changed the face of makeup with a handful of 10 brown-based lipstick shades created to fill a void in the market of simple, flattering and wearable makeup. Bobbi’s philosophy was simple: “Women want to look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident.” Her unique approach to cosmetics was a long-awaited gift for women who wanted a more natural look.
Twenty years later, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics is a global brand, having expanded beyond lipstick to a full range of color cosmetics, fragrance and skincare. Today, with a presence in more than 1000 doors in 57 countries and 18 free-standing stores, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics is coveted by world renowned makeup artists, celebrities and style makers who appreciate Bobbi’s unique approach to beauty and her ability to translate the latest trends into wearable, real-life looks.
This fall, Bobbi’s seventh book, Pretty Powerful, hits bookshelves. In the book, Bobbi interviews dozens of real women, celebrities, and athletes about what beauty means to them and shows, step-by-step, how to achieve each look. Along the way, she shares her trade secrets for striking eyes, youthful skin, pretty lips, and perfect brows for any age, skin color, or beauty type.
I recently scored an exclusive interview with this makeup maestro. In the following Q&A, Bobbi dishes on her makeup philosophy, everyday routine and #1 beauty tip. It’s a pretty powerful read…
SP: When did your fascination with beauty begin?
BB: My love affair with makeup began at an early age. When I was a young girl I used to apply makeup to all of my dolls and even my family dog.
SP: What was your first big break in the beauty industry?
BB: My first big break into the industry was being asked to do the cover of Vogue with Naomi Campbell.
SP: What is your beauty philosophy?
BB: That every woman is pretty but with the right makeup and tools every woman can be Pretty Powerful. It’s about being who you are, looking like your best self.
SP: What is your everyday beauty routine?
BB: First I use a Tinted Moisturizer to even out my skin. Then, and most importantly, I use concealer and corrector. They are the secrets to the universe instantly making you look more rested and refreshed. I always apply a pop of blush to my cheeks. Nothing makes a women look prettier than a pop of pink blush, it gives the face a lift. I always line my eyes. As you get older it’s important to define the eyes and nothing makes them stand out like eyeliner. Finally I like to polish off my look with a lip gloss. It makes my lips look instantly fuller.
SP: Describe the Bobbi Brown woman.
BB: She is fresh and modern and believes that what you put in your body is just as important as what you put on your face.
SP: Your Shimmer Bricks are some one of my all-time favorite products. In fact, I think I own just about all of them. Can you share some inventive ways to use/apply the Shimmer Bricks?
BB: The great thing about shimmer bricks is that they are double duty products. You can use them on both your eyes and cheeks. Use one or two of the color so your eyes or swipe all of the bars for a beautiful, natural glow on the cheek.
SP: What is your #1 beauty secret/tip?
BB: Never leave the house with concealer and corrector. It makes the biggest change in how you look and you won’t need as much makeup after you’ve applied it! Remember, correctors are pink or peach based to cut the darkness under your eyes and concealers should be yellow-toned and one shade lighter than your foundation.
SP: How has the Bobbi Brown brand evolved over the years, and what’s next?
BB: When I launched in 1991 I came out with only 10 lipsticks! Now I have a line of makeup, skincare, fragrances, books, brushes, etc. I never could have imagined the brand becoming what it is today. I think all of the new social media initiatives we are doing are really exciting. We are able to reach out to so many people through these channels I’m excited to see where it will take us and what we will think of next.
