As many of you know, I am currently pregnant. Very pregnant, in fact. I am due to give birth a week from tomorrow…and I am so ready to meet my little girl.
This pregnancy has been rough. Not that my first pregnancy with my son, Westley, was easy – but this one makes that one seem like a walk in the park. I’ve had quite a few unexpected pregnancy complications and, on top of that, I’ve felt pretty unattractive these past nine months. They say when you’re carrying a girl, she “steals your beauty.” And in my case, the old wives was 100% true.
First, I grew muttonchops. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration. But they were pretty damned close. I’ve always had fine little hairs on the sides of my face. For years, it made me embarassed and I thought about ripping all of those baby hairs out – but then I thought about the upkeep factor and ruled it out. When the baby hairs morphed into muttonchops, I decided it was time for action. So I went to my local threading place and had those puppies waxed off.
Then came the melasma (aka ‘pregnancy mask’). Melasma is blotchy brown patches that develop on the skin due to hormonal changes. My case wasn’t as severe as some of the photos I’ve seen in Google images, but my uneven skin tone was enough to make me seriously self-conscious. There are a million products on the market right now that promise to address hyperpigmentation, but I was afraid to try something new for fear I’d break out (pregnancy also makes my skin more sensitive and reactive). So what’s a pregnant, blotchy beauty blogger to do?
Well, I contacted Dermalogica – my absolute favorite skin care brand – and inquired about their tri-active cleanse, a concentrated cleanser that cleanses, brightens and clarifies. They graciously sent me a bottle to test and the results have been amazing. The first time I used it, I noticed a marked (no pun intended) difference. My skin was glowing immediately after. When I looked into the mirror, it was as if I was looking at an Instagram photo using a really flattering filter. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve been using it once daily for the past 10 days or so and I keep seeing improvements. My skin looks and feels fabulous and I’ve experienced no irritation whatsoever. I am so impressed with this product that I couldn’t wait to tell you all about it. I just wish I had found it earlier in my pregnancy.
If you’ve got hyperpigmentation problems, I highly recommend that you try the tri-active cleanse. Just remember to use sunscreen or a moisturizer with SFP to prevent the dark marks from reappearing.
