Two Scents I Can’t Wait to Spritz This Spring

vera+wang+rock+princess Two Scents I Can’t Wait to Spritz This Spring

Vera Wang Rock Princess

I’ve always fancied myself a princess (if only in the providence of Spoiled Pretty), so it should come as no surprise that Vera Wang’s Princess and Flower Princess reign supreme on my vanity. Next month, Vera adds to the heir to the throne.

She’d trade her tiara in for a new guitar, attend a concert instead of the prom—she is Rock Princess, the dynamic new fragrance by Vera Wang. It’s all about the music, the fashion, and the spirit with this edgy yet seductively sweet essence.

Each verse is equally captivating in the dark, fruity scent that channels sultry rock-star attitude. It takes the stage with an exhilarating intro of succulent white peach, bittersweet red raspberry, and an illuminating flash of vibrant bergamot. The chorus reveals itself in lovely layers of ultra-feminine florals. Hypnotic heliotrope, vintage-inspired rose, night-blooming jasmine, delicate lily, and an unexpected riff of sharp, spicy accents. The melody bridges to a finale, cloaking the essence in the warm, sensual glow of plush cashmere woods, smoldering musk, elegant iris, and creamy coconut. You will not forget her.

The Rock Princess bottle is as rebellious and dark as the downtown clubs where she plays. A smoky glass heart steals the show with sharp faceted edges and cool surfaces. The front of the bottle is covered with heavy metal in a pattern inspired by a Vera Wang fabric design. The crown rocks at the top, in a gunmetal finish, covered with rhinestone studs. Set beneath the crown is a matching ring—the perfect jewelry for playing a solo on the bass or hammering away on the drums.

In April 2009, Vera Wang Rock Princess will be available in 1 oz and 3.4 oz Eau de Parfum – sold for $45 and $72, respectively. A 5 oz Satiny Body Lotion ($32) rounds out the collection.

Prada Infusion de Fleur d’Oranger

I am also dying to get my hands (and pulse points) all over Prada’s newest offering. At the CEW Product Demonstration last month, I stopped by the Prada Infusion d’Iris table to rave about the fragrance. I told the rep how I’ve been hooked since purchasing for Mama Spoiled Pretty in December 2007…and how it has dethroned Hanae Mori Butterfly as my signature scent. After I finished testifying, the rep told me to be on the lookout for an orange incarnation, just in time for spring.

I’ve done a little research on this insider tip, and here’s what I found. Prada will introduce Infusion de Fleur d’Oranger, a new limited edition fragrance, later this month. The perfume is the first in a yearly series of limited edition scents, called the “Ephemeral Infusion Collection.”

Infusion de Fleur d’Oranger was developed by perfumer Daniela Andrier, and key notes include orange blossom, tuberose and jasmine.

The eau de parfum will be available in three sizes: 1.7 oz ($74), 3.4 oz ($100), and 6.75 oz ($135). The line also includes a 8.5 oz Hydrating Body Lotion ($52) and 33.8 oz Perfumed Bath and Shower Gel ($50).

Scooped By Oprah: Kai Body Buffer

kai body buffer Scooped By Oprah: Kai Body BufferIn the winter of 2007, Oprah named Kai’s Body Buffer as one of her Favorite Things. “Bathing is an art form and nobody enjoys it more than I do,” she said. More than a year later, I can finally appreciate why Oprah is so enamored with Kai.

Every morning when I lather up with the Kai Body Buffer, my cold and uninviting shower/tub hybrid is instantly transformed into an island paradise. Infused with exotic perfumes and natural essences (including palm, coconut and olive oils), the hypo-allergenic sponge foams when wet – gently cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing my winter-worn skin. The suds are so intoxicatingly fragrant that I don’t want to rinse them off; the scent is nothing short of divine. I want to smell like Kai every second of every hour of every day. Next on my wish list is Kai Eau de Parfum…because I’m quite serious about wanting to live my life enveloped in this exotic aroma.

Gals-on-the-go will love Kai’s Body Buffer because it’s an simple way to fit some much-needed pampering into your jam-packed lifestyle.

A set of two sponges (30 uses each) retails for $36.

Hand Cream and Happy Memories

juara+candlenut+hand+and+body+balm Hand Cream and Happy Memories
I have heard the sense of smell referred to as the ‘most memorative’ of the five senses, because the part of the brain responsible for our sense of smell (the limbic system) is related to feelings and memory.

So I shouldn’t have been surprised when one whiff of Juara’s Candlenut Hand and Body Balm transported me back in time twenty-one years, when I held my baby sister for the very first time. It’s so strange and amazing how that memory, long buried in the recesses of my mind, came flooding back thanks to lotion! I don’t know what my newborn baby sister and Candlenut Hand and Body Balm have in common, but it’s something powerful. Something I can’t shake. It astounds me that I can’t remember what I wore to work three days ago and I don’t know what I ate for dinner last Friday, but I can clearly recall Lauren’s soft and clean scent when she was just a few hours old.

Every time my hands get dry and I smooth on Candlenut Hand and Body Balm, I smile. Not just because the scent summons a very happy memory; but also because the rich formula deeply nourishes my winter-ravaged hands and leaves them soft and supple, with a velvety finish.

Product Polygamy Week: Bath and Body

product+polygamy+week Product Polygamy Week: Bath and Body
It’s Friday, which means the final installment of Product Polygamy Week. Read on for the Spoiled Pretty picks that will rock your body…

PERFUME
The Barb:
L’Instant de Guerlain
l%27instant+de+guerlain Product Polygamy Week: Bath and BodyI was searching high and low for my review of L’Instant de Guerlain and finally realized that I never wrote one…which makes no sense because this perfume is my signature scent. This floral Oriental fragrance is one of the most beautiful and complex scents I have ever smelled. Every time I wear it, I just brace myself for the compliments – and it certainly leaves a lasting impression. L’Instant is described as a “soft, sexy scent comprised of an intricate blend of interwoven fragrance harmonies, like citrus honey, magnolia inclusion, and amber harmony.” I’m no master perfumer, so to be honest, that means nothing to me; to my untrained nose, this perfume has a soft and powdery scent that dries down to a sensual, musky vanilla. I imagine that L’Instant would be a staple on Charlotte York-Goldenblatt’s vanity, but Carrie Bradshaw would definitely sneak a spritz when she’s visiting Charlotte’s Park Avenue apartment.

The Nicki: Philosophy Amazing Grace Perfumed Body Spritz
I’m a fan of potent perfumes, and I’m a little heavy-handed in the application. So I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the light, clean scent of Philosophy’s Amazing Grace Perfumed Body Spritz. After smelling it on me, my sister (who I usually have to bribe for compliments) asked me what I was wearing. When I told her what it was, she said that I smelled very nice. I was like, “OMG. Stop. The. Presses. My sister just said something nice…to me!” Needless to say, it has become a staple in my daily beauty ritual. And sometimes I even find myself spraying the air and linens with Amazing Grace, like it’s Febreze or something. That’s how good it smells.

The Margene:
Deauville pour Homme by Michel Germain
My new favorite scent isn’t new at all. In fact, we have a decade-long history. Ten years ago, in a perfume shop in the Bahamas, I fell in love with Deauville pour Homme by Michel Germain. But I was too broke to buy it and Mama Spoiled Pretty wouldn’t lend me the money to buy a men’s cologne. Then a few months ago, Deauville and I were reunited in a suburban Philadelphia TJ Maxx. The icing on the cake? It only cost $9.99!!! It was fate…now we’re reunited and it smells so good, though Señor Spoiled Pretty is a little weirded out.

SHOWER GEL/SOAP
The Barb:
Jaqua Buttercream Frosting Shower Crème
jaqua Product Polygamy Week: Bath and BodyNot only do Jaqua’s Buttercream Frosting products pamper my parched skin, they smell like heaven – a sweet tooth’s version of heaven, anyway. Like vanilla frosting with a hint of fresh strawberries, Jaqua’s Buttercream Frosting Shower Creme smells so much like the real thing, I have to remind myself that it’s not edibile. I can only hope that Jaqua is developing hair care, shaving cream, toothpaste, antiperspirant, and contact lens solution…so that every square inch of me can smell saccharinely sweet.

The Nicki:
Jo Malone Orange Blossom Shower Gel
I once had someone ask me, “If you were going to take your very last bath on earth, what oil, salt, or bubbly brew would you use to make it especially soak-worthy?” My answer: without a doubt, it would be Jo Malone Orange Blossom Shower Gel. The scent is like heaven.

The Margene:
Johnson’s Vanilla Oatmeal Body Wash
The latest installment of my Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week series featured Johnson’s Vanilla Oatmeal Body Wash. And for good reason. The creamy formula lathers up nice, thoroughly cleanses my eczema-prone skin without stripping, the oatmeal relieves my itchy scratchies and the subtle vanilla scent is warm and comforting. And it’s less than $5.

LOTION/MOISTURIZER
The Barb:
Johnson’s Softlotion 24 Hour Moisturizer
I am a big fan of Johnson’s Lotions, particularly Softlotion 24 Hour Moisturizer. This non-greasy, fast-absorbing lotion smells like baby oil and is enriched with hydrating emollients and natural lipids ingredients to maintain hydration and prevent moisture loss. It keeps the ashiness at bay and leaves my skin touchably soft all day.

The Nicki:
100% Pure Organic Virgin Coconut Nourishing Body Cream
100+percent+pure Product Polygamy Week: Bath and BodyI recently fell hard and fast for 100% Pure’s Organic Virgin Coconut Nourishing Body Cream, which worked wonders on my desiccated skin. The scent is so yummy fantastic that I thought to myself, “the world would be a better place if everything smelled exactly like this.” Even Mama Spoiled Pretty, who complains that my favorite scents are too cloying, said that Organic Virgin Coconut Nourishing Body Cream smells good enough to eat. Ironically, it doesn’t remind me, at all, of coconut…fresh baked oatmeal cookies is more accurate.

The Margene:
Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil
No matter what your skin situation, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil is “right on top of that, Rose” (shout out to Amber and other fellow fans of Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead). This preservative-free, lightweight formula contains an exclusive blend of key ingredients for scars, stretch marks, dry, damaged skin, uneven skin tone, aging skin, lines and wrinkles. The oil locks in moisture; your skin will look and feel soft, with a radiant sheen. The product sinks in on contact and the formula is non-greasy and non-staining, so you don’t have to wait to get dressed.

HAIR REMOVAL
The Barb:
Schick Intuition
When Schick unveiled Intuition a few years ago, I instantly hated it. The music in the commercial was that disgusting pop song Intuition by Jewel. Don’t get me wrong. I dig Jewel…Pieces of You Jewel. Not pop tart Jewel. But when my Aunt Bunchie gave me a whole bunch of Intuitions for Christmas that year, I couldn’t be a Scrooge and throw ‘em out. So I tried them and fell in love right then and there. You would think that the ‘skin conditioning solid’ would prevent the blade from getting close to the skin, but you would be wrong. Intuition is the closest shave I’ve ever had. It’s really all I use at home.

The Nicki: Gillette Venus Embrace
Now on the road, that’s another story. When I travel, I pack Venus Embrace; it travels better than the Intuition. The pivoting head allows the blades to stay in constant contact with the skin, even around nick-prone areas like knees and ankles. The soft grip handle provides increased control in the shower, and the razor comes with this super cool ‘ShowerPod’ that suctions to the tile and conveniently stores the razor and extra blades. Pair it with Satin Care Alluring Avocado Shave Gel, which is intensely moisturizing and has a light, fresh scent.

The Margene:
threading Product Polygamy Week: Bath and BodyMiracle Threading (King of Prussia Mall, PA)
If you’re not in Philadelphia, you’re missing out. On New Year’s Day, while shopping at the King of Prussia Mall, I found myself in front of the Miracle Threading kiosk across from Sephora (excellent location). Usually, there are ladies lined up to get their eyebrows waxed and whiskers get pulled from their chinny chin chins; but on the 1st, there was no one. I imagine that most of these hirsute regulars were home nursing their hangovers. So, based on my mom’s and sister’s rave reviews (and the lack of a line), I decided to sit in the chair and let Pina go to town. Did she ever. A few short minutes later, my upper lip was baby butt smooth and my eyebrows were shaped to perfection. Literally, my eyebrows had never looked so well-groomed. Pina is precise; when I returned home that day, I gave my eyebrows and upper lip a close inspection – and there was not one stray hair. Pina is on point, so if you’re in the Philadelphia area, get yourself over to Miracle Threading (on the upper level of the Plaza – as I said, across from Sephora). Yes, it’s a little weird getting threaded in public, but when you see the finished product, you’ll be glad you sucked it up and acted like a big girl. Call 484.300.7945 for more information.

Well, that concludes Product Polygamy Week. Did you fancy? I hope that you take advantage of my sage advice and enter into some loving relationships with these products. Are you sad to see this theme week to come to an end and jonesing for another fix? Visit Amber’s final post before you start pouting.

And tune into HBO’sseason premiere of Big Love on Sunday, followed by the absolutely hilarious Flight of the Conchords.

PS – Big props to Beth at Glamour.com for giving Amber and I a BIG link LOVE yesterday!

100% Pure Amuse Bouche Leaves Me Craving More

100% Pure Amuse Bouche Leaves Me Craving More
If you’re a foodie and/or a fan of Bravo’s Top Chef, you’re likely familiar with the term amuse-bouche. An amuse-bouche is a single, bite-sized hors d’œuvre – served to excite the taste buds, to both prepare the guest for the meal and to offer a glimpse into the chef’s approach to cooking.

This culinary expression was the first thing that came to mind when 100% Pure sent me some one-use samples of their products. I fell hard and fast for the Organic Virgin Coconut Nourishing Body Cream, which worked wonders on my desiccated skin. Mr. Spoiled Pretty thinks it smells just like “buttery rolls, right out of the oven.”

organic+virgin+coconut 100% Pure Amuse Bouche Leaves Me Craving MoreCoconut milk cream, cocoa butter, vitamins, softening fruit oils, and organic virgin coconut oil sink into skin – softening and hydrating the hell outta your hide. But you know what’s not seeping into your pores? Icky ish like artificial fragrances, synthetic chemicals, toxic preservatives, petro-chemicals or any other toxins. 100% Pure is just that…finally, you can understand the label without needing a pesky medical degree.

So where was I going with this review? Oh, yes…amuse-bouche. The tiny packet of luxurious lotion left me wanting more – a full-sized bottle of the Organic Virgin Coconut Nourishing Body Cream, accompanied by the Organic Virgin Coconut Shower Gel and Body Scrub, specifically. I’m looking forward to future explorations of this brand, and I enthusiastically encourage you to do the same.

100% Pure products are available at QVC, Beauty.com, Bath & Body Works, and 100percentpure.com.

Olay Body Wash Plus Stage Five Clingers

olay+body+wash+plus+spa+exfoliating+ribbons Olay Body Wash Plus Stage Five Clingers
A few months ago, Marie Claire named Olay Body Wash plus Spa Exfoliating Ribbons as one of the ’25 Beauty Products That Will Change Your Life.’ I really enjoy Marie Claire and typically trust their reviews, but this was straight up hyperbole.

Olay Body Wash plus Spa Exfoliating Ribbons isn’t the worst body wash that I’ve ever tried, but it by no means changed my life. The creamy lather foams up nicely and feels silky on skin. The ocean-y fragrance is pleasant, and subtly lingers. But, unfortunately, the scent isn’t the only thing that likes to stick around.

smurfette Olay Body Wash Plus Stage Five ClingersThe microbeads don’t dissolve, like you might expect them to. Rather, they cling to your skin…so when you’re rinsing clean, you need to check (and double-check) yourself to make sure the blue beads aren’t hiding anywhere. And be prepared for your shower/tub to look like Smurfette just got done exfoliating in there instead of you.

There are plenty of better body washes on the market, so I can’t recommend this one. Even though it costs less than $6, I still expect to be impressed. Yes, Olay Body Wash plus Spa Exfoliating Ribbons cleanses skin and gently buffs skin. But, then again, so does a bar of Dove soap and a washcloth…and this combo won’t leave stage five clingers littering your shower floor.
