To become a successful makeup artist entails a whole lot and I could think of a million things to say here. Here are five tips to help:* Be passionate about what you do because it shows in your work.

* Figure out what area of work you like best (fashion, celeb, editorial, etc) and try to focus on that.

* Study and research art and fashion – both past and present. It’s important to know and be able to execute period looks, etc.

Hi Mario!

What is the best concealer and how should it be applied for the best coverage? -Liz icon smile Makeup Mondays With Mario: Best Under Eye Concealer

undereye+concealer Makeup Mondays With Mario: Best Under Eye ConcealerLiz,

The best concealer really depends on the skin or area you want to cover up. If I had to choose one right now, I’d say the Lift Concealer by Make Up For Ever. Apply some with a brush to undereyes, blend with a damp sponge and set with translucent powder using the same damp sponge. Brush away that excess powder and voila – you’ve got flawless, creaseless undereyes!

Hi Mario!

Do you have makeup tips for making the nose look more narrow or smaller? Thank you! -Athena

nose+makeup Makeup Mondays With Mario: Slimming A Wide NoseAthena,

Making the nose look more narrow or smaller can be challenging at first and it’s very easy to overdo it. I remember back when I first tried to contour a model’s nose on a shoot, the photographer said “What is that muddy stuff on her nose?” LOL…I overdid it!

Here are a couple of tricks/tips I recommend:

Make sure the nose has a base on it and set it with some loose powder. Using a soft bristled brush (eye shadow/blending brush), dip a bit into a matte bronzer or blush that’s a few shades deeper then your skin. Tap off the excess powder and, starting at the inside corner of the brow, softly shade going down along the sides of the nose. Again, it’s very important that you start soft. It should look like a natural shadow and not an eyeshadow. Using a lighter shade either shimmer or matte, apply on the bridge of the nose. Blend with a clean brush if there are any lines.

Rihanna's 20/20 Frosty Nude Lip Look

rihanna+20 20+makeup+lip+gloss Rihanna's 20/20 Frosty Nude Lip LookOn Friday night, I was among the 8.2 million people who watched Rihanna’s 20/20 interview. But afterwards, while most people were thinking, “Wow…that Rihanna is so brave to publicly discuss such a horrifying personal tragedy” or “That jackass, Chris Brown, deserves whatever is coming to him” – I was thinking, “What products can I use to copy Rihanna’s icy nude lip look?”

So I did what any self-respecting beauty junkie would do. I broke out my lip gloss/lipstick stash and played makeup mad scientist/mixologist. I found that creating Rihanna’s 20/20 look is quite easy to do. All you need is a nude lipstick that is lighter than your complexion, and a silver gloss. Be sure to apply foundation to lips before trying this look, as the foundation will help cancel out any pink in your lips and let the lip color stand alone.

Here are some combos that I think would pass RiRi scrutiny:

2) MAC Lipstick in Modesty + MAC Dazzleglass in She-Zam
3) Estee Lauder Pure Color Gloss Stick in Nude Almond + MAC Dazzleglass in She-Zam
4) Julie Hewett Lipstick in Biba + MAC Dazzleglass in She-Zam
5) Victoria’s Secret Sheer Gloss Stick in Exposed + MAC Dazzleglass in She-Zam
6) Benefit Full-Finish Lipstick in Lady’s Choice + MAC Dazzleglass in She-Zam
7) + MAC Dazzleglass in She-Zam
8) This is just to show what MAC Dazzleglass in She-Zam looks like on its own

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Keeping Foundation On Your Face

mmwmd large Makeup Mondays With Mario: Keeping Foundation On Your Face

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Mario,

I have a foundation that I love, but it seems to get on everything! I work in an office and tend to pass around papers that have brown smudges on them whenever I wear that foundation. Is there anything I can do to keep the foundation on my face and not on everything else? -Khalia
woman+powder+puff Makeup Mondays With Mario: Keeping Foundation On Your FaceKhalia,

I can totally sympathize with you, as someone that constantly gets makeup “spots” on just about everything. Here’s how to keep your foundation on your face and off the paper work:

Try using a oil free moisturizer if you aren’t already. Makeup that smears off the skin easily probably isn’t being set well. With a velour powder puff, set your makeup by pressing translucent loose powder all over face after foundation. If this doesn’t help, you can try a makeup sealer. They come in spray bottles and help keep everything in place. Lastly and most important – try to stop touching your face! If you didn’t touch your face, your hands wouldn’t get makeup on them. It’s a hard habit to break, but not impossible.

Hope this helps you out. Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!xo,

Hello Mario,

I love your work and wanted to ask you how to create the perfect cat eye with liquid eyeliner since I have shaky hands it has been impossible for me!! Lots of love!

-Mariel

sephora+cat+eye Makeup Mondays With Mario: Cat Eye TutorialMariel,

Creating a great cat eye with liquid liner can be challenging but with a little practice, I’m certain you can perfect it!

Here’s how you should do it. Look into a mirror and tilt your head up a bit so that the lashline (where liner will go) isn’t touching the crease of the eye. Gently stretch your eye outward to prevent blinking. Start lining the outer corner first, going towards the inner corner. Make sure that the line gets thinner towards the inner corners. Now go back to the outter corner and wing the liner out and up a bit for the cat eye effect. If you mess up, wipe the corners with a Q-tip and try again. Good luck, gorgeous!

Mario
