Do You Like My New Nude Lip Look?

nude+lip+gloss Do You Like My New Nude Lip Look?

Can you guess what lipstick/gloss combination I used to create this nude lip look?

Okay…stop guessing. It’s a trick question because there’s actually no lipstick involved. I stole a tip from Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic:

I applied a tiny* bit of foundation (here, Clinique Superfit Makeup in Nutty) to partially cancel out the pink tones in my lips; then I coated my lips in MAC Clear Lipglass.

Genius!

*Make sure you just use a tiny bit of foundation. Too much will have you looking like crackhead Tyrone Biggums from Chappelle Show.

Interview With Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashian’s Makeup Artist!

mario+dedivanovic Interview With Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashians Makeup Artist!Happy Monday, my pretties. It’s a very happy day, indeed…because I’ve got a treat for you.

Remember how awesome it was when Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, answered some of my beauty questions on Kim’s blog? Well, brace yourselves…because I’m taking awesomeness to a whole nuther level.

I scored an interview…the interview…with makeup master Mario. Read on to learn more about the man behind his muse’s beauty-licious look…

Mario Dedivanovic began his beauty career at a young age as a makeup artist behind New York City retail counters. Now- after almost a decade of working with models, actresses and entertainers – Mario’s renown has skyrocketed, securing him a place among the world’s best fashion and celebrity makeup professionals. He has created countless editorial and red carpet looks for celebrities, all of whom showcase the skill, talent, personality and attention to detail that is brought to every transformation he creates.

In addition to Kim Kardashian, Mario Dedivanovic’s amazing celebrity clientele has included Natasha Bedingfield, Adrienne Bailon, Lil’ Kim, Gisele and many others. His work has graced the pages of dozens of magazines, including Glamour, Teen Vogue, Marie Claire and People. When he’s not traveling to sets, runway shows and events, Mario lives in his hometown of New York City.

SP: When did your fascination with makeup begin?
MD:
It began when I was 17 years old and working at Sephora. I was surrounded by makeup and women would ask me for my opinion and help with their makeup. I jumped right in to help and fell in love. When I saw the way a woman looked and felt after applying a little bit of makeup, I was fascinated. I wanted to do it more and more!

SP: What was your first big break in the beauty industry?
MD:
Hmmm, I’m honestly not really sure if there was a first “big break.” When I signed with my first agency, I felt official. Also, when I got my first ad campaign for Head and Shoulders some years ago.

kim+kardashian+makeup+pic Interview With Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashians Makeup Artist!SP: Describe your makeup style.
MD:
Polished and classic. I’m obsessed with making a face look very polished and pretty. Kim K says my signature style is timeless and flawless makeup that looks airbrushed. What do you think? LOL.

SP: Which makeup artists do you most admire?
MD:
Max Factor, Kevyn Aucoin, Francois Nars, Pat McGrath, Charlotte Tilbury – the list goes on and on. These are makeup artists whose work really made and makes an impact in the industry and inspires so many people around the world.

SP: How did you become Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist?
MD:
I met Kim Kardashian a couple of years ago when I was booked to do her makeup for a cover shoot for Social Life magazine. She loved the makeup and we totally worked really well together. She is definitely my muse.

SP: What do you like most about working with Kim?
MD:
Besides her gorgeous face, the fact that she just loves makeup and loves getting it done. She has trust in me and lets me do my thing.

kim+kardashian+mario+dedivanovic+makeup Interview With Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashians Makeup Artist!

SP: What other celebrities are you dying to work with?
MD:
Meryl Streep, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Michelle Obama, Linda Evangelista…amongst others. To me these women are beautiful, inspiring and so good at what they do.

SP: What would be your dream makeup assignment?
MD:
To create my own line of amazing and affordable makeup that would be available to women worldwide. That is my ultimate goal. When I do that, I will feel like I can really ‘touch’ people around the world and make them feel more beautiful.

kim+kardashian+beauty Interview With Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashians Makeup Artist!SP: For a Kim Kardashian wannabe, what are the top five products she needs in her makeup bag (and why)?
MD:
1) Concealer that’s lighter then the skin color to brighten the under eye area. Kim loves to be lighter under the eye, and so do I!
2) Powder – Kim is definitely a matte makeup girl. She likes to be glowy, but in the right areas. Powder always on the t-zone.
3) Black eyeliner – need I say more?
4) Mascara – She loves big lashes.
5) A nude lip gloss – just because icon wink Interview With Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashians Makeup Artist!

SP: What products and techniques do you use to create Kim’s gorgeous golden tan glow?
MD:
Most of the time, I use powder products to create the ‘golden glow.’ I find that powders look better for longer periods of time. I frame her face (forehead, hollows of the cheeks and jawline) with a matte bronzer. Right now, I’m using the Smashbox bronzers in both colors as well as the Dior matte bronzer. After, I apply a golden, shimmery products to the cheekbones and bridge of nose. Trace Gold by MAC is a great color/shade. The trick is to blend everything very well so there are no lines or blotches.

SP: What tips do you have for choosing a nude lip color to flatter your complexion?
MD:
Choosing a nude lip color can sometimes be tricky and look almost “chalky.” I like to make the center of the lips the most nude and blend it out to the rest of lip. If you have darker/tanner skin, go for nude shades that are not too pinky or white and instead more yellow/golden. If you have light/pale skin, do the opposite.

SP: Any nude lipstick/lip gloss recommendations for, say, a brown-skinned beauty blogger with Halle Berry’s complexion?
MD:
LOL! There’s a really inexpensive color I like to use sometimes…called your foundation! Try putting a bit of your foundation on the lips with a clear gloss on top. It looks oh so good.

mac+prep+and+prime+skin Interview With Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashians Makeup Artist!SP: What products are must-haves for summer (and why)?
MD:
Primer. Right now I’m using Smashbox’s primer and MAC’s primer. It helps the makeup to stay put and spread well. Oil blotting tissues – instead of re-applying powder all day, blot your face to absorb the oil. B-dazzle by Giella custom blend cosmetics – it’s an amazing color (loose shadow or can be made into a pencil) that looks good on every skin tone. Apply it to the inner corner of the eyes to brighten up and separate the eyes. It reflects great in the sun too.

SP: If you could only use one brand of makeup for the rest of your career, what would it be (and why)?
MD: Oh no. I think I would change careers! That’s the most difficult question to answer and would require a lot of research. Ask me when I create my own line. icon wink Interview With Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashians Makeup Artist!

SP: What is your #1 beauty secret/tip?
MD:
Blending. For me, blending is so important. Invest in good brushes and sponges, and blend until you can’t blend anymore!

Who Is Jenn Falik?

Posted on by daneen in Beauty Tips, Interview | Leave a comment
Jenn+Falik Who Is Jenn Falik?

If there was a Jeopardy-style game show with beauty categories, I’m pretty confident that I could go on a Ken Jennings-esque streak. But there’s one gal who might give me a run for my money.

jenn+falik+beauty+expert Who Is Jenn Falik?Beauty savant Jenn Falik is the go-to resource for the media when it comes to learning the latest tips, trends and must-haves. From teaching her kindergarten classmates the merits of Bonne Bell Lip Balm, to spending her free time in college helping friend (and friends of friends) put together the perfect first date outfit, Jenn Falik has been a go-to for style advice pretty much since she started talking.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and taking a job on Wall Street, Jenn quickly realized that her talents were much better spent advising on clothing and makeup than consulting on credit card marketing. So she embarked on a career in fashion and beauty, as a publicist. In working with some of the most prestigious brands in the world, Jenn hones her skills at predicting and interpreting trends. It is a combination of her insider circle, her ability to dole out practical advice and her natural instinct to share everything she learns with everyone she knows, which led Jenn to become a style and beauty expert.

If you’re a product junkie who owns a television, you’ve likely seen Jenn sharing her tips on The View, The Today Show, The Rachael Ray Show, E! News and The Tyra Banks Show.

I recently had an opportunity to pick Jenn’s beauty-filled brain…and the girl knows her stuff. So if your beauty routine’s in jeopardy (baby), read on…

SP: When did you first fall in love with beauty?
JF:
When I started working in Beauty PR about 8 years ago. I always liked buying new products and playing around with makeup, but I think it became a passion (borderline obsession) once I started really learning all that goes on behind the scenes in the beauty industry, and seeing what significant differences the right beauty routine can make in a woman’s self esteem.

SP: What is your beauty philosophy?
JF: Look at your beauty routine as an extension of your personality – and stock your makeup bag with products that you love. It isn’t about the trend of the moment, it is about your interpretation of the trend of the moment that fits with your style and as such, every product you own becomes a timeless beauty staple.

SP: Any celebrity girl crushes, in terms of beauty?
JF:
Kate Hudson. I love her natural California girl beauty- the beachy hair, the glowing skin.

SP: What are the five products that you can’t live without right now?
JF:
Stila Kitten Eyeshadow: I have been using every single day since I was in high school and don’t plan on stopping- ever.

Pond’s Clean Sweep Original Clean Wet Cleansing Towelettes: They remove every ounce of makeup – even waterproof mascara. Love waking up and not seeing makeup smeared all over my pillow!

Lipstick+Queen+gloss Who Is Jenn Falik?Lipstick Queen Shine Red Sinner Gloss: Just looking at that giant tub of delicious cherry colored gloss makes me smile. It is the ultimate lip indulgence for a true beauty junkie.

Lancome PowerBoost Lash Primer: This is the perfect first step to full lashes. People always ask me if I have false lashes on- I don’t. It is a combo of this topped off with Stila MAJOR Major lash. I am not coordinated enough to put lashes on!

Priori Advanced AHA Hand & Body Revitalizing Lotion: A great daily moisturizer for this time of year to refresh and brighten skin for short summer dresses and beach days.

SP: What’s the best beauty tip/secret you’ve ever heard?
JF: I once read a tip from a celebrity makeup artist about always applying your bronzer in the shape of a 3 on each side of your face. So, you hit your forehead, cheeks and jawline evenly for a super natural looking all-over glow.

SP: What was your most embarrassing beauty moment?
JF: There were a few really bad perms in middle school, and on more than one occasion in the early 90’s I overdid the Sun In. All of my beauty mistakes have been hair-related, come to think of it. Oh, wait – I did go through a phase where I was obsessed with dewy skin and used to put way too much shimmer balm on every single day. Now I look at photos and realize I actually looked really sweaty, not gorgeously glow-ey.

SP: Which beauty trend(s) do you wish would die?
JF:
Sparkly body lotion – the kind with glitter in it. Come to think of it – anything with glitter in it.

SP: What products are must-haves for summer?
JF:
MISSION Skincare Fast-Drying Sunscreen SPF 30+ Spray is perfect for me because it is effortless, and I can get lazy on hot summer days. The spray is light and gives you full coverage, and it isn’t sticky at all. Plus, even when I get kinda sweaty, this stays on.

hissyfit+saving+face Who Is Jenn Falik?HissyFit Saving Face SPF 50. This new brand from Australia boasts an amazing tinted moisturizer with high SPF and anti-aging benefits. It is a little thicker than my usually tinted moisturizer, but I feel like that is what gives it such staying power.

DDF Pedi Cream has become part of my nightly beauty ritual- I slather it on before bed and throw on socks in an effort to have somewhat smooth heels for summer sandals.

Essie Polish in Lovie Dovie
is going to be by go-to shade this summer because it goes seamlessly from the beach to a black tie wedding- just bright enough to be exciting, but not too bright so as to be distracting.

June Jacobs After Sun Hydrator is the perfect post-sun product, and even though I don’t lay out, I use it after being outside too long at the never ending series of outdoor summer weddings I seem to be attending. It refreshes my skin, hydrates and, best part, helps prolong the life of your tan.

GO SMiLE Touch Ups
are my secret weapon against pigging out this summer. I have somewhat of an insatiable appetite, and that is a killer when it comes to swimsuit season. So, after eating, I use one of these and my mouth feels so clean and minty, I have no interest in going back for seconds. Plus, it polishes my teeth so they make my itty-bitty hint of bronze look that much more tawny.

stila+smudge+pot+24k Who Is Jenn Falik?SP: If you could only patronize one beauty brand for life, which would it be?
JF:
Stila. I love everything about it. The products, the packaging, everything. I always say if I was re-incarnated as a makeup brand, I would be Stila. My daily routine would be Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF15, Convertible Color in Poppy, Sun SPF15 bronzer, 24K Smudge Pot, Kitten Eyeshadow and MAJOR Major lash mascara. Top it off with a touch of the Hair Refresher in Crème Bouquet for both style and scent. Perfectly pretty.

forever+21+hairband+elastic+ball Get A Handle On Your Hair Elastics

Last week, BellaSugar recommended this Fab Hairband Elastic Ball from Forever 21, for you gals who have major probs keeping track of your hair elastics. At $3.50, it’s definitely a cheap and chic way to stay organized. But here’s my tip (and it’s free)…

You know that mini hairbrush that lives in the bottom of your handbag? Wrap, like, 10 hair elastics around the handle; you’ll never be caught in a bad hair situation, without a way to reign in your mane.

You’re welcome.

When Dior Beauty invited Troy Jensen to their first annual Christian Dior Beauty Lunch benefiting Operation Smile, he invited his favorite muse, Kim Kardashian. On his blog, Troy dishes about his inspiration for Kim’s makeup look – and how he pulled it all off.

“I sent Kim a collage of images of Ava Gardner as inspiration for the look i created. I wanted to create a look that was old Hollywood glam with a touch of a modern chic. I first prepped Kim’s skin with an eye cream and moistureizer, then blended a concealer under the eyes, forehead, down the center of the nose and blended well into her skin. I then applied a liquid foundation to give a subtle golden glow. I set with a finishing powder and dusted a Rose Pink powder blush to the apples of her cheeks. I applied a bronzer to the outer perimeter of temples, down her cheek bones, and jaw line. The bronzer was a golden tan with a subtle shimmer. When I’m creating a flawless complexion on Kim, I feel she looks stunning with a little natural gleam to the skin. For the eyes I wanted to create a daytime glam. Which involved a subtle golden smokey eye, glowing complexion, and a sheer red lip. I first blended a golden bronze eyeshadow onto the entire eyelid using a matte bone color in the arch of the brow. I then lined her entire eye with a chocolate brown eyeliner, curled and coated her lashes and added a few individual eyelashes to just the ends of her eyes for an old Hollywood flare. I topped the look off with defining her lips with a neutral lip color and filled in her entire lip with a sheer Cherry red lip gloss. This look is sexy, Its fresh, Its glamorous, and perfect for the alluring Kim Kardashian.”
