For the 81st annual Academy Awards, makeup artist Rachel Goodwin dressed Diane Lane’s beautiful face in products from Chanel.

diane lane academy awards 2009 Oscars 2009 Beauty: Diane LaneBeauty Inspiration:
“The first thing I noticed when I saw Diane was her va va voom black dress! I wanted her makeup to be super sexy and stong, like she is. Because it was the Oscars, I focused on bumping up the eyes with lots of mascara and lashes, and sent her down the carpet glowing and gorgeous.”

Beauty Tips:
Rachel opened up Diane’s eyes with browns and taupes from the Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow in Demure. She created a sultry look with soft browns in the crease and a soft ivory on the lids up to the brow bone. The eyes were lined with an Elizabeth Arden smoky eye pencil, and several coats of Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Noir-Black gave her a dramatic, seductive look. To
give Diane’s skin a dewy, glowing look, Rachel applied Chanel Teint Innocence Naturally Luminous Fluid Makeup mixed with a bit of Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer. On the contours of the cheeks, she applied a peach cream blush from Jouer. Finally, to complete the strong, sexy look, Rachel gave Diane a bold orangey red lip with Chanel Hydrabase Lipstick in Fuego.

“My inspiration for Natalie on Oscar night was her dress,” explained Jeanine Lobell. The colour was a fantastic orchid, and being Rodarte, I wanted to do cool punk rock sexy fairy make up.”

natalie portman academy awards 2009 Oscars 2009 Beauty: Natalie PortmanJeanine was going for a smoky eye, and used Chanel Silky Eye Shadow Duo in Orient Express. She used the pale pink as a base and the dark purple smoked around the eye on the lid and smudged in lower lash line. She added Chanel Intense Eye Pencil in Noir inside the eye, and lots of Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Noir-Black for thick sexy lashes. She used Chanel Perfect Brows in Brun, using the two colours to make a strong brow, but keeping it soft. Jeanine then used Chanel Powder Blush in Narcisse, a flattering, bright pink shade, high on the cheekbones. She then added Chanel Glossimer in Galactic for a more pale lavender lip. Finally, for a sexy, bronze sheen, Jeanine applied Chanel Sheer Brilliance in Sunkissed on Natalie’s arms, shoulders, and décolleté.

Kevin Mancuso, Creative Director for Nexxus Salon Hair Care, created the modern and romantic updo worn by presenter Natalie Portman. With a sweeping side part and soft curl, pinned into a beautiful knot at the nape of her neck, the look was deceptively easy to create. Kevin described how to get the look below in a few simple steps.

Get the Look

natalie portman academy awards 2009 hair Oscars 2009 Beauty: Natalie PortmanStep 1:
* Apply a volumizing styler to the roots, like Nexxus Root Exxtend Volumizing Root Lifter, to add body into the hair.
* Distribute a medium-hold mousse, such as Nexxus Mousse Plus Volumizing Foam Styler, throughout hair to and maintain and support the structure of the style. More modern updos employ product instead of teasing to build body, for a softer, healthier look.
* Blow dry hair with a large round brush, concentrating on the ends to smooth the hair.

Step 2:
* After drying, use a medium sized curling iron throughout the hair to create uneven waves and set the shape around the face.
* Once curled, create side part and pull hair back and away from the face.
* Then, take various sized sections of the curled hair and twist and pin back to create the updo.
* Insert an elegant, decorative pin above the updo to draw attention to the intricate details of the style.

Step 3:
* Finish look with a light-weight hairspray, like Nexxus Comb Thru Natural Hold Design and Finishing Mist, to help secure the style throughout the evening.

Beauty Inspiration:
“When I asked Nicole what we wanted to do for the Oscars, she told me she just wanted to look beautiful,” said makeup artist Angela Levin. “So I decided to go for basic, beautiful makeup that shows who she is – an unbelievable beauty, timeless and glamorous. Her look was pure and gorgeous, just as it should be for the 81st Academy Awards.”

nicole kidman academy awards 2009 Oscars 2009 Beauty: Nicole KidmanBeauty Tips:
Angela prepped Nicole’s skin with he favorite skin care product, Chanel Hydramax + Active Moisture Boost Cream. On her eyes, she used the sultry shades from the Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow in Reflets d’Ombre. Several coats of Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Noir-Black were applied to create a glamorous, modern eye. She applied Chanel Blush Duo Tweed Effect in Tweed Rose on Nicole’s cheekbones. For an added flawless effect, Angela used Chanel Natural Finish Pressed Powder in Translucent 1 all over Nicole’s face. To create a sophisticated, glossy wine coloured lip, she applied CHANEL Aqualumiere Gloss in Bubble Plum.

Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii says that Nicole’s Oscar look “was all about glamorizing the bob.”

“After thoroughly towel drying, I applied David Babaii for WildAid Amplifying Whipped Mousse for volume and hold. I dried the hair by dividing it into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Creating small sections, start at the nape and use the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment. I dried each section with a medium round brush to smooth and create a soft round bend to the ends. Once again, section the hair into 3 sections: top with a side part, sides and back leaving the nape area free.”

“To create waves, I formed “V” shaped pieces and use the David Babaii for WildAid Styling Iron. I then ran the styling iron down the hair shaft from close to the roots to the ends to create a sleek, smooth look. Then I repeated, half way down the hair shaft utilize the beveled edge by turning the styling iron (like a curling iron) to create a soft curl.”

nicole kidman oscars 2009 hair Oscars 2009 Beauty: Nicole Kidman“I clipped each curl and sprayed with David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray. I then alternated the direction of each row of curls in order to achieve a finger wave effect. When finished, gently brush and form into soft waves using my David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray for a soft long lasting hold. To finish, I brushed back one side and secured with a decorative hair pin.”

Styling Tip: Use “V” shaped sections helps to eliminate the appearance of partings.

For the 81st annual Academy Awards, nominee Amy Adams, walked the red carpet with makeup designed by CoverGirl Celebrity Makeup Artist Molly R. Stern. The inspiration was a cross between Talouse Latrec’s dancing girls and the watercolor feeling of a Gustav Klimt painting.

amy adams oscars 2009 dress Oscars 2009 Beauty: Amy Adams“First of all, I have to say I was the most excited I have ever been this morning. I couldn’t sleep a wink. I was dreaming about Amy’s makeup,” Molly said. “The day was amazing. My goal was to make sure that her makeup was saturated but not overdone. I wanted to give her a face without competing with the dress.”

“I started by prepping the face with Jurlique citrus spray to give the face a healthy lift then I gave Amy a light facial massage with La Mer moisturizing lotion. Next I based her face with YSL Perfect Touch #2. Then l blushed her cheeks with Chantecaille Aquablush in Frivolous as a peachy base with Chantecaille Sesame peach eyeshadow over top.”

“Her eyes are based with NARS cream eyeshadow in Maracaibo. Over that I blended Shu Uemura shadow in gray 960 mixed with Shu Uemura shadow in purple 700 all over the lid up into the crease. With a flat shadow brush I added a touch of NARS shadow in Ondine on the inside corner of her lid to give the eye a little gold hint. I lined the top and underneath of her eye with Trish McEvoy’s Arabian Nights Definer. To soften the line underneath, I added a soft smudge of Suqqu lavender shadow in #27. On her lashes, I put one soft coat of CoverGirl Exact Eyelights Mascara in Black Ruby.”

“On her lip, I based her lip with La Mer Lip Balm then applied a thin coat of Outlast Lipstain by CoverGirl in Plum Pout. Then a sheer layer of Shu Uemura wine lip color in 265 with a dot of CoverGirl Wetslicks AmazeMint in Plum Crazy at the center of her lip for a little extra pout. That’s also what she took in her bag for touch ups.”

Oscars 2009 Beauty: Heidi Klum

heidi+klum+oscars+2009 Oscars 2009 Beauty: Heidi Klum
The inspiration behind Heidi Klum’s Oscar beauty look began with her Roland Mouret gown. The graphic silhouette and bold red color of the dress required a softer, natural face to compliment the design rather than compete with it.

heidi klum oscars 2009 dress Oscars 2009 Beauty: Heidi KlumMake-up artist Linda Hay wanted to bring out on Heidi’s dramatic eyes and also incorporate the powder pink color of the coral and diamond Lorraine Schwartz jewelry on the lips and cheeks. Linda sought to create a look that was light and dewy while still modern and sexy.

Eyes:
Linda began by lining the top and bottom lashes with Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Eyeliner in Dark Chocolate and highlighting the inside triangle of the eye with a shimmering nude eye shadow in Champagne. She then used the Victoria Secret Spring Look Eye Shadow Quad to highlight the eyes and make them pop. Using a large shadow brush, Hay applied Rich to the crease, Devoted to the eyelid and Champagne again as a highlighter under the brow and the inside corner of the eye. Using a smaller point shadow brush she blended a soft line under the eye from the outside corner to the tear duct. To finish, Linda applied three coats of Victoria’s Secret High Definition Mascara in Blackest Black.

Cheeks:
On the cheeks, Linda used the new Victoria’s Secret Highlighter/Blush Duo in Fresh to the apple of the cheek to create the allusion of more defined bone structure.

Lips:
Linda lined the lips with the Perfect Lipstick in Whisper followed by Victoria’s Secret Lip Gloss in Blush for subtle pink finish.

New York Fashion Week: Bodkin, Fall 2009

bodkin New York Fashion Week: Bodkin, Fall 2009
On Monday, I traveled to The Horticultural Society in NYC to report from backstage at Bodkin, a still relatively green collection – designed in accordance with principles of sustainability in materials and production methods. For the Fall 2009 line, Bodkin found a natural partner in Aveda, a brand that strives to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility – not just in the world of beauty, but around the world.

New York Fashion Week: Bodkin, Fall 2009I had an opportunity to speak with John Reyman, lead hairstylist for Aveda, about the inspiration and seasonal trends.

“The idea was a little bed-heady…a little like a girl has been outside all day and her hair is a little wind-blown, but at the same time very healthy and very well taken care of. It looks shiny and it looks glossy, but it doesn’t look overworked or overdone. Like she cares but she doesn’t care too much – so kind of that balance. So the idea was we just put a very loose, loose wave in there with some Volumizing Tonic and then we finished it, actually, with the men’s grooming cream to give it a little bit of texture and some shine.”

For Fall 2009, John said, “A lot of people are putting ponytails in the hair. I think we’re really seeing cleaner hair. The last couple of seasons, we’ve seen really textured, really frizzy, really fuzzy hair…almost like the girl didn’t care at all. And I think as the economy sort of changes, people want to look and feel more put-together – and so the hairstyles are really reflecting that…a little cleaner, a little more refined.”

New York Fashion Week: Bodkin, Fall 2009
Andrea Harrison, lead makeup artist for Aveda described the Bodkin Fall 2009 look as really simple and pretty. “She’s so naturally gorgeous. She really has been running around all day…with cold, flushed pretty cheeks. No powder on her skin. Just a very healthy, very natural kinda dewy skin. On the eyes, there’s a light, shimmer. You can really see the skin through it. It’s our Moonstone shimmer, and it’s nice and really smooth. Black mascara just on the top lashes. Just a polished brow which is just really lightly filled in…nothing that you would really look at and say, ‘Oh, that’s hard.’ And Berry Lip Tint on the lips, so it’s very fresh – again, like she’s just been running around. Just an easy look that anybody could duplicate quickly. It would be great for young girls, older, anybody.”

New York Fashion Week: Bodkin, Fall 2009When asked about key trends for Fall 2009, Andrea said, “One thing that you’re seeing everywhere is that the models are all growing out their eyebrows. It seems like another popular trend is, instead of, a smoky eye and a dark lip – you just see one feature that they’ve picked to focus on. Whether it’s eyebrows or just cheeks or just mascara or just lips. So instead of having the full complicated look. So it would be great for everybody. Good for the average woman to pick their favorite feature.”

New York Fashion Week: Bodkin, Fall 2009Before concluding the interview, I asked Andrea to name three Aveda products that every women should have in her beauty arsenal. “One thing is for certain when it comes to makeup…the key to good makeup is beautiful skin. So you always want to make sure that you’re using great skin products. I personally love our Tourmaline Charged Hydrating Creme. I use that on every model before a photo shoot or runway just because you can always add powder if you feel like it’s too much, but it really just makes the makeup go on beautifully. The other thing is mascara…to me, it can make a look that on it’s own. Sometimes you don’t need to anything else. And skin…I really see that being a trend. I love our Tinted Moisturizer; it’s got SPF 15 in it and it’s nice because you can still the skin underneath it. So anybody can wear it easily. Just make sure you match your skin tone. It’s nice and sheer, so everybody can find their skin tone easily.”

Kim Kardashian’s Favorite Hair Styling Cream

kim kardashian grammy1 Kim Kardashians Favorite Hair Styling CreamWhat’s Kim Kardashain’s favorite styling cream? She loves Ojon Animated Styling Cream.

“It increases hair volume, adds separation and texture, boosts moisture and shine, and it’s non-greasy. I use it when my hair is down and I’m wearing a sleeker look. It’s also the perfect cream to use in a pony tail when you want it slicked back but not that oily-greasy look. You guys should try it!”
