Beautiful Things My Mother Taught Me

Mom and me, circa 1979 Disclosure: This post is sponsored by CoverGirl. Mother’s Day is this Sunday and I’m so excited. Not just because Mr. Spoiled Pretty and my son, Westley, are treating me to a decadent brunch. But because it’s an opportunity to celebrate my hero, Andrea Stamps. I must admit that until two years ago, Mother’s Day was just another CONTINUE READING

Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candles: 2 for $22

At Christmastime, I agonized over what to get my son's daycare teachers. There are 12 of them - and even though he has his two main teachers, they all have interaction with him and take excellent care of him. So I needed to buy 12 gifts to show my appreciation, without breaking the bank. $10 each seemed doable, except CONTINUE READING

IMAN Skin Tone Evener BB Creme SPF 15

As a beauty expert, I’m embarrassed by how late I am to the BB Cream party. In the past year, so many friends and colleagues have asked me about BB Creams—what’s the buzz, which brands are the best, etc. —and they would look at me funny when I admitted to not having tried BB Creams yet. I mean, they CONTINUE READING

CoverGirl Outlast Brilliant Shine Nail Gloss in Vio-last

I’m very fickle about my fingernails. Before I paint my nails or get them professionally did, I spend a inordinate amount of time pondering my polish options. I consider the season, recent trends, my wardrobe that week and anywhere special I might go. But despite all of this planning, I’m usually over my polish choice before it even dries. My New Arm Candy: Rebecca Minkoff Swing Bag

After beauty products, handbags are my secondary addiction. But when it comes to arm candy, I have discriminating taste. For me, the perfect handbag seamlessly marries fashion with function, is handcrafted from high-quality materials, has really unique hardware and is classic but edgy - all at the same time. I don't like to carry the of-the-moment "it" bag. I CONTINUE READING

Tom Ford Flap Over Bag Lookalikes Found!

Posted on by daneen in Celebrities, Featured, Handbags | 2 Comments

I jokingly refer to myself as “the bag lady.” Except it’s not really a joke. I carry way too many bags. On an average evening, I return home from work (and daycare) juggling my purse, my laptop bag, Westley’s backpack and lunch bag – plus any shopping bags I’ve accumulated that day. And I need to have at least one hand free to prevent my fearless two-year-old from darting into the street. So I’ve been searching for a crossbody bag to help lighten my load and free up my hands.

The crossbody I want should be work appropriate, but casual enough for weekends. I also need a one that is roomy enough to accommodate my hoarder tendencies, but not so big that I can never find what I’m looking for.

jennifer aniston tom ford flap over handbag Tom Ford Flap Over Bag Lookalikes Found!

After some window shopping and exhaustive Google searches, I finally found my brainchild brought to life…on the arm of Jennifer Aniston. Her ubiquitous Tom Ford Flap-Over Bag was exactly what I had dreamed – well, minus the $4,000 price tag. I was so frustrated because I love everything about this bag (particularly the fold-over, zippered flap) and knew I’d be hard-pressed to find a lookalike in my price range.

So I continued my search and found these similar styles:

Anya Hindmarch Maxi Zip Cross Body Bag Tom Ford Flap Over Bag Lookalikes Found!Anya Hindmarch Maxi Zip Cross Body Bag, $895
Pros: Absolutely gorgeous
Cons: Hello, this bag is $900! And at 11. x 6″, it’s on the small side

Marc by Marc Jacobs Petal To The Metal Natasha Bag Tom Ford Flap Over Bag Lookalikes Found!Marc by Marc Jacobs Petal To The Metal Natasha Bag, $458
Pros: Roomy and bird embellishments are cute
Cons: Bird embellishments also make this bag a little less work-appropriate and $500 is still more than I want to spend

Tom Ford Flap Over Bag Lookalikes Found!Kate Spade New York Cobble Hill Little Minka Satchel, $378
Pros: High quality, versatile design and available in a variety of colors
Cons: I’m cheap and it’s too close to Christmas for me to splurge on this bag, though I might snatch it up if I spied it at an outlet store

Marc by Marc Jacobs classic q natasha Tom Ford Flap Over Bag Lookalikes Found!Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q – Natasha Crossbody Flap Bag, $368
Pros: Similar to TF bag and closer to my price range
Cons: Still more than I’d like to spend and very trendy (I see this bag on women at least once or twice a day)

Emma Fox Classics Large Foldover Tote Tom Ford Flap Over Bag Lookalikes Found!Emma Fox Classics Large Foldover Tote, $207
Pros: Looks expensive, but totally within my price range
Cons: Not wild about the “convertible” aspect of this tote/crossbody

lodis dahlia joelle hobo Tom Ford Flap Over Bag Lookalikes Found! So – long story short (too late), I almost settled and bought the Kate Spade bag. But the shopping gods intervened and led me to the Lodis Dahlia Joelle Hobo. It’s the spitting image of the Tom Ford bag (down to the zippered flap and expandable gusset) for just $268!!!!!! I can’t believe my luck.

I’ll be sure to post pics when it arrives.

nicole by opi kourt is red y for a pedi Nicole by OPI: Kourt Is Red y For A PediI am absolutely obsessed with Nicole by OPI’s Kourt is Red-y For A Pedi - from the Kardashian Kolors collection. So I reached into the recesses of my nail polish collection and unearthed this gem, which OPI sent me for review last year (better late than never, right?). CONTINUE READING

bethenny frankel Skinnygirl Face and Body Gift Set Giveaway!Bethenny Frankel is my CBFFIMH (Celebrity Best Friend Forever in My Head) – along with Kathy Griffin and Wendy Williams.

Bethenny and I were introduced back in March of 2008 when The Real Housewives of New York premiered. She quickly won me over with her unpretentious personality and quick wit, and we’ve been BFF’s (again, in my head) ever since. Bethenny and I even had our children around the same time (Bethenny gave birth to Bryn in May of 2010 and Westley arrived in August of that year). I remember even more of a kinship with Bethenny as I watched her juggle marriage and motherhood, on the first season of Bethenny Getting Married?

Now I learn that me and my gal pal have even more in common. The reality-star-turned-entrepreneur has ventured into beauty, launching her Skinnygirl Face and Body collection. CONTINUE READING

2012 Oscar Hair Predictions From The Pros

Posted on by daneen in Beauty Tips, Celebrities, Featured, Hair, Hair Styling | Leave a comment

Hollywood’s “Night of Nights” is right around the corner, and while we don’t know who will take home the oh-so-coveted Oscar Awards, we do know that all you beauty junkies out there will be mentally casting your vote for Oscar superlatives – who has the best dress, the best accessories and of course… who has the best hair?

Michelle+Williams 2012 Oscar Hair Predictions From The Pros
Michelle Williams wears color that compliments her skin tone.

We spoke with the pros at Wella Professionals, the hair brand who has a very impressive roster of red carpet hair under their belt already from this season, including Madonna, Michelle Williams, Claire Danes, Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Emily Blunt and Shailene Woodley, to get the inside scoop on what hair looks will heat up the red carpet this Sunday.

Graceful Sheen

“We will see a peak in fluid textures and warm tones that suggest effortless elegance and healthy, shiny hair that shows a lot of movement and bounce,” states Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman. “Expensive and Luxurious are words you could use to explain this look – maximize this effect by asking your colorist to use Wella Professionals Haircolor to give you a soft shade with warm undertones that will best complement your skin tone.”

Aura recommends her A-list clientele use Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner, which is designed to seal in color while leaving locks irresistibly smooth to the touch.

“Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier is a red-carpet favorite,” adds Celebrity Stylist Andy LeCompte, “that smoothes the hair surface so it can better prepare the hair for styling.” Andy also uses Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray on his clientele to create the most sheen and expensive looking finish to any end look. Mario Dedivanovic NYC Makeup Workshop Recap

Posted on by daneen in Beauty Tips, Celebrities, Event, Featured, Mario Dedivanovic | Leave a comment

Mario Dedivanovic NYC Makeup Workshop RecapEarlier this month, I was lucky enough to attend Mario Dedivanovic’s first NYC makeup workshop.

Mario is one of the most sought-after makeup artists in the world and is the wizard behind Kim Kardashian’s flawless face. His celebrity clientele also includes Natasha Bedingfield, Eliza Dushku, Michelle Williams, Amanda Bynes, Gina Gershon and many others.

Over the course of the five hour seminar, Mario worked his makeup magic, demonstrating how to create a red carpet look – with singer/actress Adrienne Bailon acting as his model. Mario also answered the attendees burning beauty questions, like he does here in his Makeup Mondays with Mario column, and shared his expert techniques. And being the sweetheart that he is, he posed for photos with all of the workshop participants.

Strike a pose….there’s nothing to it…VOGUE!

For those of you who didn’t attend, you really missed out. Luckily, I took nine pages of copious notes and here are some gems:

* Mario cleans his makeup brushes with Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo.

* His favorite foundations include Nars Sheer Glow Foundation, Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, Make Up Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and Kevyn Aucoin Liquid Airbrush Foundation.

* When setting foundation with powder, use a velour puff.

* When filling in the eyebrows, you should always go darker on the outside of the brow. This visually lifts and makes eyes look wider set.

* Mario loves Sigma Beauty’s Blending Brush #25 to define the eye crease.

* “Making a client feel comfortable is as important than the quality of the work,” Mario said. “If a client doesn’t feel comfortable, they won’t book you again.”

* Kim Kardashian’s makeup can take up to 2 hours, whereas her sister Kourtney likes her makeup to be done in 20 minutes or less.

* Mario’s favorite highlighter is one that he custom blended himself. “EYE M GLAM is a sheer highlighting powder that will give you the most gorgeous, golden glow. Using GIELLA mineral pigments, I custom blended EYE M GLAM while sitting on the floor in my apartment one evening, determined to come up with the best highlighter.” Use it under the brows, on cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose and anywhere else you want to define bone structure. Soon, Giella will be releasing Lip Glam – a peachy golden gloss that Mario mixed to be like EYE M GLAM for lips.

* Mario’s favorite liquid eyeliner is MAC Liquid Eye Liner “because it doesn’t dry glossy – it dries matte.”

* When applying powder cosmetics with brushes, don’t pull and drag – it will just smear and ruin your base. Instead, press the bristles into the skin. And don’t load up the brush with product. Less is always best because you can add more, if necessary. If you accidentally apply too much, you may have to wipe it off and start over again.

* L’Oreal Voluminous and Lancome Hypnose Drama are Mario’s go-to mascaras.

* For false fringe, Mario and Adrienne both love Ardell’s #116 lashes. Mario told the workshop attendees that the trick to full and lush-looking false lashes is to layer them. On Adrienne, Mario applied a full strip of the #116 lashes; once dry, he layered a half strip of the #116 on the outer corner of each eye. Once the second layer is dry, draw a line of eyeliner at the base of the lashes – to mask the line. Then curl lashes and apply a coat of mascara to “marry” your real lashes with the false ones and make them appear more natural.

* When applying concealer under the eyes, Mario takes it to a whole nuther level. Using a brush, he applies a cream concealer (that is 2 shades lighter than your skin tone) under each eye – in the shape of an inverted triangle. The bottom tip of the triangle should be mid-cheek, at the level of your nostril. Then layer a liquid concealer on top of the cream concealer (Mario likes Make Up For Ever Lift Concelaer). Then blend…blend…blend, girl – using the ultimate beauty tool, the beautyblender sponge.

* When you’re finished your makeup, apply MAC Fix+ to set everything. Mario said, “The silicone in it makes all of the makeup look more natural.”

In addition to attending the workshop and learning from the master, I was also a sponsor of the event. I raffled off a basket of Spoiled Pretty faves (you know I love me a giveaway), which included:
