Star Style Secrets

Celebrities are expected to always look put-together and polished. They have the privilege of working with the most talented and sought-after pros in the beauty biz. The January 2008 issue of In Style has an article entitled “365 Star Style Secrets” to help women boost our style quotient with some celebrity know-how. The piece features insider tips and tricks – so you won’t end up on the ‘What Were They Thinking’ list.

Get A Pillowy Pout Sans Surgery or Stinging

FirstFrostSingle Get A Pillowy Pout Sans Surgery or StingingI’m a brown girl. So when I tried PlumpLips IceSticks from Freeze 24/7 in FirstFrost (iridescent bubble gum pink), I expected disaster. I don’t usually gravitate towards pale lip colors because they wash me out. And I’ve been burned, quite literally, by irritating lip plumpers in the past.

So when I looked in the mirror, after applying FirstFrost to my lips, I was shocked…in the best way possible. The product soothed, subtly plumped, and gave my pout a sheer wash of color – without any stinging or pain, just a cool tingle. The formula is soft and moisturizing, so tackiness isn’t an issue. The most exciting feature of the PlumpLips IceSticks is its ability to enhance the natural color of your lips – by increasing circulation to the lip surface.

HalleBerry Get A Pillowy Pout Sans Surgery or StingingJennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Katie Holmes, and Renee Zellweger are reported fans.

I’m glad that I kept an open mind, because I love this lip product. I would absolutely purchase again…and I am anxious to try the other seven shades (Brr..Berry, WindChill, ArcticGlaze, FrostBitten, PlumCicle, CherryIce, and Clear).

Guess Who: 12.27.07

I was shocked when I came across this picture of a certain celeb. I’d never seen her without her signature red lips – let alone, barefaced. Can you guess her identity?

Deviated Septum Deception

 Deviated Septum Deception
It so irks me when celebs try to ‘outwit’ us regular folks. Every time I turn around, some superstar (or superstar wannabe) is playing the ‘deviated septum card’ to trade in their honker for a more sculpted schnoz.

What ticks me off even more is when they have the nerve to tell other women to be comfortable in their own skin and love themselves – then they sneak off to have elective surgery. I mean, if you’re not comfortable addressing it in the media – don’t discuss it. Or be completely honest about it and say, ‘I hated my old nose, so I got a new one” or “I’ll get a lot more work with this less ethnic nose.” But don’t insult my intelligence.

Kate Somerville Is My Mom’s Savior

Kate Somerville Is My Moms SaviorSince learning about Kate Somerville earlier this year, I have been eager to try her skin care products. For the past 15 years, Somerville has devoted her life to addressing skin wellness, and is responsible for the sublime skin of Hollywood’s most lovely leading ladies – including, Jessica Alba, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Sandra Oh, and Kate Walsh.

So when my friend, Tracy, sent me some products to try – I was beyond excited. You should have seen me tearing into the box…I probably looked like one of the “infected” from that movie, 28 Days Later.

Anyway, inside the package were Kate Somerville’s Gentle Daily Wash, Quench Hydrating Serum, and Line Release Under Eye Repair. As I don’t really have under-eye issues, I re-gifted the latter product to my grateful mother – who suffers from dark circles; and after using it for a while, this is what she told me:

somerville Kate Somerville Is My Moms SaviorThe Kate Somerville Line Release Under Eye Repair is awesome! I have been using it for approximately 10 days and the results are amazing. With this product, I saw a difference very quickly – but then I thought that, perhaps, it was all in my mind. That is, until your sister came home for Christmas break and she asked me what makeup I had on under my eyes. I proudly said, ‘I am not wearing anything.’ Her reply was WOW, and said she was so used to seeing my dark circles poorly masked by pancake concealer, that she just had to ask.

Daneen, please tell your readers that for my under-eye problem, this is my savior. I researched the price, and when I learned it costs $125.00, I did not raise an eyebrow. For me this product is worth its weight in gold. Thanks, Kate Somerville…thanks, Daneen!

Thank you, Mom, for the great review! More Kate Somerville product reviews to come, so stay tuned.

Rocket Science

“The folly of one man is the fortune of another; for no man prospers so suddenly as by others’ errors.” – Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

More than forty years ago, aerospace physicist Dr. Max Huber suffered a horrific accident. A routine experiment exploded in his face, covering him with severe chemical burns. Neither science nor medicine offered a treatment to minimize his scarring, so Huber decided to help himself. Twelve years and 6,000 experiments later, he perfected a product that has been dubbed “the miracle cream.” In the case of Crème de la Mer, the folly of one man is the fortune of thousands of women…and now I am one of them.

lamer Rocket ScienceTypically, it takes a few weeks to see results from a new face treatment; but with Crème de la Mer, it only took me two days to notice a drastic improvement in the quality of my skin.

Concentrated ingredients – including sea kelp, essential vitamins and minerals, plus oils of citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower – are combined into a ‘Miracle Broth’, distilled, and fermented for three to four months. Then this nutrient-rich mixture is then hand-poured into jars, as not to disturb it delicate balance.

I can honestly say that when it comes to Crème de la Mer, the myth is indeed reality. There is a reason why it has achieved cult status. I now understand why Jennifer Lopez uses it all over her body – and we thought that J.Lo glow was the result of makeup. Only now can I appreciate why Victoria Beckham says it’s the one beauty product she can’t live without.

What I love so much about the cream is that it provides instant gratification. To activate the broth and release its key ingredients, warm a small amount between your fingertips. As you pat onto clean, dry skin, you will instantly feel the soothing effects of the cream.

Crème de la Mer may appear thick in the jar, but it simply sinks into skin – leaving it soft and luxuriously hydrated, with a youthfully dewy finish. Using other facial moisturizers, I would need to reapply throughout the day to treat dry patches – or apply powder to offset excess shine. With Crème de la Mer, I don’t have those problems – in fact, I haven’t been wearing makeup the past few days because my skin looks so radiant without it. It’s like I’m walking around with special lighting. Apply it in the AM and PM – that’s all it takes. And, as a bonus, the soft fragrance helps to calm me as I fall asleep at night.

At $125 for an ounce (or $1,350 for 16.5 oz), the price tag is a little frightening. But I think I’m just going to have to bite the bullet – because the thought of going back to some ‘regular’ moisturizer is a much scarier thought.

Rocket SciencePut this on your holiday wish list: La Mer’s Holiday 2007 Gifts of Beauty, exclusive to Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.

The Essential Collection gift set combines three of La Mer’s most coveted products, and is ideal for both newcomers and longtime La Mer devotees. The Connoisseur Collection include the Crème de La Mer and Eye Concentrate in two lacquered boxes. Looking for a stocking stuffer to spoil someone (or yourself) pretty?
