I hardly have time to do anything, let alone a DIY - so I needed to find some lacquers that fit my new lifestyle. Yesterday, while going my grocery shopping, I picked up Revlon CONTINUE READING

Tatcha, I'm So Glad I Gotcha

I'm home on maternity leave, so I spend an inordinate amount of time nursing my daughter, burping her and changing her diapers - all the while, watching hours of QVC. I don't know what it is, but I am mesmerized by QVC demonstrations. If I'm channel surfing and I happen to land on QVC, it's damn near impossible for CONTINUE READING

Bath & Body Works Cooling Gel Lotion Needs A New Name

A few weeks ago, I paid a visit to my local Bath & Body Works store. I was on the hunt for a tropical-smelling body wash that wouldn't break the bank, and B&BW seemed like a good place to search. When I entered the store, I was greeted my a really nice saleswoman who asked me what I was CONTINUE READING

Laura Mercier Master Class: Makeup Bag Must-Haves in Your 30s

Every month, my girlfriends from college and I get together for dinner in the Philadelphia area. We started this tradition about two years ago, and - of course - we have a great time catching up and reminiscing!  Most of them are product-obsessed (like me), and most have been through some sort of make-up introductory when we became "of age" to wear it.  Now CONTINUE READING

Thread Beauty Bar Giveaway!

thread+beauty+bar Thread Beauty Bar Giveaway!
A few months ago, my mom told me that she and my sister had gone to get their eyebrows threaded at this kiosk in the King of Prussia Mall. I had been dying to jump on the threading bandwagon, but didn’t really imagine my first foray into this ancient art of hair removal going down in the middle of a congested shopping center. I mean, no one needs to know about my moustache maintenance. I exaggerate, but you get my point. So at the end of my mother’s threading kiosk narrative, she tells me that, while standing in line, she met a woman with the most amazing eyebrows. “Did she get them done at the kiosk?” I breathlessly asked. My mom said no, that she had just opened her own day spa downtown. As is usually the case with Mama Spoiled Pretty, she couldn’t recall the pertinent details, like the name of the spa or the location. But she remembered the woman’s name…Dara. So I started sleuthing and soon solved the mystery.

For forever, if you were a phillie from Philly who wanted her arches threaded, it used to entail a trip to New York. And for years, Dara King made the 100 mile trip to maintain her enviable eyebrows. Weary of making the trek, this former Temple University business student hatched a plan for Philadelphia to catch up to her trend-setting big sis, NYC. Not only would she open a threading salon, she would become proficient in this art – and teach every one of the technicians who worked there. She would add manis/pedis, facials, and makeup application to the menu of services – using a range of botanically-based products. And as the icing on the proverbial cake, forget about scheduling a treatment in advance…because appointments aren’t necessary.

So thanks to Dara and her entrepreneurial vision, we Philly girls can save ourselves a trip on NJ Transit, Amtrak, or the Chinatown bus – because Thread Beauty Bar is right in our backyard!

Thread Beauty Bar, located at 1903 Chestnut Street, opened to rave reviews this spring…so on my lunch break one day, I walked on over to see what all the hype was about. The spa isn’t the easiest to find; the entrance to the 2nd floor walk-up is a little obscure. But once you ascend the stairs to this modern and spacious beauty oasis – you’ll fall in love with this hidden gem.

Even without an appointment, I waited less than ten minutes. My eyebrow shaping and upper lip threading took less than five. And, here’s the kicker – it only cost $20!

If you’ve never been threaded or haven’t seen how it’s done – here’s a crash course:

threading Thread Beauty Bar Giveaway! The process involves a piece of thread, and the ends are knotted together to make a circle. The thread is then twisted to form the shape of a bow tie and glided along the skin. As the unwanted hair comes in to the twist of the thread, it is lifted straight from the roots. Threading is an all natural method of hair removal and far superior to waxing because it doesn’t necessitate the use of nasty chemicals, which can burn and irritate skin. It’s also more precise than waxing, and you’d be amazed at how a simple piece of thread can result in such expertly shaped brows.

The sensation is beyond words…I can’t even begin to articulate. Oddly fascinating is the only way I can describe it. I’ve been waxed a ka-trillion times, so that process (and the pain that accompanies it) is old hat for me. And in the discomfort category, threading beats waxing every time. It’s a TKO. I wouldn’t even describe the feeling as pain…and it’s over so quickly that even big babies will be able to bite the bullet.

Thread Beauty Bar is open late (check the website for days and hours of operation) – so even after the hour strikes 7pm and Rittenhouse boutiques kick your shopaholic ass out, you can walk down the street and get prettified. And for parties of six or more, Thread offers birthday, bachelorette, bridal, girls night out, and corporate parties.

Because I can’t keep a good thing to myself, Spoiled Pretty is partnering with Thread Beauty Bar for a giveaway! If you live in the Greater Philadelphia area, enter to win a $50 gift card to Thread Beauty Bar.

To enter, send an email to spoiledprettycontests@gmail.com. Be sure to include your full name. The subject line should read “Thread Giveaway.” The contest ends at midnight (EST) on Friday, September 12th. One winner will be chosen at random from among the entrants. On Saturday, September 13th, I’ll announce the winner’s name. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning.

Good luck!

Belle Of The Brows: Anastasia Brow Enhancing Serum

anastasia+brow+enhancing+serum Belle Of The Brows: Anastasia Brow Enhancing Serum
Between shaving, waxing, threading, and laser removal, women spend an inordinate amount of money getting rid of unwanted hair. But it only costs $35 to restore thin, over-plucked, and undernourished eyebrows – thanks to Anastasia.

Brow Enhancing Serum is a colorless and odorless gel, comprised of a unique blend of proteins. The deep conditioning action works to help stimulate the hair follicle in as quickly as 4-6 weeks. An easy-to-use applicator allows the non-greasy formula to glide on smooth without tugging or pulling and is gentle enough to be used every day. Brow Enhancing Serum is not harmful to the eyes or the surrounding skin area, plus as an added bonus, it also slows down excess hair loss, which results in a healthier fuller-looking brow.

For quite a while, I’ve been trying (in vain) to embrace the thicker brow trend. But genetics have not been in my favor. After using Brow Enhancing Serum, I noticed an improvement very quickly…quicker than the 4 weeks Anastasia promises.

camilla+belle Belle Of The Brows: Anastasia Brow Enhancing SerumI haven’t experienced any negative side effects, so I fully intend to continue using this product until I achieve brows a la Camilla Belle (left).

Anastasia Brow Enhancing Serum is available at Sephora and anastasia.net.

kim+kardashian+all+about+eyes More Makeup Tips From Kim Kardashian
Women can’t get enough of Kim Kardashian. Considering the public’s fascination with her makeup choices and tips, I’m surprised she’s not working to develop her own line of cosmetics. Anyways, Kim answered some beauty-related fan mail on her website today. This time, it’s all about eyes.

So, as usual, I am re-publishing on Spoiled Pretty – complete with links and spelling corrections. Enjoy, pretties!

Ruby asks:
Kim, do you wear eyelash extensions? I am so amazed by how long and perfect your eyelashes always appear… not to mention that both of your sisters and your mom have the same perfect look.

Kim answers:
No, I do not wear eyelash extensions, Ruby. But I just started using an eyelash grower called Revitalash. It’s amazing! It makes your eyelashes grow soooo much!

Kim [another Kim, not Kim K] asks:
Kim….You, your mom and your sisters eyelashes are ALWAYS beautiful. I wanted to know what brand of falsies you use or where do you guys get them done?

Kim answers:
We wear lashes from a company called Red Cherry, but Khloe never wears them. Kourtney, my mom and I only wear them out at night to events or parties. We have very long eye lashes to start with and the trick is to use two different kinds of mascara and really take your time putting it on!

Mla asks:
Hi Kim! Thanx for giving us your makeup regimen! We really appreciated this, but I wanted to know the color you use on your eyebrows. They always look so perfect! Do you use pencil or what!? Thanx again, and stay nice and cool!

Kim answers:
I use a MAC brown eyeshadow to fill them in a little bit. It’s called Walnut. It works really well for me. If I need to fill in some more, I use the MAC eyebrow pencil called Lingering.

Urban Decay Brow Box Eyebrow Kit

urbandecay browbox Urban Decay Brow Box Eyebrow Kit
My eyebrows have been looking seriously jacked lately. That’s what happens when you don’t touch them in over three months.

Yes, I’m aware that eyebrows frame the face. And I know that they’rethe cornerstone of a polished look. I know, I know. But the truth is that – as much as I talk a good game on this blog – eyebrows make me nervous.

I’m afraid of plucking. I don’t dare think of waxing myself. And everytime I fill them in, I end up looking a bit like Joan Crawford on a good day – and Groucho Marx (minus the moustache) on a bad one. So usually, I just leave it to the professionals. That is, until Urban Decay invented the Brow Box Eyebrow Kit.

This is the definitive brow kit. I’m not exaggerating. Amazingly, Urban Decay somehow managed to fit two shades of brow color, mini tweezers, a mini angled brush, and brow wax into a pretty, palm-sized kit. And it’s one of those rare products that’s so super easy to use, it goes on flawlessly – and you look like a pro. Love it!

You need to go get this kit, ladies…You know you want this kit…Oh, just go get the kit already.

Available at urbandecay.com and Sephora.
