Beautiful Things My Mother Taught Me

Mom and me, circa 1979 Disclosure: This post is sponsored by CoverGirl. Mother’s Day is this Sunday and I’m so excited. Not just because Mr. Spoiled Pretty and my son, Westley, are treating me to a decadent brunch. But because it’s an opportunity to celebrate my hero, Andrea Stamps. I must admit that until two years ago, Mother’s Day was just another CONTINUE READING

Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candles: 2 for $22

At Christmastime, I agonized over what to get my son's daycare teachers. There are 12 of them - and even though he has his two main teachers, they all have interaction with him and take excellent care of him. So I needed to buy 12 gifts to show my appreciation, without breaking the bank. $10 each seemed doable, except CONTINUE READING

IMAN Skin Tone Evener BB Creme SPF 15

As a beauty expert, I’m embarrassed by how late I am to the BB Cream party. In the past year, so many friends and colleagues have asked me about BB Creams—what’s the buzz, which brands are the best, etc. —and they would look at me funny when I admitted to not having tried BB Creams yet. I mean, they CONTINUE READING

CoverGirl Outlast Brilliant Shine Nail Gloss in Vio-last

I’m very fickle about my fingernails. Before I paint my nails or get them professionally did, I spend a inordinate amount of time pondering my polish options. I consider the season, recent trends, my wardrobe that week and anywhere special I might go. But despite all of this planning, I’m usually over my polish choice before it even dries. My New Arm Candy: Rebecca Minkoff Swing Bag

After beauty products, handbags are my secondary addiction. But when it comes to arm candy, I have discriminating taste. For me, the perfect handbag seamlessly marries fashion with function, is handcrafted from high-quality materials, has really unique hardware and is classic but edgy - all at the same time. I don't like to carry the of-the-moment "it" bag. I CONTINUE READING

urban+decay+spring+2010 Urban Decay Spring 2010

Urban Decay is one of my top 5 makeup brands, so I was super stoked to get deets and pics of their Spring 2010 collection in my inbox earlier this week. Here’s the skinny:

Urban+Decay+24+7+Glide+On+Eye+Pencil Urban Decay Spring 2010

24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils in (top to bottom) Binge, Crash, Mildew and Oil Slick were previously only available in Urban Decay’s holiday gift sets, but now Urban Decay is introducing these new fame-bound shades to their beloved 24/7 pencil family. Crash is a rich deep eggplant, Oil Slick is black with silver sparkle, Mildew is a dark green based on our best-selling shadow, and Binge is a long-awaited navy. You’re probably heard me say it before, but I’ll say it again – 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils are the BEST eyeliners on the market. These pencils, with their creamy-on-the-eyes and waterproof formula (so you can apply to the inner rims) are must-have additions to your beauty arsenal. Available at Sephora and urbandecay.com.

Urban+Decay+Razor+Sharp+Ultra+Definition+Finishing+Powder Urban Decay Spring 2010

Designed for stars of film and flat screens, Razor Sharp Ultra Definition Finishing Powder, this high-tech translucent powder, keeps you camera ready at all times. The micro-fine powder fools the eyes with “optical blurring.” Imperfections are seemingly airbrushed away for a soft-focus finish. Skin appears flawless, even under bright, unforgiving light. Tiny water particles float along the skin’s surface and actually “burst”, creating a microscopic ball bearing effect when the powder is applied. The feel is refreshing, smooth, and light as air.

Apply as a finishing touch after your foundation. Or, wear it along for bare, youthful look. Used under make-up, it transforms foundation into a liquid powder! The sleek gunmetal lid and clear base showcase a unique mess-free system and attached puff. Other brands require swirling, brushes and hassle, whereas this is all-in-one, and even has an “on/off” feature to keep your purse powder-free! Available at Sephora and urbandecay.com.

Urban+Decay+Stardust+Eyeshadow+in+Diamond+Dog Urban Decay Spring 2010

Stardust Eyeshadow is an eyeshadow that has a prismatic sparkle set against a wash of captivating colors with 40% more glitter than the most sparkly shadows from Urban Decay. The futuristic, squeeze-open case holds over two times the amount of product than other Urban Decay eyeshadows.

Urban+Decay+Stardust+Eyeshadow Urban Decay Spring 2010

Top row: 54 (light purple w/iridescent sparkle), Atmosphere (deep turquoise w/iridescent sparkle), Bobby Dazzle (white w/iridescent sparkle). Middle row: Diamond Dog (brown w/iridescent sparkle), Griffith (green w/iridescent sparkle), Moon Spoon (gray w/iridescent sparkle ). Bottom row: Retrograde (dark purple w/iridescent sparkle), Space Cowboy (beige w/iridescent sparkle), Void (black w/iridescent sparkle).

Urban+Decay+Primer+Potion+in+Eden Urban Decay Spring 2010

Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Eden is an eye prep product that provides smoother, longer-lasting, and absolutely crease-proof eyeshadow. If your shadow likes to move it, move it – you need Urban Decay’s Primer Potion…which is now also offered in a very-wearable, tawny, matte hue. Available exclusively at Sephora.

eyelash+curler Makeup Mondays With Mario: Curling Stick Straight LashesHi Mario,

I have this problem where I have to curl my lashes several times throughout the day. When I first put on my makeup in the morning, I curl my lashes and then apply the mascara, but it seems that right when I walk out the door they are sticking straight again. I have no idea what to do. Can you please suggest some things that might help?

Thanks, Jen

Hey Jen,

Rest assured that you’re not the only girl with stick straight lashes! Before you start your face, curl the lashes once, counting to 3 or 4 seconds per pinch on each lash. This way, they will be evenly curled. Go ahead and do your makeup as normal. After the eyes are done, curl lashes one more time. Apply a curling mascara. There are tons of different curling mascaras on the market. N.Y.C. New York Color makes a great and affordable one. Brush out the mascara with a clean wand so it’s not too clumpy. Once it’s dried or almost dried, curl one more time, not pressing too hard. Finally, apply another coat of mascara. Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays!

xo,
Mario

MAC All Ages, All Races, All Sexes Swatches

mac+all+ages+races+sexes MAC All Ages, All Races, All Sexes SwatchesWhen I first heard about MAC’s upcoming All Ages, All Races, All Sexes collection, I got really excited. I immediately loved the idea of a “multi-culti color story” – and knew that a vast majority of these gorgeous, nude/neutral products would find its way into my own beauty arsenal.

The release date for All Ages, All Races, All Sexes is January 7, 2010…though, like most MAC collections, it will probably be available a few days in advance. I got my hands on some early samples (MAC sent them for me to review), and the shades are so beautiful in person. The images and press release I had previously seen didn’t do them justice.

When the collections comes out, I’ll be picking up one or two of the lipglasses. I’m a sucker for MAC lipglass and these frosty neutrals look Rihanna approved.

So, without further ado, here are some swatches and close-up product pics from All Ages, All Races, All Sexes.

dior+jazz+club+limited+edition+eye+palette Dior Jazz Club Eye Palette Hits All The Right Notes

If you have eyes, I insist that you purchase Dior Jazz Club Eye Palette as soon as said eyes finish reading this review.

The limited edition, all-in-one palette features: cream to powder black liner, brow shaping powder, four eyeshadows and a top coat. The major selling point of this palette (which just so happens to have the chicest packaging eva) is the topcoat. In the tray, it deceivingly looks like shimmering snow, but it applies super sheer.

When you layer it on top of shadow, it goes all Emeril on you. BAM…in an instant, it kicks the color up a notch by imparting a sparkly, iridescence. Use the topcoat with any of the palette’s shadows – or in tandem with the any of the shadows in your makeup arsenal. I swear – it gives old products new life.

Dior Jazz Club Eye Palette and your lids should make beautiful music together. Don’t fight fate. Pick it up now at Nordstom.
