Bath & Body Works Cooling Gel Lotion Needs A New Name

A few weeks ago, I paid a visit to my local Bath & Body Works store. I was on the hunt for a tropical-smelling body wash that wouldn't break the bank, and B&BW seemed like a good place to search. When I entered the store, I was greeted my a really nice saleswoman who asked me what I was CONTINUE READING

Laura Mercier Master Class: Makeup Bag Must-Haves in Your 30s

Every month, my girlfriends from college and I get together for dinner in the Philadelphia area. We started this tradition about two years ago, and - of course - we have a great time catching up and reminiscing!  Most of them are product-obsessed (like me), and most have been through some sort of make-up introductory when we became "of age" to wear it.  Now CONTINUE READING

Dermadoctor Physical Chemistry

One of my all-time favorite products is Dermadoctor KP Duty, a dual action body exfoliator that combines the benefits of a chemical peel and microdermabrasion. It was developed to treat chicken skin - those little red bumps that many people get on their upper arms. But, for years, I've been using it to exfoliate my legs pre-shave.  There's really no body exfoliator CONTINUE READING

CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain
Remember how I told you that CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain wouldn’t be available until January 2009? Well, I lied. Not on purpose though…I’d never intentionally deceive you. You see, CoverGirl Outlast Lipstains will make their way to mass-market retail outlets nationwide starting next month, but Drugstore.com is giving you an early Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa present…cuz you can get your lips on them today!!!

I’ve had these babies in my possession for the past few weeks, and I’m enamored. Since I was afforded a sneak peek of the product, I have had them on my person at all times. I’ve worn at least one of the shades everyday since they arrived on my doorstep. I am an equal opportunity beauty addict and I give most anything a chance – so when I enter into a monogamous relationship with a product, it means a lot. CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

The water-based colorants infuse into the top layer of lips, rather than coat the outside…so there’s no waxy, sticky residue. The formula contains conditioners (like glycerine and hyaluronic acid) to soften and smooth lips, and Outlast is one of the few stains that doesn’t contain alcohol, which can be drying. The felt tip allows for precise application, and the stain can be layered to achieve a sheer or more opaque look. Finally, it lasts for 6+ hours…so you’re looking pretty all day long without touchups (but it comes off easily with facial cleanser or makeup remover).

P&G Global Creative Design Director, Pat McGrath, created a palette of ten brilliant shades that deliver a flush of color to the lips: Berry Smooch, Bit of Blossom, Cinnamon Smile, Coy Coral, Everbloom Kiss, Flirty Nude, Plum Pout, Sassy Mauve, Teasing Blush, and Wild Berry Wink. “Over the last few seasons, lipstain has emerged as a key beauty trend on fashion runways,” says McGrath. “The CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain collection is one step ahead of the curve with its novel pen applicator and prestige color palette. It’s a great way to update your look and stay on top of the latest runway trends.”

My personal fave is Sassy Mauve. I wear it almost everyday for that snow bunny, me-but-cuter look. Top it with a clear gloss for a little kick, and you’re good to go. I like it so much, I probably should put a ring on it. First runner-up is Wild Berry Wink. On Saturday, I applied two coats followed by a few swipes of clear gloss – and I swore I was Rihanna in her latest video. I might need rehab, considering how addicted I’ve become to this sexy shade.

Buy these now, ladies. I swear you won’t be disappointed. They’re holy grail material. And at $7.50 a pop, they’re this recessionista’s fabuless pick of the week!

Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week: OPI You Don’t Know Jacques!

Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: OPI You Dont Know Jacques!
I haven’t been in a nail salon since June of 2007, so when Deidre, a fellow Philadelphia blogger, and I made plans to finally get together for some beauty-related fun, I had a brilliant idea. We would go get our nails did. So last night after work, I met Deidre on the corner of 17th and Locust and took her to City Nails, a nail salon I’ve passed by for the past three years but have never stepped inside.

Once we took off our coats, the nail technicians directed us to to pick our colors. So we walked over to the wall o’ polishes, a veritable playground of polishes.

opi you+don%27t+know+jacques Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: OPI You Dont Know Jacques!Determined to take my own advice and rock the “greige” nail look that Glamour says is all the rage, I spun the displays looking for OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques!. I got a little anxious when I couldn’t locate a bottle of the dirty taupe lacquer. Then Deidre tapped me on the shoulder and excited exclaimed that she’d found her fave. I turned around to see her holding the polish I had been searching for. Right then and there, I knew Deidre and I were gonna get along fine. Almost immediately, I found a second bottle of You Don’t Know Jacques! – so we took our seats to begin our tandem, identical manicures.

Fast forward 15 minutes later…we couldn’t stop stealing glances at each other’s hands, marveling at how the sooty chocolate shade flattered both of our skin tones. And a half hour later, while talking beauty shop at a nearby Starbucks, we carefully clutched our coffee cups – as not to destroy the perfect handiwork of City Nails. Check out Deidre’s nails to appreciate how You Don’t Know Jacques! compliments different complexions.

If you are a regular reader of Spoiled Pretty, you know that while I love me some beauty products, I don’t use superlatives very often. So when I say that You Don’t Know Jacques! is the the most magnificent nail color I have ever worn, you know I’m not just high on nail polish fumes. It is so gorgeous that it has taken me twice as long to finish this review, because I keep getting distracted…hypnotized by my delishiously dark mani.

You Don’t Know Jacques!, the star of OPI’s La Collection de France, is soon to join my own private stock because I cannot LIVE without this shade in my lifestyle.

You. Must. Go. Buy. This. Polish. There’s really nothing more to say. If this review doesn’t convince you to drop everything and go invest $8 in the most stunning nail shade eva – well, you don’t know jack.

Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week: L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara

rub+eyes Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara
Lately, I’d sworn off wearing mascara during the work week. You see, around 3:00pm, when my Cosi sandwich-induced stupor sets in, I absentmindedly rub my eyes…then scold myself and mutter expletives under my breath, upon realizing that I have just turned my doe eyes into racoon eyes.

But since being introduced to L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara (say that five times fast), I’ve ended my self-imposed, work week mascara strike. Double Extend Beauty Tubes mimics the look of lash extensions by combining a nourishing base coat with tube technology, once only found in prestige mascaras (Blinc and Fiberwig).

loreal+beauty+tubes+mascara.jpg Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara
For half the price of the aforementioned mascaras, you get lush, lengthened lashes that won’t clump, run, smudge or flake. In fact, the other day, I accidentally fell asleep with my mascara still on (truth: went to bed without washing my face cuz I’m lazy) and when I awoke, my mascara looked ab fab and the color hadn’t migrated one bit.

I’m a gal who’s always running late, so I was initially skeptical about whether or not this 2-step mascara would fit into my free time-deptived lifestyle. So I was very happy to find that while Double Extend Beauty Tubes does involve an additional process, the extra time is minimal…the ‘Nourishing Base Coat’ doesn’t need to dry before you paint on the ‘Ultra Lengthening Tupe Top Coat.’
And here’s the best part…when it comes time to remove the mascara, all you need is warm water. No heavy duty makeup remover or elbow grease required. When washing your face (do as I say, not as I do), simply smooth the tubes away from your lashes with your fingertips, or hold a cotton pad soaked in warm water on the lashes for 30 seconds…the tubes will come off without leaving the surrounding area an inky mess.

The only downside to this mascara (and it’s a very nitpicky one) is the name. Because L’Oreal’s decided against giving this new mascara a totally unique moniker, it could be confused with L’Oreal’s Double Extend Lash Extender & Magnifier Mascara, which features the primer…but not the tube technology. So if you decide to give Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara a try, look for the red and white packaging.

Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week: L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lip Gloss

You may love lipgloss. But your lipgloss don’t love you back. You know how it goes. She’s like that flighty girlfriend who shows up at the party, makes a glossy but brief appearance – and before you know it, she’s gone without a trace.

infallible Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week: L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lip GlossL’Oreal knows the drill…which is why they created Infallible Never Fail Lip Gloss, the first longwearing gloss in one step. No touch ups, no top coats, no feathering and no fading – for six hours. No kidding!

I swear it’s not an urban legend because I’ve personally witnessed the miracle. The color clings to lips for hours, never falling flat. Yesterday, my friend gave me a totally unsolicited compliment three hours after I applied Infallible Lip Gloss in Bloom.

The patented ‘Petite Coeur’ applicator allows for precise, flawless application – so you don’t have to worry about going outside of the lines, which can be an issue with the more pigmented of the 16 shades. Besides Bloom, I’m also a big fan of Rebel Red, a gorgeous scarlet that I imagine will flatter a variety of skin tones. And because it’s infallible, the crimson color stays exactly where you put it – meaning you don’t end up with red smeared across your face à la Bette Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lip Gloss is available at a drugstore near you, and costs less than an Alexander Hamilton.

Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week: L’Oreal Paris HIP Jelly Balm

jellybalm Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: LOreal Paris HIP Jelly BalmI am absolutely obsessed with L’Oreal Paris HIP Jelly Balm right now. They’re the poor (wo)man’s MAC Tendertones…except they’re better, IMO.

The creamy balm lends a juicy pop of color to lips without the stickiness of your average gloss. The six shades have a magic quality that flatter all skin tones (I am partial to Plush). They’re so moutwatering and moisturizing that they render your chapstick obsolete. And when you’re having a bad day, HIP Jelly Balm is the perfect pick-me-up beauty buy.

They smell like cotton candy, taste like caramel, and cost less than $10. Does it get any better?

Buy the entire set without breaking the bank.

Available at mass market retail stores and at drugstore.com.

Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week: Sephora by OPI

sephora+by+opi Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: Sephora by OPIYesterday, I paid a visit to my friendly, neighborhood Sephora store to play around with Sephora by OPI, a collection of nail colors, hand treatments, and nail care products by OPI, available exclusively at Sephora stores.

The Sephora by OPI display, with testers of 54 fashion-forward shades, is a veritable polish playground. In the King of Prussia store, the display is situated right next to the registers…so I felt somewhat guilty for polluting the salespeople’s work area with nail polish fumes. But from the look of one cashier’s multi-colored manicure, I realized that not even the staff is immune to the temptation of the Sephora by OPI testers.

At $9 a bottle, these gorgeous polishes pack more of a financial punch than many other brands on the market – including the original OPI collection. But the green formulation (every shade is DBP, Toluene, and Formaldehyde-free) and saving a trip to another OPI retailer for your nail needs justifies the extra dollars and/or cents.

sephora+opi Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: Sephora by OPIAnd while I think that nail polishes should be judged on the merits of color, finish, ingredients and staying power, I have to give this collection bonus points for its cheeky monikers – such as Sample Sale, Skinny Jeans, Nonfat Soy Half Caff, It’s Somewhere in My Purse, Brunette on the Internet, Never Enough Shoes, and Beauty Junkie.

The Autumn & Eve Collection pays homage to the deeper, darker shades seen on fall 2008 runways.

Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week: Softlips Tinted Lip Conditioner

softlips+bronze Recessionistas Fabuless Pick of the Week: Softlips Tinted Lip Conditioner
Looking perfectly polished doesn’t entail a face full of makeup. Or going broke. Take today, for example…before leaving my apartment to run errands, I pulled my hair back into a sleek ponytail, quickly coated my lashes with Cover Girl LashBlast, and swiped on Softlips Tinted Conditioner in Bronze.

A simple and easy alternative to lipstick or gloss, Softlips Tinted Conditioners add a subtle hint of color to lips, while moisturizing and protecting with SPF 15. These conditioners aren’t heavy or waxy like traditional balms, and they’re conveniently packaged in a slim stick so you can easily tuck them in your pocket or purse.

Rose and Pearl (new shade) will flatter those with light and medium complexions. Bronze is an excellent choice for ladies with deeper skin tones.

For $10, all three can be yours. Put ‘em in your pocket and you’ll still have room left for your change.

Softlips Tinted Conditioners are available at mass retail, supermarkets and drugstores.
