Susana Monaco Flutter Tube Dress

I just had to share how much I adore this Susana Monaco 'Flutter Tube Dress' I just bought from Shopbop.com.  I'm usually very hesitant to buy clothing online because I'm short and curvy and I can't be assured that something will look right until I try it on. And even when I do buy clothes off the Internet, they're CONTINUE READING

Beautiful Things My Mother Taught Me

Mom and me, circa 1979 Disclosure: This post is sponsored by CoverGirl. Mother’s Day is this Sunday and I’m so excited. Not just because Mr. Spoiled Pretty and my son, Westley, are treating me to a decadent brunch. But because it’s an opportunity to celebrate my hero, Andrea Stamps. I must admit that until two years ago, Mother’s Day was just another CONTINUE READING

Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candles: 2 for $22

At Christmastime, I agonized over what to get my son's daycare teachers. There are 12 of them - and even though he has his two main teachers, they all have interaction with him and take excellent care of him. So I needed to buy 12 gifts to show my appreciation, without breaking the bank. $10 each seemed doable, except CONTINUE READING

IMAN Skin Tone Evener BB Creme SPF 15

As a beauty expert, I’m embarrassed by how late I am to the BB Cream party. In the past year, so many friends and colleagues have asked me about BB Creams—what’s the buzz, which brands are the best, etc. —and they would look at me funny when I admitted to not having tried BB Creams yet. I mean, they CONTINUE READING

CoverGirl Outlast Brilliant Shine Nail Gloss in Vio-last

I’m very fickle about my fingernails. Before I paint my nails or get them professionally did, I spend a inordinate amount of time pondering my polish options. I consider the season, recent trends, my wardrobe that week and anywhere special I might go. But despite all of this planning, I’m usually over my polish choice before it even dries. A More Perfect Union: Gabrielle Graces Essence Magazine’s September Cover

gabrielle+union+essence A More Perfect Union: Gabrielle Graces Essence Magazines September CoverYou know how they say magazines sell more issues based on which celeb is on the cover? Well, even though I know it’s true, I never paid a cover much mind, to be honest. I’m a magazine nut – and if the pages are filled with beauty, fashion and star style, I’m buying it – regardless of who is on the front.

But the September 2009 issue of Essence is a rare exception. As soon as I spotted Gabrielle Union, sporting an espresso bob with side-swept bangs for her 5th Essence cover, I snatched the mag off the shelf and made a beeline for the register.

“She was mad for her new look with the sexy bangs and shoulder-length cut,” recalls Beauty and Cover Director Mikki Taylor, who led the makeover team in creating this transformation.

When I brought the issue home, I showed Mr. Spoiled Pretty. “Isn’t her hair to-die, Graham?” I asked. To which he replied, “Um…isn’t that how you usually wear your hair when it’s down?” Well, yeah…I am pretty handy with the flat iron and this is the look I’m going for. But Gabrielle’s do is the gold standard, and my limited styling prowess has only achieved bronze status – at best.

But you best believe I’m going to tack this photo up and practice, practice, practice to perfect the look. Too bad there aren’t any products to help replicate Gabrielle’s flawless cocoa complexion and girl next door dimples.

The September 2009 issue of Essence is on newsstands now.

kim+kardashian+blonde+mario+dedivanovic+makeup Is Blonde Kim Kardashian Having More Fun With Makeup?

Kim Kardashian’s new blonde hair got me thinking about whether or not her makeup choices have changed. Is she using different hues to compliment her new do?

For the answer, I contacted my friend and Kim’s makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic. He told me, “Her makeup is not drastically different. We’re keeping in the warm tones for a softer look. Bronze skin, softer lashes, softer brows. Peachy tones. It’s so much fun doing her makeup as a blonde!”

Kristen Stewart at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards

Posted on by daneen in Celebrities, Hair, Hair Styling | Leave a comment

kristen+stewart+teen+choice+awards Kristen Stewart at the 2009 Teen Choice AwardsAdir Abergel, Frederic Fekkai celebrity stylist, tended to the locks of Twilight/New Moon star Kristen Stewart for the 2009 Teen Choice Awards.

Inspiration: 60s rock and roll pompadour with a spiky ponytail.

How to get the look: Adir first started out by applying the Fekkai Coiff Nonchalant Piecing & Forming Wax to the palm his hands and then added the Fekkai Coiff Extra Control Styling Gel for extra texture and shine. He applied this to her damp hair until it was full saturated.

To get the right texture with short layered haircut like Kristen’s, you must apply enough products until you get it to look right and feels right. It is important to fully saturate the hair with product.

Once the product was in the hair he took a blow-drier and hand dried into his desired style, directing all the hair with his fingers back to the nape of her neck.

To finish the look, he took the back of the hair and pulled it into a twisted ponytail letting the ends out and then spraying the front with the Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray. Make sure to leave random pieces out for a more chill vibe.

Fekkai products are available at Sephora, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and fekkai.com.

My Blowout Is The Bomb Y’all!

Posted on by daneen in Hair, Hair Styling | Leave a comment

My Blowout Is The Bomb Yall!Peep my super sleek blowout, courtesy of Emma H at Cutler Salon in NYC. Isn’t it amazin’? I’m glowing!

I was waltzing around the city that day thinkin’ I was too cute. You couldn’t tell me nothin’.

Emma tamed my tresses with a T3 hairdryer and flat iron, and polished it off with a little of Redken’s Sleek Obedience Anti-Frizz Solid Serum – a pomade that she recommended I invest in.

Another reason to love Emma? She talked me out of cutting my bangs, suggesting that I simply switch my part from the left to the right side. And she was right. I don’t know what kind of optical illusion it creates, but my hair looks 10 times more flattering, and it actually makes my face look thinner. And isn’t that the ultimate goal?

If I lived in New York, I would definitely be scheduling bi-weekly visits with Emma. In fact, I think I might just make an appointment for September when I return. Can’t be looking a hot mess at Fashion Week.

Oh, and did I mention that Emma does Rachael Ray’s hair?

Living Proof No Frizz Debuts Shampoo and Conditioner!!!

no+frizz Living Proof No Frizz Debuts Shampoo and Conditioner!!!I don’t know who is in the running for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. But I’ll tell you who should be – the people over at Living Proof.

Sure, they haven’t ended any wars or found a way to mend the broken healthcare system in the U.S., but they have achieved the unthinkable. Women worldwide are finally at peace with their hair thanks to Living Proof’s revolutionary No Frizz products.

Developed by a talented team of MIT scientists, No Frizz is a comprehensive collection of cutting-edge, humidity-resistant formulas that work for all hair types. And besides obliterating frizz, these products also manage to smooth hair without a heavy or greasy feel, impart lasting shine and softness, and repel dirt and oil so you can go longer between shampoos.

Ever since I started using the No Frizz styling products “frizz” has ceased to be a word in my vocabulary (except here, obv). I use No Frizz religiously and even take them to the salon with me when I’m getting me hair did. When Spoiled Pretty partnered with Living Proof for a giveaway, the winner wrote back – raving that these are products she’ll use FOR LIFE. I mean, just read her review and tell me you’re not convinced.

As if these styling products weren’t enough of a contribution to society, Living Proof now adds shampoo and conditioner to its repetoire.

living+proof+no+frizz+shampoo+and+conditioner Living Proof No Frizz Debuts Shampoo and Conditioner!!!“We like to refer to these two products as a labor of love for our scientists,” says CEO Rob Robillard. “When we first started introducing the No Frizz styling products to the press and to retailers out there, they kept saying — ‘why don’t you have a shampoo & conditioner?’ Then as all you fans out there learned how great the styling products were you too kept asking — why don’t you have a shampoo & conditioner? The answer was quite simple. We didn’t want to launch just any old shampoo and conditioner, we wanted it to be as revolutionary as our styling products. We wanted you to be blown away again.”

These new daily care products wash away frizz and provide heat protection from tools like blow driers, curling irons and flat irons. The Humidity Blocking, Weightlessly Hydrating, Sulfate-Free Shampoo was developed with PolyfluoroEster and SLMI, a gentle, sulfate-free surfactant, to remove any trace of dirt or oil without stripping the hair. It promises to be the perfect choice for everyday cleansing for all hair types, including color-treated hair. Humidity Blocking, Weightlessly Hydrating, Shine Restoring Conditioner is the natural companion to leave hair soft, shining and hydrated without weighing it down.

Moisture Restoring No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner will soon be added to the No Frizz family. It is an ideal option for drier hair, incorporating PolyfluoroEster with lightweight glycerin as the key moisturizing component instead of heavy oils, a first for a leave-in frizz-fighting product.

No Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner are available now at livingproof.com. The entire collection will launch in September 2009 at Sephora and QVC.

Luckily, Frédéric Fekkai feels the pain of hair-obsessed ladies living in a rain ravaged world.

For a limited time, they’ll be offering complimentary umbrellas to all salon patrons who brave the rain for any hair service. The umbrellas are free for those clients receiving treatments, and ten dollars for all other customers.
