Beautiful Things My Mother Taught Me

Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candles: 2 for $22

At Christmastime, I agonized over what to get my son's daycare teachers. There are 12 of them - and even though he has his two main teachers, they all have interaction with him and take excellent care of him. So I needed to buy 12 gifts to show my appreciation, without breaking the bank. $10 each seemed doable, except CONTINUE READING

IMAN Skin Tone Evener BB Creme SPF 15

As a beauty expert, I’m embarrassed by how late I am to the BB Cream party. In the past year, so many friends and colleagues have asked me about BB Creams—what’s the buzz, which brands are the best, etc. —and they would look at me funny when I admitted to not having tried BB Creams yet. I mean, they CONTINUE READING

CoverGirl Outlast Brilliant Shine Nail Gloss in Vio-last

I’m very fickle about my fingernails. Before I paint my nails or get them professionally did, I spend a inordinate amount of time pondering my polish options. I consider the season, recent trends, my wardrobe that week and anywhere special I might go. But despite all of this planning, I’m usually over my polish choice before it even dries. My New Arm Candy: Rebecca Minkoff Swing Bag

After beauty products, handbags are my secondary addiction. But when it comes to arm candy, I have discriminating taste. For me, the perfect handbag seamlessly marries fashion with function, is handcrafted from high-quality materials, has really unique hardware and is classic but edgy - all at the same time. I don't like to carry the of-the-moment "it" bag. I CONTINUE READING

Jada Pinkett Smith – You Are Not Rihanna

JadaPinkett CrazyHair Jada Pinkett Smith You Are Not Rihanna
Jada Pinkett Smith unveiled this new hairstyle (I don’t know what else to call it) at Victoria Beckham’s 34th star-studded birthday party. This Salt-N-Pepa throwback just isn’t working for me. I love me some Jada, but someone needs to point out that not everyone can pull off the edgy hair. That’s Rihanna’s schtick. I say, unless you can do it better – don’t do it at all.

It’s like being a contestant on American Idol and choosing to sing I Will Always Love You. Crackhead or not, Whitney’s got that song on lock – so don’t even go there.

Kim Vo’s New Haircare Line

kimvo Kim Vos New Haircare LineKim Vo’s new haircare line mixes old school with new school. The celebrity hairstylist’s products marry Vietnamese botanicals and French Nanotechnology.

As a child, Vo used to watch his Vietnamese grandmother wash her hair with rice wine to make it shine. So when he set out to create his line of hair products, naturally, he asked her to consult. The ingredients in Vo’s line include rice, soy, lotus, and seaweed. But the line’s secret weapon is Boket, known for thousands of years in Vietnam as the secret to beautiful, healthy hair. Boket pods have a high sugar content – which locks in moisture and nutrients, and results in a silky, shiny hair.

vo Kim Vos New Haircare LineME-10, created by the latest French nanotechnology, is the second main active ingredient in the line. The scientifically advanced silicone conditions dry, damaged locks. It also extends and enhances hair color because it penetrates the cuticle on a cellular level.

The Kim Vo product line includes: Moisturizing Shampoo, Moisturizing Conditioner, Moisturizing Masque, Volumizing Shampoo, Volumizing Conditioner, Volumizing Masque, Styling Crème, Dry Serum, Glaze, Root Booster, Weightless Hairspray, and Texturizing Paste.

Goody, Goody Hairbrush

mosaic Goody, Goody Hairbrush
Given the exorbitant amount of money that I invest in my hairstyling products, tools, and accessories, you would think that I would put more consideration into my combs and brushes. That’s what you would think, but you’d be wrong.

I’m embarrassed to admit how long I used my old hairbrushes. So I won’t even go there. Let’s just say that my brushes were so old and so busted that they probably did my hair more harm than good. So when I heard about Goody’s new Mosaic collection, I immediately decided to upgrade.

Mosaic is the company’s first line of styling tools developed specifically with diverse hair textures in mind. If you’ve got “ethnic” hair – whether it’s relaxed, natural, curly, wavy, straight, short or long – you must invest in this collection.

According to Goody, “Today, over 30 percent of the American population is multicultural. In a recent study, hair was found to be the single most important beauty priority with both the African American and Hispanic female consumer.”

In creating the Mosaic line, Goody consulted with Chuck Amos, celebrity stylist to Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Kelis. The collection includes tools in a variety of categories – brushes, combs, rollers, wraps, and at-home salon tools.

Mosaic’s most unique item is, hands down, the new relaxer sponge applicators. If you’ve got relaxed hair, you know that most applicators have bristles that can scrape the the skin, causing the scalp to sting or burn. But these disposable applicators are made of sponge to be gentle on your scalp and are firm enough for even application.

mosaic relaxed+hairbrush Goody, Goody HairbrushBut back to the brushes…Mosaic boasts several different types, for all kinds of hair textures – even curly! But my two new beloved brushes are the Mosaic Ouchless Brush for Relaxed Hair (left) and the Mosaic So Smooth Ceramic Boar Cushion Brush. The former, made especially for chemically straightened hair and extensions, gently styles hair to minimize breakage. And the latter’s natural and synthetic bristles leave my hair glossy and frizz-free.

Mmm Mmm Goody!

Mosaic by Goody ($1.49-$12.99) is available at mass market retailers nationwide.
