“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” -Gwyneth Paltrow
If you let me loose in a makeup store, chances are I’m going to head for the lipsticks and glosses first. I gravitate towards pinks and neutrals, and don’t usually give reds the time of day. Oh how wrong I’ve been.
I was recently introduced to Besame’s Enchanting Lipstick in Red Velvet, and it has absolutely has won me over. This might sound odd, but I would compare it to a Jersey gown…while wearing it, you look ultra-feminine and sophisticated – but feel completely comfortable.
Red Velvet is a neutral red, so it’s wearable and compliments a variety of skin tones. The creamy, semi-matte finish ensures an elegant lip look that won’t feather. And I’m impressed by the unique double design – use the tip to line lips before filling in. Genius!
And how gorgeous is the gold bullet packaging? I imagine iconic beauties like Grace Kelly and Dorothy Dandridge carried something like this in their purses. Or perhaps a Bond girl might hide this in her décolletage.
Apply straight from the tube for a boldly pigmented pout. Or dab on with your finger for an effortless-looking stain. If you’re more of a gloss gal (I feel ya), swipe Besame’s Enriched Lip Glaze in Crystal on top…it’s non-sticky and smells faintly of coconut.
Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Elle Bag Charm features an elle Yves Saint Laurent solid perfume (woody and floral notes – Peony, Pink Berries, and Patchouli) and a fuchsia pearly lip gloss. This multitasking accessory adds instant glamour to a bag or a belt, and is perfect for gals on the go.
Available at Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus.
Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics describes their Reflection Lipgloss as clear and glassy, with a hint of shimmer. But don’t believe them. It’s so much more than that.
It’s more like a white-gold pearlescent shimmer shine that takes your lip look to the next level. Wear it on bare lips, or over your favorite lip color to kick it up a notch.
Check out my pout (pictured, left). I’m wearing Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Lipstick in Cuvee (shimmer w/ a hint of pink and brown), with Lipgloss in Reflection layered on top.
I have both excellent penmanship and a penchant for liquid eyeliner. Which is why I was so enthused to receive a package from Hourglass – containing their new Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner.
The pen is easy to hold and control – which results in a precise, professional-looking line. And the water- and smudge-proof formula dries quickly to prevent streaks and smears. I’m not exaggerating, ladies…once applied, this liner ain’t going nowhere. But for all its staying power, it easily washes off with a few swipes of makeup remover.
Though you might instinctively reach for Cognac (dark brown) or Ebony (black), I dare you to toss Indigo (deep navy blue) into your basket. At first glance, it looks black – but you’ll know the difference when you see how it makes your eyes POP.
Check out my pretty scribbles…
And while we’re on the topic of Hourglass, I had to share my experience with their Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss. I was testing the shade, Origami, while my husband and I were watching TV the other day. After haphazardly slicking the creamy gloss on my bottom lip, Graham looked at me and said, “Wow. That looks really nice.” Huh? I’ve never received an unsolicited lip color compliment from him. Neva eva. And at the time of said compliment, I was only wearing the gloss on one lip! This stuff is magic.
Hourglass cosmetics are available at Sephora.
Last week, I encouraged you all to jump on board The Juicy Tubes World Tour – nine new lip glosses, each decorated with an illustration by uber-hot designer Christopher Kane.
The shades, names and flavors were born from Kane’s fashion travels. From Rio, where, according to Kane, “the girls have an incredible kind of beauty,” to Paris, “the fashion capital of the world,” to New York, where “girls are groomed, sophisticated and so well dressed,” each gloss captures the excitement of the globe’s hottest cities.
I just received some close-ups of the sketches, and couldn’t wait to share them with you…
