It’s getting downright chilly in Philly. In a matter of days, my lips started cracking up – like they’d been watching a Chris Rock comedy special. Luckily, I discovered Yu-Be, the #1 selling medicated, vitamin-enriched skin care cream in Japan.
Yu-Be is a Glycerin-based moisturizing cream enriched with Vitamin E, Vitamin B2 and Camphor. The uniquely high Glycerin content, achieved through a special manufacturing process in Japan, makes Yu-Be very effective on severely dry skin.
What sets Yu-Be apart from other lip treatments is the highly absorptive formula. Your thirsty lips will drink it in, and it will hydrate, heal and lock in moisture for hours. Yu-Be leaves behind soft, supple lips – without the greasy, balmy finish. Which means that, when your lips are especially jacked up, you needn’t choose between a cushy restorative treatment and a cute lip color. Just dab Yu-Be on and wait a minute…then swipe on your favorite lipstick or gloss, and you’re good to go.
In addition to curing cracked lips, Yu-Be also heals and prevents split cuticles and smoothes rough skin. Use it to soften calluses and hard, cracked heels. It replenishes lost moisture from frequent hand washing and minimizes scarring from burns. Even world-class mountain climbers from Japan use it to protect their skin from the harsh cold, wind, water and sun on expeditions to the top of Mt. Everest!
Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream To Go (1.25 oz tube) is the perfect size for tossing into your purse or taking on trips.
Shop Yu-Be at Amazon.com, Beauty.com, Sephora and yu-be.com.
One of my favorite things to do is go to my local MAC store – without agenda – and let one of the masterful makeup artists make me over. You’d be surprised by what you end up purchasing. Typically, they’re products and colors that you would have never considered on your own. Sometimes, the best way to bust out of a beauty rut is to seek professional help and keep an open mind.
Here’s my advice: don’t focus on a particular product or color family. Just sit down, relax and let the salesperson have at it. And that’s exactly what I did this weekend. After arriving at the Nordstrom store in King of Prussia, I made a beeline for the MAC counter. I was warmly greeted by Brenda, one of the makeup artists. I pointed to my pout (I was rocking my own version of the Kim Kardashian pale lip) and told her I needed an update.
Brenda quickly got to work…pulling lip liners, lipsticks, and glosses in various shades and finishes. Frankly, some of them scared me a little bit. But that’s part of the fun. And the genius of MAC products is that the products and colors are very wearable, and flattering on a variety of skin tones. It’s very easy to, in the immortal words of Tim Gunn, “make it work.” There’s a lot of shades that scream ‘hot mess’ in the package…but look scorching HOT on the skin.
So in the end, I purchased Lip Pencil in Dervish (low-key mauve), Lipstick in Captive (pinkish-plum satin) and Plushglass in Oversexed (sheer red with small gold pearl). Above, you can see what the products look like separately – as well as how absolutely beautiful they look layered.
And remember how I said to keep an open mind? Here’s why…
This is a pic of Oversexed Plushglass in the tube. Would you have picked this up and tried it out? Me neither.
So if you’re near a MAC store or counter…go play. MAC makeup artists are some of the most friendly and inventive in the industry. Put yourself in their capable hands and you won’t be disappointed. And if you’re in the Philly area, go see Brenda – tell her Spoiled Pretty sent you!

September 2008 at all MAC locations and maccosmetics.com.
My complexion has orange undertones. So when MAC sent me samples of Neo Sci-Fi to review and I unwrapped Electro Lipstick, I was like, “Well, what am I supposed to do with this?” The neon tangerine case isn’t too far off from the “bright orange lustre” lipstick inside the tube.
But be not afraid. Once again, MAC pulls a fast one. Electro is genius. I didn’t think I could pull off a such a carroty color, but this shade has made me a believer. My only advice is to keep the rest of your makeup minimal. Don’t make the mistake of going overboard on the eyes or glopping gloss over top of the lipstick. You don’t need it. All you need is Electro plus your pretty face.
Don’t think you can wear orange? Think I’m the exception to the rule? My friends Kristen and Toya are also enamored with Electro. Check out their reviews.
In the photo above, I paired MAC Electro with two coats of Shu Uemura Precise Volume Mascara Waterproof.
I’m the type of person who loves surprises. As long as they’re good ones.
Take, for example, MAC’s new Tendertone Lip Balm in Honey Bare. In the pot, it’s a shimmery honeydew melon. The folks at MAC describe it as “sheer peach with white pearl.”
Either way, it should’ve spelled disaster for a tan girl like me. Instead, there are no words to accurately describe how delectably delish this balm is.
Leave it to MAC to find a way to make something so wrong look so amazingly right. On my skin, it’s honey golden goodness. It looks irresistably sexy.
There are nine other shades in the Tendertones collection, but Honey Bare is the hidden gem. Snatch it up before word gets out.
“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.” -Gwyneth Paltrow
If you let me loose in a makeup store, chances are I’m going to head for the lipsticks and glosses first. I gravitate towards pinks and neutrals, and don’t usually give reds the time of day. Oh how wrong I’ve been.
I was recently introduced to Besame’s Enchanting Lipstick in Red Velvet, and it has absolutely has won me over. This might sound odd, but I would compare it to a Jersey gown…while wearing it, you look ultra-feminine and sophisticated – but feel completely comfortable.
Red Velvet is a neutral red, so it’s wearable and compliments a variety of skin tones. The creamy, semi-matte finish ensures an elegant lip look that won’t feather. And I’m impressed by the unique double design – use the tip to line lips before filling in. Genius!
And how gorgeous is the gold bullet packaging? I imagine iconic beauties like Grace Kelly and Dorothy Dandridge carried something like this in their purses. Or perhaps a Bond girl might hide this in her décolletage.
Apply straight from the tube for a boldly pigmented pout. Or dab on with your finger for an effortless-looking stain. If you’re more of a gloss gal (I feel ya), swipe Besame’s Enriched Lip Glaze in Crystal on top…it’s non-sticky and smells faintly of coconut.
