Beautiful Things My Mother Taught Me

Mom and me, circa 1979 Disclosure: This post is sponsored by CoverGirl. Mother’s Day is this Sunday and I’m so excited. Not just because Mr. Spoiled Pretty and my son, Westley, are treating me to a decadent brunch. But because it’s an opportunity to celebrate my hero, Andrea Stamps. I must admit that until two years ago, Mother’s Day was just another CONTINUE READING

Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candles: 2 for $22

At Christmastime, I agonized over what to get my son's daycare teachers. There are 12 of them - and even though he has his two main teachers, they all have interaction with him and take excellent care of him. So I needed to buy 12 gifts to show my appreciation, without breaking the bank. $10 each seemed doable, except CONTINUE READING

IMAN Skin Tone Evener BB Creme SPF 15

As a beauty expert, I’m embarrassed by how late I am to the BB Cream party. In the past year, so many friends and colleagues have asked me about BB Creams—what’s the buzz, which brands are the best, etc. —and they would look at me funny when I admitted to not having tried BB Creams yet. I mean, they CONTINUE READING

CoverGirl Outlast Brilliant Shine Nail Gloss in Vio-last

I’m very fickle about my fingernails. Before I paint my nails or get them professionally did, I spend a inordinate amount of time pondering my polish options. I consider the season, recent trends, my wardrobe that week and anywhere special I might go. But despite all of this planning, I’m usually over my polish choice before it even dries. My New Arm Candy: Rebecca Minkoff Swing Bag

After beauty products, handbags are my secondary addiction. But when it comes to arm candy, I have discriminating taste. For me, the perfect handbag seamlessly marries fashion with function, is handcrafted from high-quality materials, has really unique hardware and is classic but edgy - all at the same time. I don't like to carry the of-the-moment "it" bag. I CONTINUE READING

Lavender Lip Trend

Have you noticed a lotta lavender lips lately? I have. Lady Gaga kicked off the trend in February when she paired a light purple pout with an oversized hair bow. Since then, they’ve appeared sporadically on the Fashion Week runways. But now I can’t help but notice that they’re cropping up everywhere.

New Moon star Christian Serratos (who plays Angela) wore lilac lipstick to the movie’s premiere. And Alicia Keys sports a lavender gloss in her new video, Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart (photo below).

mac+syrup+lipstick+and+foolishly+fab+plushglass Lavender Lip TrendThe look is like an oxygen-deprived pale pink mouth. To create a lavender lip to compliment my caramel complexion, I use the duo seen at left: MAC Lipstick in Syrup and MAC Plushglass in Foolishly Fab (which has, foolishly, been discontinued).

To steal the look, I recommend a pale pink or lavender lipstick with a sheer lilac gloss on top. For a look that’s more wearable, just a gloss will do the trick. Try: MAC Cremesheen Glass in Ever So Rich, MAC Lustreglass in Flashmode or Morning Glory, or MAC Dazzleglass in Funtabulous.

I just found out about this cool new product via emakemeup.com, a great online community for beauty lovers. Anyhoo…

Inspired by Mohammad Ali’s famous quote “I float like a butterfly sting like a bee,” these lipsticks lie down as sheer as a butterfly wing and shimmer with a hint of turquoise when the light hits them. Supposedly, this blue flash is very flattering and helps your teeth appear whiter.

Butterfly Ball Shimmer Treatment Lipstick ($20) is available in five shades: Float, Fly, Trance, Moment and Goodbye.

New Nude Lip Combo: Tenderheart Plus Love Nectar

This week, I unwittingly created the sexiest nude lip combination. Apply Clinique Different Lipstick in Tenderheart (midtone blushing nude brown), then top it off with MAC Lustreglass in Love Nectar (ultra-soft apricot with pearl). I’m a genius.

Yankee Candle Flavored Lip Balm

yankee+candle+flavored+lip+balm Yankee Candle Flavored Lip BalmNow that the weather has a little chill to it, my summery scented candles just aren’t cutting it anymore. So today, I stopped by my local Yankee Candle store to find one with more of a fall fragrance (I decided on Macintosh Spice). Don’t you just love Yankee Candle? They kill me with their spot-on accurate scents.

Anyway, when I got to the register, I spotted an unexpected surprise. Yankee Candle now sells Flavored Lip Balm ($3.99)! Packaged like mini versions of their signature jar candles, these balms are made with beeswax, organic extra virgin olive oil, organic hemp seed oil, vitamin E and rosemary – and feature SPF 15. Available in five flavors, I picked up the Vanilla Lime (one of my all-time favorite YC scents).

New York Fashion Week: Alice & Olivia, Spring 2010

alice+and+olivia+spring+2010+rtw New York Fashion Week: Alice & Olivia, Spring 2010For the Alice + Olivia Spring 2010 presentation, MAC created two very different makeup looks. The first was a black super smoky eye, worn by The Plastiscines, who performed at the show.

The models, on the other hand, sported two different shades of pink shadow (Rosy Outlook and Perky) along with a white shade (Just So). Irridescent powder was applied to the cheekbones and the inner corner of the eye. Cream blush in So Sweet was blended onto the cheek, and the above pink shadows were blended together and layered on top. The brow shape was kept natural and kept in place with brow gel.

Angel Lipstick (Kim Kardashian‘s fave) was applied to lips, with Lipglass in Underage and English Accent on top. Silver dust was also mixed with moisturizer and applied to the entire body, for a ethereal glow.

Key Makeup Artist Nadine Luke emphasized that the look flatters a wide range of complexions, as evidenced by my backstage photos.

“The hair for Alice + Olivia is a crossroads of edgy and girly,” said Frédéric Fekkai. “We created a look for funky, confident women.”

Andre Rodman, Lead Stylist for Fekkai added a fun, punky edginess to the s weet, girly looks at the Alice + Olivia show. To get the look Andre twirled crimped hair around a double barreled iron in a figure eight pattern. He then pulled the front piece to the side, smoothed it with Fekkai Coiff Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Crème and secured it neatly with jeweled pins. Finally, Andre set the style using Full Blown Volume Lifting Hairspray.

Sephora+Fame+Lip+Gloss Almost Fame ous: Sephora Lip Glosses Inspired by Fame Re makeI love me a dance movie – a la Dirty Dancing, Center Stage and Save The Last Dance*. I’ve even been known to willingly watch Honey, in its entirety, if the TV remote has gone into hiding and I’m too lazy to look for it. So I’m kind of keyed up for the upcoming Fame re-make (I am a child of the 80s, after all). But what I’m even more excited about is Sephora’s new Fame Brilliant Shine Lip Glosses.

As part of a partnership with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), Sephora introduces five limited-edition glosses, now available in stores and online. With your lips dressed in these lustrous, non-sticky, moisturizing glosses, people will see you and cry.

You’ve got big dreams?
You want fame?
Well, fame costs.
And Sephora is where you start paying…in Hamiltons (or two Lincolns, or ten Washingtons).

Glosses are available in five scene stealing shades: In The Spotlight, Raw Talent, Rising Star, Standing Ovation and Starring Role. Baby, remember these names…
