Creme-a-licious!

When they release a new collection, the kind folks at MAC usually send me a sampling of goodies. The care package whets my appetite, and then I head to the MAC store/counter to pick up more beauty treats. But I was so jonesing for the new Cremesheen collection, I couldn’t help myself. I totally jumped the gun and bought myself Speak Louder (clean poppy blue pink) to satisfy my craving.

Lustre used to be my favorite MAC lipstick finish. Today, Cremesheen might just have taken the title. Like Lustre, Cremesheen is somewhat sheer with a beautiful sheen…but the consistency is creamier (hence the name) and the color is more amplified.

Robin, the wonderfully helpful makeup artist at Macy’s midtown Philadelphia store, suggested that I top Speak Louder with Lustreglass in Pinkarat (soft-toned pink with gold pearl).

I have to admit, it was an impulse buy. But seeing how delicious Pinkarat looks on its own proved to me that an impulse purchase can be a sound investment.

New From MAC: Manish Arora Collection

India’s top designer, Manish Arora, teams up with MAC to create an extravagant limited-edition color collection. With its kaleidoscopic clash of shades, gem-studded compacts and maximalist vibe, this makes Indian pop culture fashionably the rage!

The Manish Arora collection for MAC consists of an eyeshadow palette, lipstick, Lipglass and blush. All are sold out online, but may still be available in stores.

Live from backstage at the Fall 2008 Collections, It-Boy designer, Esteban Cortazar, and MAC have come together to create a special colour collection as dreamy, refined, and, well, Parisienne as anything this side of the Avenue Georges V, exclusively ours! A limited edition for lips, cheeks, eyes…chez Ungaro, only for MAC.

“Our association with Ungaro is really exciting as we’ve supported Esteban for many years. He’s reflective of an attitude and movement for venerable fashion houses to reinvent their brands by employing new emerging talent, something that’s a core value of MAC,” explains Creative Director, James Gager.

The collaboration also represents the many personalities and aesthetics to which MAC makeup appeals. “MAC’s a high/low fashion brand,” continues Gager. “We follow equally couture and street culture, a sense of yin and yang is inherent to the brand and our customers – heavy-duty dramatic makeup alongside that which is girly, fresh and light. Following from our dramatic and outrageous collaboration with McQueen last year, we felt that Ungaro represented another side of MAC’s personality.”

My MAC Playdate: Like A Kid In A Candy Store

One of my favorite things to do is go to my local MAC store – without agenda – and let one of the masterful makeup artists make me over. You’d be surprised by what you end up purchasing. Typically, they’re products and colors that you would have never considered on your own. Sometimes, the best way to bust out of a beauty rut is to seek professional help and keep an open mind.

Here’s my advice: don’t focus on a particular product or color family. Just sit down, relax and let the salesperson have at it. And that’s exactly what I did this weekend. After arriving at the Nordstrom store in King of Prussia, I made a beeline for the MAC counter. I was warmly greeted by Brenda, one of the makeup artists. I pointed to my pout (I was rocking my own version of the Kim Kardashian pale lip) and told her I needed an update.

Brenda quickly got to work…pulling lip liners, lipsticks, and glosses in various shades and finishes. Frankly, some of them scared me a little bit. But that’s part of the fun. And the genius of MAC products is that the products and colors are very wearable, and flattering on a variety of skin tones. It’s very easy to, in the immortal words of Tim Gunn, “make it work.” There’s a lot of shades that scream ‘hot mess’ in the package…but look scorching HOT on the skin.

So in the end, I purchased Lip Pencil in Dervish (low-key mauve), Lipstick in Captive (pinkish-plum satin) and Plushglass in Oversexed (sheer red with small gold pearl). Above, you can see what the products look like separately – as well as how absolutely beautiful they look layered.

And remember how I said to keep an open mind? Here’s why…
