Hello Mario,

Being able to ask you a beauty question is such a treat because I’m such a fan of your work. My question is this: I’m in the market for some new makeup brushes and I’m wondering which you recommend. I’m not looking for brush set suggestions – I’m more looking for awesome brushes to round out my collection. Please help!

Thank you,
Mariah

Hey Mariah,

Makeup brushes are so important to me and I use tons of them! Here are some of my favorite brushes that I’ve been using for years: Stila #15 Double-Sided Crease and Liner Brush; I use the smaller side for a detailed crease. Stila #24 Double-Sided Illuminating Powder Brush is great to contour the cheeks and frame the face with bronzer. I also like Make Up For Ever’s Eyebrow Brush. The Concealer Brush by Benefit Cosmetics is great for working under the eyes and my favorite Retractable Lip Brush is by Billy B Beauty.

Hope you get to try some of these brushes to round out your collection! Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

Interview With François Nars

Interview With François NarsNARS is one of my all-time favorite brands – and if you’re a lover of makeup, it’s probably high on your list too. Whenever I visit Sephora, I never do a lap before committing to a location. My first stop is always the NARS counter.

I’ll never forget the time when my sister and I were shopping at the local mall and she started to get cranky; I’m a shopper of Olympic proportions, whereas she starts to tire after just a few hours. So when we stopped by Sephora, I bought her NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Rated R and it calmed her right down. That’s the power of NARS, people.

Recently, my girl Amber scored an exclusive interview with the legendary François Nars. Did you know that his most-used makeup item is NARS Cosmetics Satin Lipstick in Honolulu Honey – which just so happens to be celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic’s go-to nude lipstick?

For more dishy deets on François Nars, like how he creates a smoky eye and the inspiration behind the Schiap lipstick and nail polish shade, visit dailymakeover.com.

Hi Mario,

If you’re reading this, it means that you chose my question – which is so exciting!!! I am a big fan and am awed by your talent. I’ve been reading your column on Spoiled Pretty since it started, and have really improved as an amateur makeup artist. So thanks! Anyway, here is my question – I love the nude lip look, but I never know how to pull it off. How do I find my right shade of nude, and do you have any tools/techniques for pulling off the look? And can you recommend some of you all-time favorite nude lipsticks/glosses?

Your biggest fan,
Kirstie

mario+dedivanovic+kim+kardashian+nude+lips Makeup Mondays With Mario: Your Perfect Nude LipHey Kirstie,

Let me start out by saying that you’re very sweet!

When choosing nude shades for your lips, you should keep a couple things in mind: light pinks look better on fare skin because they will most likely have too much white in them for darker complexions. Peachy/beige nudes look great on medium to darker skin tones because of the yellow pigments in them.

If your lips are naturally red or dark, pat some foundation on your lips first to block out the color so that the true lipstick shade shows. My fave nudes are Honolulu Honey Lipstick by NARS and Josie Maran Plumping Lip Gloss in Optimism.

Hi Mario,

I love all the work you do. I really enjoy your “Get the Face” posts on your blog. My question is: What is the best way to apply red lipstick and how do you stop it from bleeding?

Thanks,
Priscilla

red+lips Makeup Mondays With Mario: Red LipstickHi Priscilla,

There are a few great tips that I can share with you when it comes to applying red lipstick. First, line your lips with a matte pencil that is similar to the lipstick color or darker. Using a triangular shaped sponge, dip it into loose translucent powder and apply it right below the outer corner of the lip line. Don’t blend the powder yet as that will be last. This will prevent the lipstick from bleeding. Apply the red lipstick using a lip brush and make sure to fill the lips in completely. Take a tissue and blot your lips – that should absorb some of the lipstick, leaving a sort of stained effect on the lips. Apply one more coat of lipstick, then sweep away the loose powder from below…and now you’re good to go. Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario.

false+eyelashes Makeup Mondays With Mario: How To Apply False LashesHey Mario!

Before I ask my question, I just want to say that I am a big admirer of yours and look forward to your column on Spoiled Pretty every week. I think it’s so great that fans like me get an opportunity to ask you beauty questions…and I would be so thrilled if you could answer mine. Okay, so here’s my question: how exactly do you apply false eyelashes? I have a few pairs in my beauty kit, but every time I try to apply them, I just make a mess and give up. Can you give some step-by-step tips? Also, do you have any favorite brands you can recommend? Thanks!
-Irina

Dear Irina,

First of all, thank you for your kind words and for putting a smile on my face this morning! I love sharing my knowledge of makeup and beauty and hope that my answers to your questions solve whatever makeup dilemmas you may have. Before I explain some tips and tricks about false eyelashes, remember that a little mess can be cleaned up, so giving up is not an option!

Before applying false lashes, determine what style or shape works best for your eyes. Strip lashes will most likely have to be cut shorter on the corners for a perfect fit. Some find individual lashes easier to apply and more natural looking. I think it depends on your own lashes and “look” you’re going for.

Start by curling lashes and applying mascara as usual. Hold the lash with fingers or tweezers and apply some lash glue along the entire strip, making sure not to use too little or too much of the product. Now STOP. The glue must dry a bit to a tacky texture before it’s placed. You will know its ready when it darkens a bit and looks almost dry.

Now you can take the lash with tweezers or even your hand, tilt head up a bit and apply the lash right over your own lashes. Make sure to try and get it as close to the roots as possible. Curling your lashes and false lashes together (with very little pressure) works beautifully to sort of join and blend the two. For added drama, apply more mascara and then separate any clumps if needed.

Some extra tips – use Dark Tone Duo Eyelash Glue. It dries dark and comes in a user-friendly tune.

Lining the top lids with a dark liner really finishes the look and conceals any imperfections along the upper lash line. 😉

For fun and glamorous lashes, try Ja’Maal Buster lashes and Smoke and Mirrors lashes. Another fave of mine and classic are the Ardell lashes which come in tons of different styles.

Remember practice makes pretty! Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario.xo,

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Mascara Tips for Long Lashes

mmwmd large Makeup Mondays With Mario: Mascara Tips for Long Lashes

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

long+eyelashes Makeup Mondays With Mario: Mascara Tips for Long LashesHi Mario!

I have the opposite problem of most girls. I have really really long eyelashes. And while I love them, I find that no matter what mascara I use, it a) clumps up, b) won’t curl my lashes upwards (and stay that way) and c) because there are so many lashes, they get caught together. Often times it’s the bottom and the top lashes that have joined together, or the smaller lashes on either end of the eye. I would like to be able to find a mascara or technique that will allow me to curl my lashes and make sure to separate my lashes. Any tips you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

-Lil’ Sara

Lil’ Sara with the not so lil’ lashes! I’m sure the girls reading this right now could only wish to have your “problem.” I’d recommend starting out curling the lashes first. If you can’t get the ends in the curler, use an individual lash curler. Japonesque makes a great one. Before applying mascara to the lashes, wipe off the mascara wand with a tissue. Try applying only to the roots and then very little or none up the tips of the lashes. If you apply too much to the tips, the weight will cause the lash to straighten. Now separate your lashes with a lash comb and that should get rid of any clumps. Let mascara dry, then take the individual curler and curl the outer corners or whole lash again. Follow with one more coat of mascara to hold the curl. Good luck and thanx for visiting MMWM!

Mario
