bump+nose Makeup Mondays With Mario: Nose Job

Hello Mario!

I have a roman nose with the classic bump on the bridge. I’ve been searching on how to minimize this problem, but can only find tips on how to minimize a wide or long nose. I understand that dark recedes and light makes things more pronounced. I got so frustrated with my lack of contouring skills that I decided to cancel out my whole nose and just shade the whole thing. Boy was that a mistake – haha. For some reason my nose was even more pronounced! Can you offer a some kind of makeup suggestion for this beak of mine? Thank you so much, and I love your work!

xoxo,
Susan

Hi Susan,

I’m no stranger to the beak, especially being of Albanian decent! My mother and father both actually have “the roman nose,” as do so many men and women in eastern Europe. Unfortunately, makeup will not make such a big difference in decreasing the bump on the bridge. You will see best results in a photo once contoured properly rather than in person. Here’s how to give your self a mini nose job…

You were right about dark shades receding and lighter shades emphasizing and bringing things out. Keep that in mind and with a small shadow brush, apply your lighter shade below and above the bump in the center. Make sure the bump is matte and with the darker, matte shade, very lightly sweep over it. There should be no harsh lines visible. Again, using the darker shade, you’re now going to apply it to the tip of the nose that hangs downward so when you’re looking straight at yourself in the mirror it should appear as if your nose ends where the dark shadow on the tip begins. Contouring takes a lot of practice so I advise that you try this out many times before you go out. Good luck!

Mario,

This is so exciting being able to ask you a question. I am a regular visitor to your blog and have learned so much about makeup from you. But my question isn’t about makeup. It’s about skincare. I’d love to know what your favorite skincare products (cleanser, moisturizer, scrub, makeup remover and lip balm) are and why.

Thanks and keep up the awesome work,
Jessica

mmwm Makeup Mondays With Mario: Skin Care Superstars!

Hi Jessica,

I have tons of favorites when it comes to skincare products. For cleansing, I love La Mer The Cleansing Foam; it feels amazing, smells good and spreads nicely. A less expensive and comparable cleanser (and one of my all time faves) is Olay Deep Cleansing Face Wash with Witch Hazel. A great, basic and cheap scrub is St. Ives Apricot Scrub. I try not to exfoliate every day though – it can be too harsh on your skin. Once or twice a week I use DDF’s Glycolic 5% Exfoliating Wash. To remove your makeup, I recommend Josie Maran’s Bear Naked Wipes. I love everything about them and I’m sure you will too. Wipe away makeup and then follow with your normal skincare routine.

When it comes to moisturizing, I tend to use products that are not too thick or oily. I love La Mer The Moisturizing Lotion. It comes in a pump and is more lightweight than the popular creme. Cetaphil is still a favorite of mine also and works well on a lot of skin types. Sara Happ’s The Lip Slip is a very nice lip balm and you should try out her lip exfoliators that come in lots of great flavors. I also love MAC’s Tinted Lip Conditioner w/ SPF 15. I saved the best for last – The Eye Balm by La Mer. It’s a new eye cream and it’s the creme de la creme! I use it like three times a day and I LOVE IT!

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Too Light Undereye Concealer?

Hey Mario…

You have a gift that would make any woman feel a little more confident after you’ve worked your ‘magic’.

My question is how come the concealer under my eyes looks fine in the mirror when I put it on, but in photos it looks ghastly white?!? I can’t figure it out.

I use Laura Mercier camo concealer and then pat Makeup Professional translucent powder over to set it. What gives???

Thanks,
Michelina

Michelina,
A lot of people make the same mistake with going too light under the eyes. It’s no secret that I like to highlight and lighten that area of the face but there’s a pretty fine line between bright and white. Try using a concealer and/or powder that is a shade darker. Also, check to see that your loose powder doesn’t have light-reflecting or shimmery pigment in it. To the human eye, it’s difficult to see – but the bright flash of a camera will catch it and magnify it. Another thing to try is to not use too much product where it’s opaque. Instead, apply with a lighter hand. It’s always good to take pics of yourself with a digital camera to test it out and see how you will look. Hope this helps.

Hi Mario!

I want you to know I’m a HUGE fan and your work is PHENOMENAL!! Always flawless!! Well, it’s that time of the year again – it’s so hot and humid. Is a smokey eye or eyeliner too much for the heat? I don’t even know what to do with my face because I feel like it all melts off or smudges, or I may look overdone. Can you share some tips/do’s and dont’s for summer makeup, and an appropriate summer smokey eye?

Thank you so much!

xoxo,
Lauren

summer+meltproof+makeup+bronze+smokey+eye Makeup Mondays With Mario: Summer Smokey Eye and Meltproof MakeupLauren,
Smokey, sultry eyes are great for summer! If you’re having issues with your makeup melting or smudging in the summer heat, try using less products that contain oils – such as eyeliner. Smoke up your eyes using shadows. I love a shimmery copper or bronze on the top lids and smudged along the bottom lashes. A couple coats of mascara will finish the eye. Remember that for a smudge-free, long lasting eye makeup, prime your lids with concealer or foundation first, then set with a bit of loose powder. This trick also allows for flawless blending. Don’t cover your whole face with makeup in the summer months. Instead, try to even out your skin tone with a sheer tinted moisturizer and if needed, follow with a concealer on blemishes. Lip stains are great in hot weather too! Apply once to lips and you literally don’t have to worry about retouching all day.

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Mascara Application

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hey Mario,

My beauty question is about mascara. What is the best way to apply it? I’ve heard so many different tips. Some people have told me to apply mascara to the tops of lashes, while others have said to apply to the underside. I’ve heard about wiggling the wand at the base of lashes and rotating the wand as you apply. Some people hold the wand vertically and others hold it horizontally. And are you supposed to let mascara dry in between coats? Mario, you are a makeup genius so I really trust your opinion. Please set the record straight so I can make the most of my mascara.

Thanks!
Heidi

applying+mascara Makeup Mondays With Mario: Mascara Application

Thank you, Heidi!

The first thing you should do is curl your lashes and wipe the mascara wand with a tissue before applying mascara to the eye lashes. This gets any clumps off of the brush and makes for a more even application. I recommend applying the wand starting at the base of the lashes and going up. You can “wiggle it just alittle bit.” Too much of that will tangle the hairs. You want to have the majority of the mascara towards the base because the lashes will fall or droop if a lot of product weighs them down on the tips. Don’t wait until they dry to apply your second coat – perfect and seperate them before they dry.

Hi Mario,

I don’t have a lot of time in the morning to put on makeup, but I hate leaving the house bare-faced. Can you give me some quick tips or products I can use to look fab in five minutes?

PS – You’re awesome!

Lily

Lily,

To look fab in five minutes is very possible! You need concealer, bronzer, mascara and a lip product. Start with dabbing concealer under your eyes or wherever it’s needed to even out your skin. You can also apply a tinted moisturizer; they are usually very sheer, allowing for quick application and blending. I love Lancome SPF tinted moisturizer. Using a big brush, sweep bronzer around the frame of your face and a bit on cheeks to warm you up. Try Guerlain’s Terra Cotta Tan Booster. It’s a great rich color that goes on sheer and doesn’t have much shimmer in it. Take a small brush and sweep some on your eyelids too. Mascara on the top and bottom lashes will finish the eyes and – then throw on some lipstick or gloss to finish. You should be looking fab in no time.

Hi Mario!

I just have to say I love love love your work, it’s so flawless and beautiful! My problem is I am a latina with fair skin and I recently started bed tanning a bit, I really don’t want to overdue it because of the damaging effect it has in the long run. So my question is what kind of self tanner can I use for my face and body? I’ve also seen some for daily use. What would you recommend?

Thank you very much!
-Ilsse

self+tan Makeup Mondays With Mario: Beautiful and Bronzed

Ilsse,

The first thing you should do is stop tanning! There is nothing that will heal or correct the negative effects that tanning has on your skin. You may not see the damage today, but it will appear later in life. I am, however, a fan of self tanners and use them myself. Try L’oreal Paris Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist. It’s very easy to use yourself, comes out evenly and does not smell bad. If you prefer a creme or lotion, try the St.Tropez tanning line which has unique products to help you look tan and healthy. Whichever products you choose to use, you should always exfolliate you skin prior to application, avoid too much product on the elbows, feet, knees and any area that tends to get blotchy. Also keep your toenails and fingernails covered in Vaseline when appyling self tanner, as they will stain the nails an unnatractive yellow shade of yellow. Moisturize with a non-oily moisturizer to preserve the color longer. It’s alot of work keeping your face and body beautiful and bronzed but it’s worth it.
