Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week: L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara

Lately, I’d sworn off wearing mascara during the work week. You see, around 3:00pm, when my Cosi sandwich-induced stupor sets in, I absentmindedly rub my eyes…then scold myself and mutter expletives under my breath, upon realizing that I have just turned my doe eyes into racoon eyes.

But since being introduced to L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara (say that five times fast), I’ve ended my self-imposed, work week mascara strike. Double Extend Beauty Tubes mimics the look of lash extensions by combining a nourishing base coat with tube technology, once only found in prestige mascaras (Blinc and Fiberwig).

For half the price of the aforementioned mascaras, you get lush, lengthened lashes that won’t clump, run, smudge or flake. In fact, the other day, I accidentally fell asleep with my mascara still on (truth: went to bed without washing my face cuz I’m lazy) and when I awoke, my mascara looked ab fab and the color hadn’t migrated one bit.

I’m a gal who’s always running late, so I was initially skeptical about whether or not this 2-step mascara would fit into my free time-deptived lifestyle. So I was very happy to find that while Double Extend Beauty Tubes does involve an additional process, the extra time is minimal…the ‘Nourishing Base Coat’ doesn’t need to dry before you paint on the ‘Ultra Lengthening Tupe Top Coat.’
And here’s the best part…when it comes time to remove the mascara, all you need is warm water. No heavy duty makeup remover or elbow grease required. When washing your face (do as I say, not as I do), simply smooth the tubes away from your lashes with your fingertips, or hold a cotton pad soaked in warm water on the lashes for 30 seconds…the tubes will come off without leaving the surrounding area an inky mess.

The only downside to this mascara (and it’s a very nitpicky one) is the name. Because L’Oreal’s decided against giving this new mascara a totally unique moniker, it could be confused with L’Oreal’s Double Extend Lash Extender & Magnifier Mascara, which features the primer…but not the tube technology. So if you decide to give Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara a try, look for the red and white packaging.

Get ready for the big O – Lancome Oscillation

Get ready for the big Ô! Ôscillation, Lancôme’s vibrating power mascara, launches nationwide today, Wednesday, October 22nd.

The mascara provides a 360-degree coat around each and every lash, and the brush vibrates at no fewer than 7,000 vibrations per minute for “perfect formula application” that extends, curls, shapes and thickens lashes. The wand is battery-powered and turns on a 3-centimeter motor.

This is one of the most anticipated mascaras ever and for a good reason.

The key to great results with Ôscillation is a certain application technique:
* Apply in slow, straight and steady strokes.
* Don’t zig-zag and don’t wiggle!
* Don’t overpump the wand. There’s plenty of product on there for multiple coats.
* If at first you don’t succeed…don’t give up! Ôscillation takes a few tries to get the hang of it.
* Ôscillation is great for the lower lashes, so don’t forget to apply there.

Once you get your application method down, there are a few tricks you can try:
* Apply and then go back and re-apply to the tips alone. You can get amazing length.
* Put the wand right at the base of the lashes, activate the vibrating action and hold in place for a few seconds. Then slowly sweep to the tips of the lashes. It gives you beautiful thickness at the base and lots of oomph.

Ôscillation is available at all Lancôme counters and boutiques and

Big Props To Rimmel London

Big props to Rimmel London for creating two ab fab mascaras for under $8, and to my BFF Kristen for bringing this brand into my lifestyle.

A few weeks ago, Kristen called me to wax poetic about the fluttertastic virtues of Glam’Eyes Mascara. Like she promised, it delivered high octane lashes like you wouldn’t believe. This mascara ain’t for the faint of heart, and you wallflowers best save this tube for a night out. It gives the eye a sexy, dramatic look that is sure to set tongues wagging.

But I was most impressed by my impulse buy. CVS was offering a buy one, get one half off promotion…so I also tossed Lash Maxxx Mascara into my basket. This mascara magically multiplies my sparse lashes and gives them a glossy black coat, with zero clumps. The wand takes a little getting used to, as it applies the product with a comb comprised of ultra-fine bristles. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll marvel at how believably lush your lashes look. The fringe is so natural, you’ll forget that you aren’t genetically blessed.

Run your ass out and buy both of these mascaras – for the price of one department store tube!

Warm and Fuzzy Eyeshadow: Lise Watier Cachemires Bleu Quartet

How many of you own an eye shadow quad with no clue about where and how to apply the colors? I can relate…I’m a beauty junkie, not a makeup artist. Which is why I am such a big fan of Lise Watier’s eye shadow palettes. Included with the kits are directions on how to achieve different looks, complete with color-coded diagrams.

This summer, I was all about the Eye Quartet in Mer. And now that the lazy days of summer have come to an end, I’m feeling kinda blue. In a good way.

For fall, Lise Watier presents two seasonal colour quartets in soft, soothing shades – my favorite being Cachemires Bleu. This palette of (composed of a grey taupe, a sky blue, an anthracite blue and a luminous pale pink) is both subtle and refined, allowing infinite mix-and match possibilities. And it comes nestled in a pretty knitted pouch, accented with sequins!

To create the look above, I used products from Lise Watier’s new collection, Les Cachemires:
