When it comes to my skin care routine, I use a variety of products. I’m attracted to what smells good, feels good and what works for me. Then again who isn’t? After many years of experimenting, I finally have figured out a great combination for me. That bold statement was verified yesterday when I received a HUGE compliment (at least to me it was huge).
I saw my esthetician yesterday for an eyebrow clean up. I always dread laying down under that bright light where she can clearly see all of my flaws. I was getting ready to defend my pores, just like how I have to defend my flossing habits to my dentist, when she said, “You are doing a great job keeping your skin hydrated. Your face is one of the best that I have seen all day.” “What, really?! Thanks!” was my response.
We all know the importance of keeping our skin cleansed and hydrated…so I won’t bore you with all of that, instead this is what I do everyday: (more…)
I’m home on maternity leave, so I spend an inordinate amount of time nursing my daughter, burping her and changing her diapers – all the while, watching hours of QVC. I don’t know what it is, but I am mesmerized by QVC demonstrations. If I’m channel surfing and I happen to land on QVC, it’s damn near impossible for me to change the station.
Anyway, a few weeks ago, I caught a demonstration from a beauty brand I’d never heard of: Tatcha. Victoria Tsai, the brand’s creator, was talking about the inspiration behind the brand (ancient Geisha skincare traditions) and demonstrating some skincare products – and she had my undivided attention. And I’m not easily impressed. I was this close to ordering, but I’m sleep-deprived and ended up passing out before I got a chance to order. The next week, I was so preoccupied that I forgot about Tatcha – until they sent me an email. They offered to send me some products to sample. And after using them for the past few weeks, I am ADDICTED. No…seriously. I now have a legitimate Tatcha habit. (more…)
Every month, my girlfriends from college and I get together for dinner in the Philadelphia area. We started this tradition about two years ago, and – of course – we have a great time catching up and reminiscing! Most of them are product-obsessed (like me), and most have been through some sort of make-up introductory when we became “of age” to wear it. Now that we are in our 30s, I thought it was a great time to learn more about skincare (ugh, the dreaded lines and wrinkles) and how to apply make up that works for us now.
I instantly thought of my friend, Claire Sloss, who works for Laura Mercier at Nordstrom in the King of Prussia Mall. They offer a Master Makeup Class, free of charge. There is a maximum of 15 people – we found that 12 was a great number, as there are Laura Mercier artists working with a couple of girls at one time to see what best works for them. Claire just requires a few weeks to plan the logistics – and offered with the class are refreshments and the products that you would like to purchase. The class is done in a private room so you can spread out, ask a lot of questions and have fun!
We had a fabulous time! Luis Soto was our lead artist that evening, and he selected me to be his model! I admit, I was awe-struck because he has worked with many celebrities including Cher, Cindy Lauper, and N’Sync! “What, you touched Justin Timberlake’s face?!?” Yeah, the 15-year-old in me came out!!!
MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance ($40), specially formulated for oily and combination skin, delivers weightless hydration for a radiant, healthy look. The silky gel emulsion acts as a primer, improving the appearance of foundation and powder. Now available in Radiant Pink, suited for fair skin tones, the translucent formula smoothes on easily, featuring illuminating pearl powders that transform dullness into a healthy, natural glow.
“Wear sunscreen! I promise, you’ll thank me when you’re old!”
My mother, forever subtle, has been pushing sunscreen on me for as long as I can remember. Once I could drive, any time not spent working over the summer was spent at the beach, getting seriously bronze. Like most people, I prefer how I look with a little bit of a tan, and my sun protection usually had single-digit numbers. Fast-forward to my city life, where the majority of my time is spent indoors, and all of my foundations tend to have names like ivory and buff. I wear SPF 15 every single day to prevent skin damage – on my face, neck, and the back of my hands. I’ve been a faithful customer of Olay for years. They make a great all around moisturizer for sensitive skin, and I practically buy it in bulk.
As a beauty expert, women always ask me for tips on long-lasting, fresh-looking, flawless makeup. And my answer is always the same: make time to prime. It doesn’t matter whether you have 50 minutes or 5 minutes to apply your makeup – you should always take the time to prep your canvas to achieve the best result possible. You wouldn’t apply a saturated, matte lipstick to dry and cracking lips – would you? And you wouldn’t dream of wearing that bodycon dress without slipping into some Spanx, right? The same theory applies to your face.
Now that you understand the importance of prime time—as I like to call it—it’s equally important to find the right priming products for you. Primers aren’t just the product you put on your face before foundation. In fact, my favorite primers are actual skincare products that have priming benefits. As a mom and a businesswoman, I have very little time to mess around – so I appreciate priming products that do double duty, like two of my new favorites from Olay Regenerist. (more…)
Late last year, my friends started to remark about how fabulous my skin looked. I quickly dismissed the first few compliments, thinking my pals were just being kind. But the flattery just kept coming and I started to wonder what all the fuss was about. Then one morning, I looked in the mirror and finally saw what everyone else was seeing. The dark marks around my jawline that have plagued me for years were almost gone – and my complexion was positively radiant. That’s when it all clicked…and my new moisturizer instantly achieved holy grail status.
DDF Discoloration Reversal Moisturizer promises to “effectively hydrate skin during the nighttime sleep cycle to help reduce the appearance of melanin build up, and help to achieve younger looking skin.” And boy does it ever. I’ve struggled with hyperpigmentation since puberty and have tested a ridiculous amount of products to minimize my the dark marks that acne and other blemishes have left in their wake. I’ve had good results with a handful of those products, but nothing comes close to the transformation I’ve witnessed with DDF Discoloration Reversal Moisturizer.
Not only did it practically obliterate my dark marks, it evened out my entire skin tone and imparted a glow that – up until now – I’ve only been able to achieve with makeup. What a welcome surprise! And the funny thing is that even though you’re supposed to use it twice a day, I only use it in the morning (I didn’t read the directions when DDF first sent me a bottle to review) and my friends noticed an improvement in my skin after just two weeks of using the product. Just imagine how quick you could see results if you actually use as directed! (more…)
In the winter of 2011, I was introduced to Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream – and whatever moisturizer I was using at the time went by the wayside. I honestly don’t remember which moisturizer came before (and who cares, really) but I do remember that it couldn’t compete with the Rosa Arctica results. After using it for not that long, I noticed a significant improvement in my skin. During the colder months, my skin is Sahara dry and there are only a few moisturizers on the market hydrating enough to quench its thirst; Rosa Arctic is one of them. But it gets better; the thick cream also smoothes, reduces lines and wrinkles, improves firmness and gives it a youthful glow.
Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream is so fabulous that it pains me when I retire it for the spring and summer months, when my face turns into an oil slick of BP proportions. As it turns out, I wasn’t the only one wishing for a lighter version of this must-have moisturizer. In response to customer demand for a lightweight texture, Kiehl’s just launched Rosa Arctica Lightweight Cream.
Kiehl’s, knowing how much I adore the original, sent me a sneak peek of the new formulation and I have been using it faithfully for a few weeks. I love it as much as the original and I’m so thrilled that I can now use Rosa Arctica year-round. (more…)
Hyperpigmentation is the beauty bane of my existence. Every time I get a pimple, it leaves a dark mark in its wake – whether or not I pick at it. Luckily, I don’t get too many blemishes or else Cruella de Ville might want to make a coat out of me. But even one dark mark is a cause for concern and embarrassment – not to mention they can take months to lighten up.
One mark has taken up residence on my jawline for the past six months. It’s been there for so long, sometimes I just forget about it. That is until I see a photo of myself and cringe at how dark and mole-like it appears. So when a bottle of Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution showed up on my doorstep to review, I was very hopeful. Kiehl’s is one of my favorite skincare brands and their products have yet to disappoint, so I was very hopeful about this new innovation. (more…)

Help me, Mario. I have super dry skin and no matter what I do or how much moisturizer I use, my skin always looks flaky when I wear foundation. What am I doing wrong? If anyone can help me, I know it’s you!
Flaky skin can be a result of a skin condition such as eczema. If you haven’t already done so, please have your skin checked by a dermatologist to determine what the problem is – if any – and the appropriate treatment you may need.
I find that with very dry skin, it’s good to use a tinted moisturizer. Stay away from setting powders which will absorb all the skin’s moisture and bring attention to flaky, dry areas.
Another option is to use Bare Minerals mineral powder foundation – it works beautifully on dry, flaky skin and even gives a glow!
