During New York Fashion Week, I visited the Creative Nail Design Studio to chat with the top nail pros about the nails they have created, in collaboration with the participating designers. CND nail technician Shelena Robinson was hard at work, crafting 40 sets of talons for the Baby Phat show. She meticulously layered Gold Chrome (to be released in Fall 2009) over Iced Capuccino. She told me that layering is one of the trends that CND is seeing for fall; it gives the nail a unique look, and is something women can easily do at home.
When I asked how long it takes to complete 40 sets of nails – like at Baby Phat – nail technician Kristina Baune explained that it takes 6-7 hours, especially with layered nail polish because the first color must completely dry before applying the second color. Otherwise, you run the risk of dragging and/or smearing.
Kristina said that the main nail color trend she predicts for fall is gray undertones. “Colors will be dirty and smoky, whether they be beige, pastels or reds. Gray isn’t as hard to wear as black. It wears a little bit softer so it’s not as dramatic when it gets all chipped up. It’s great for every day. It’s a great staple.”
I concluded the interview by putting both technicians on the spot – asking them to name their favorite CND nail colors. Without really hesitating, Shelena put High Blue Dark, NFS and Decadence
at the top of her list. Kristina’s favorites include Blue Blood (discontinued), Hyde in the Dark and Red Baroness
Last Fashion Week, the New York Times published The Unsung Heroes of Fashion Week
, a fascinating slideshow that chronicles the work of CND artists. With a voiceover by Natasha Singer, the video captures the painstaking process these talented technicians underake to accessorize the nails at Fashion Week’s hottest shows. If you’re a nail phile, you really must take a look!

Just in time for Valentine’s Day…
Love is in full bloom! Embark on a love affair this spring with China Glaze Romantique, a stunning new collection of love-inspired shades. Featuring twelve, chrome finished hues, the Romantique collection brings you love in color with sweet nail lacquers in an assortment of harmonious shades for spring. The Romantique collection includes:
Admire – Lilac Shimmer
Adore – Turquoise Pearl
Awaken – Platinum Silver
Cherish – Shimmering Sea Green
Devotion – Metallic Lavender
Harmony – Brilliant Violet
Emotion – Berry Pink
Delight – Bubblegum Pink
Joy – Mauve Shimmer
Magical – Metallic Bronze
Passion – Gilded Gold
Poetic – Coral with Gold Flecks
I don’t know about you, but I think it’s so refreshing that China Glaze decided against the clichéd Valentine’s Day color palette. If I see one more brand pushing red and pink foil hearts floating in a bottle of clear lacquer, I’m going to scream.
As the name implies, these shades are romantic and whimsical, but the chrometastic finish gives them edge. The formula is pigment-rich, so you really only need one coat; however, metallics tend to highlight every ridge in the nail, so you would be smart to buff and/or apply a base coat, pre-polish.
My current faves are Magical and Joy. Speaking of Joy, I’d better keep this one away from Mama Spoiled Pretty (also named Joy) before she starts begging. Mom loves a purple polish, and she somehow manages to relieve me of almost every plum, grape and eggplanty shade that comes into my possession. But she did “bring me into this world” and “never let me want for anything” – so I suppose I could share.
While we’re on the topic of sharing…I’m pleased to announce that this week, Spoiled Pretty is teaming up with China Glaze for a romantical giveaway. Two sets of Romantique are up for grabs!!!
To enter, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Be sure to include your full name and mailing address. The contest ends at midnight (EST) on Sunday, February 1st. Two winners will be chosen at random from among the entrants. On Monday, February 2nd, I’ll announce the winners’ names. Please, only one entry per person; duplicate entries will not increase your chances of winning. Contest is open to U.S. residents only.
They’re not yet on the brand website, but Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens have been popping up in random Walgreens stores and generating quite a buzz. Available in 8 colors (white, black, light pink, hot pink, blue, red, silver and gold), these markers are $7.99 each and make nail art a breeze, thanks to the water-based formula.
Embrace your inner polish Picasso and doodle all over your manicure. Mistakes can be easily corrected with a moist Q-tip and some patience. But because the formula is water-based, you must seal your manicure masterpiece with a top coat – or all of your hard work will have been for naught.
So keep your eyes peeled next time you’re at the drugstore or supermarket. And if you live/work near a Walgreens, by all means start your sleuthing there. I’m hoping to get my hands on these stylos, so expect a formal review soon!
For years, I have been blaming Mr. Spoiled Pretty for my raggedy looking nails. I’m too scatterbrained and busy to schedule regular manicures. And whenever I pull out the polish stockpile, Graham makes this face that translates to, “If you care about my brain cells, you’ll put away the polish.”
Most times Graham makes this face, I begrudgingly return the polishes to their hideaway beneath the bathroom sink…not because I’m really concerned about his brain cells (he’s really smart, so he has some to spare). Really, it’s so that I don’t have to hear him yammer on about the caustic smell of the fumes – and how women do such ridiculous things in the name of beauty.
Well, I’m tickled (perfect) pink to report that Sula Beauty has answered my nail polish prayers.
Sula’s collection of non-toxic Nail Colours don’t smell like traditional polishes. In fact, they don’t really smell like anything at all – unless you place the bottle under your nose and take a whiff. And even then, the scent is barely noticeable. Another treat – the polishes are specially designed to be worn with whimsy. The water-based formula can be peeled off in one clean sweep – no harsh polish remover required; which means no funny faces or lip from Mr. Spoiled Pretty when it comes time to take it off. For longer wear, simply apply a protective clear top and base coat.
Sula Nail Colour is available in Perfect Pink, Crimson Red, Champagne Coral and Modern Mauve.
I’m crossing my manicured fingers that Sula adds more colors to the collection.
As I reported back in July
debuted a limited-edition nail polish collection inspired by Beverly Hills spoiled brats…just not the ones I/we were expecting.
90210 by OPI is comprised of these three shades:
Queen of West Web-erly: purple shimmer
Sweet as Annie-thing! – orange red
Pretty & Privileged – ruby red
Um, OPI – where in the ham sandwich are my Brenda, Kelly and Donna-inspired colors? I realize that this is just a marketing vehicle for the new series, but how badass would it have been to see the above shades to go head-to-head with polishes inspired by the true queens of West Beverly High? How about an inky color to match Dylan’s Porsche 356 Speedster? And how simple would it have been to whip up a silvery shade inspired by David? Ugh…this collection had so much promise.
Anybody actually watch this new 90210? Me neither.
Congrats to Erica Bogese, the winner of Spoiled Pretty’s Lancôme Le Vernis Giveaway. Erica will win a full sized bottle of Le Vernis – Divine Lasting Color & Shine in Midnight Glam, from their 2008 holiday color collection, C’est Magnifique.
Thanks to everyone who entered. And special thanks to Lancôme for sponsoring such a wonderful contest for Spoiled Pretty readers. Merci beaucoup, Lancôme!
And while we’re on the topic of giveaways, don’t forget to enter the Krina giveaway – for your chance to win the Calista handbag (a favorite of celebs like Reese Witherspoon and Katherine Heigl)!
