Daneen’s Darker Do – Courtesy of Celeb Colorist, Jason Backe!

Daneen’s Darker Do Courtesy of Celeb Colorist, Jason Backe!

Last night, I spent the evening with Jason Backe, Clairol Color Director. While watching the Grammy arrivals and discussing hair color trends, he convinced me to go darker. Jason has worked with celebrities such as Anne Hathaway, Renée Zellweger, Amerie, Idina Menzel, and Lake Bell – so I knew I was in capable (and very talented) hands.

Jason colored my hair using Nice ‘n Easy Perfect 10 (in 5A – Medium Ash Brown). In just 10 minutes, my hair was a rich chocolate brown and it actually felt healthier than it did before I colored it. Then Jason blow dried it and gave me the cutest Farrah Fawcett flip, using a large barrel curling iron.

Daneen’s Darker Do Courtesy of Celeb Colorist, Jason Backe!I absolutely love it. I can’t stop stealing glimpses of my darker do in the mirror. And I keep running my fingers through my hair because I can’t get over how soft and bouncy it is. It’s to dye for!

And check out how shiny it is (see left)…and that’s with no product in it!

If you’re in the Philadelphia area, be sure to catch Jason Backe on today’s eppy of The 10! Show on NBC.

Stay tuned for Spoiled Pretty’s exclusive interview with Jason!

The Skin Diva Catches The Attention of The Philadelphia Inquirer

phila+inquirer+spa+photo The Skin Diva Catches The Attention of The Philadelphia Inquirer

Remember last week when I told you about Linda Harding’s Hit The Ground Running esthetician’s workshop? Well, the Philadelphia Inquirer got wind of her genius idea and featured her in yesterday’s newspaper.

Linda emailed me with the link, and here’s the hilarious thing…my beauty obsessed aunt (who introduced me to the Schick Intuition razor and who recently treated me to a “day of wellness” at Terme Di Aroma spa) is quoted in the article.

Small world, right?

Philadelphia Estheticians: The Skin Diva Wants To School You!

linda+harding Philadelphia Estheticians: The Skin Diva Wants To School You!Philadelphia esthetician Linda Harding has turned teacher. After 14 years in the business, Linda is shifting gears. Her new Hit The Ground Running Esthetician’s Workshop was created to give novice and nervous estheticians a competitive edge in the spa industry.

Linda spoke with the owners and manager of the top six Philadelphia-area spas, and asked them to list the qualities that are most desirable in an esthetician seeking employment. The answers she heard most frequently were: passion, dedication, clear skin, excellent customer service abilities, and professional demeanor.

To help a new generation of estheticians properly prepare to enter the job market, Linda created Hit The Ground Running, a worshop divided into two modules. The first session teaches students about different spa environments, which personality types are compatible with those environments, how to articulately answer interview questions, and sales.

estheticians Philadelphia Estheticians: The Skin Diva Wants To School You!The second half of the workshop is a hands-on module in facial and waxing techniques. Linda also trains students on advanced machinery, such as light therapy and microdermabrasion.

“Most esthetic schools provide you with an excellent theoretical foundation, however they don’t really prepare you for the spa industry and they don’t tell you what to do to get hired,” says Linda. “The bottom line is that you touch people for a living: emotionally and physically. If you don’t know how, you will not keep clients and as the word spreads, you will not get clients. Right now, the industry is in a lull – like most businesses in the country. However, estheticians who are good continue to work steadily. This lull in the market allows beginners to sharpen their skills and make themselves more competitive and marketable. The lull is a good thing. It makes the playing ground more even. After completing this workshop, participants will feel confident and secure enough to get the job they most desire.”

The cost for this one-day workshop (approximately 8 hours) is $350; included in this cost is a separate 60 minute, one-on-one consultation with Linda; during this private session, students can seek extra counseling or training on their weakest areas.

Mention Spoiled Pretty when you sign up for Hit The Ground Running and you will enjoy a 20% discount.

For more information and to enroll in the workshop, call Linda at 215.796.3520 or click here to send a message to her inbox.

Freeze 24-7 PlumpLips – $9.99 at Marshalls

plumplips Freeze 24 7 PlumpLips $9.99 at Marshalls
You could spend $42 for a .28 oz tube of Freeze 24-7 PlumpLips gloss here. Or you could spend $9.99 at your local Marshalls. Yesterday, while shopping the Willow Grove, PA Marshalls with Mama Spoiled Pretty, I spotted a basket full of PlumpLips near register #1.

About a year ago when I reviewed PlumpLips, my sister also fell in love with the lip plumper; but $42 was a little too rich for a college student’s budget. So, being the best big sis a girl could ever wish for, I tossed a tube into my mom’s cart and told her that Lauren would be forever grateful.

Today, Lauren called me to gush about her new gloss…marveling that A) I remembered how hard she tried to find it, on the cheap, circa 2007…and B) that I even recalled which shade she had been searching for (FirstFrost).

I’m good.

Product Polygamy Week: Skincare

product+polygamy+week Product Polygamy Week: SkincareIt’s day two of Product Polygamy Week, and today’s topic is skincare. Late to the par-tay and not sure what I’m talking about? No biggie. Click here to check out yesterday’s installment, then come back to read about the big love I’m spreading around today…

FACIAL CLEANSER
The Barb: T’Fivve Moisturizing Facial Cleansing Foam
tfivve foam Product Polygamy Week: SkincareLet’s just put it this way – when it comes to facial cleansers, I haven’t found anything closer to perfection than T’Fivve Moisturizing Facial Cleansing Foam. My skin behaves best when I’m using this product, and I find that I don’t need to use as many skincare treatments when this cleanser is in my rotation. I used up my bottle of T’Fivve Moisturizing Facial Cleansing Foam a little while ago, and my skin has been acting out ever since. Buying another bottle is #1 priority on my beauty to-do list. It’s just that fabulous.

The Nicki:
Philosophy Purity Made Simple High-Foaming Daily Cleanser
At the end of the night, it’s in your skin’s best interest to take off your face. But just the thought of scrubbing off my budge-proof eye makeup then washing my face makes me tired. Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple High-Foaming Daily Cleanser is for lazy ladies like me. In 60 seconds, it melts away all traces of makeup, dirt, oil and debris. One caveat, though – this cleanser is better suited to oily, combination and normal skin types.

The Margene:
Chanel Mousse Douceur Rinse-Off Foaming Mousse Cleanser
Chanel Mousse Douceur Rinse-Off Foaming Mousse Cleanser is formulated to balance skin with the de-pollution power of Tulip Tree Extract and the emollient properties of Mallow Extract. If your skin could talk, it would say “aaaaahhhhhhh” after you’ve cleansed with it. It’s Chanel, so it’s luxe – which means that every time you wash your mug, you feel like you’re pampering yourself. The delightfully fresh fragrance is an added bonus.

FACIAL MOISTURIZER
The Barb: Atopalm MLE Cream
atopalm+mle+cream Product Polygamy Week: SkincareAtopalm’s MLE Cream is the best moisturizer for dehydrated skin. Hands down. Every year when the weather turns cold, my skin gets very thirsty – and Atopalm is its favorite drink. I could go on and on listing the product’s virtues, but we’d both be here all day. Just do this: read my original review and then go buy Atopalm MLE Cream. You won’t be disappointed.

The Nicki: L’Oreal Skin Genesis Oil Free Lotion
If you’re Goldilocks looking for a middle of the road moisturizer – not too thick, no too thin – you’d be smart to pick up L’Oreal Skin Genesis Oil Free Lotion. It’s an overachiever because (besides moisturizing) it promotes collagen production, boosts cell renewal, improves tone and leaves skin luminescent. The only drawback is that this gem of a product doesn’t contain SPF.

The Margene: Clinique Comfort On Call Allergy Tested Relief Cream
If you suffer from dry, sensitive and/or reactive skins, Clinique’s Comfort On Call Allergy Tested Relief Cream is dream. I could say more, but the name really sums it up – and it does live up to its title.

SKINCARE TREATMENT
The Barb: Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant
If you’ve been reading Spoiled Pretty for a hot second, you know that I am an exfoliating enthusiast. Scrubbing away my dead skin cells is my favorite beauty pastime. But when it comes to exfoliation, you can’t get overzealous; you’ll scrub your face right off. Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant lets me indulge my compulsion, but is gentle enough that it can be used on the regular.

The Nicki: Givenchy Le Soin Noir
le+soin+noir Product Polygamy Week: SkincareGivenchy Le Soin Noir is so cool, I don’t know where to begin. First of all, this skin cream is black. Yes…black, on account of the Black Algae Sap Concentrate – used for the first time in a cosmetic product. Le Soin Noir hydrates and leaves your complexion firm, glowing, and even-toned. The downside? 1.7 ounces of this black magic costs $360.

The Margene: Yonka Paris Gommage
A recent trip to Terme Di Aroma, an amazing holistic day spa in Philadelphia, introduced me to my new favorite skincare treatment. With Yonka Paris Gommage, you can get that post-facial glow at home. And it’s so easy. Just apply to your face after cleansing, leave on for 5 to 7 minutes, then peel it off to reveal drop dead skin. This product exfoliates, hydrates, tones, brightens and refines enlarged pores. And get this – it’s so gentle, you can even use this on the eyelids. I don’t know why you would want to, but you can if you want. Don’t you just love a product that let’s a playa play? Ooh…one more thing. It’s a nighttime firming hydrating mask; apply before bedtime and sleep in it. It’s so light and the citrus scent is so pleasant that you’ll forget it’s even on as you start to count sheep. Beauty sleep, indeed.

A Cheeky Makeup Trick, Plus My New Favorite Product!

incandescent+cheekbones+2 A Cheeky Makeup Trick, Plus My New Favorite Product!
For what seems like forever, I have been seriously coveting the incandescent cheekbones I’ve seen on every model, actress, songbird, and reality star looking to extend her 15 minutes. And until recently, I came up with nothing.

incandescent+cheekbones A Cheeky Makeup Trick, Plus My New Favorite Product!Product after product promised me unimaginable radiance. Unfortunately, nothing panned out. In fact, the majority of these lying highlighters left my tan skin looking either disco glittery or matte and ashy – both, the antithesis of what I was going for.

But I didn’t give up hope. After a long and fruitless pursuit, I took a trip to where I should have gone in the first place. MAC, where makeup dreams come true.

At the MAC counter in the King of Prussia Nordie’s, I met a makeup artist named Dylan who happened to be wearing the most ridiculously wicked eyeliner EVER – and I just knew that she would be the one to lead me to the chiseled cheekbone promised land. Despite my lame attempt to describe what I was trying to achieve, Dylan knew exactly what I was saying and what I needed to replicate the look.

mac+cream+colour+base+in+hush A Cheeky Makeup Trick, Plus My New Favorite Product! She led me over to MAC’s Cream Colour Base display and picked up Hush, a soft pale peach with icy shimmer that I would have never touched. With the 252 Large Shader Brush, she dabbed the slightest bit of the Cream Colour Base on the top of my cheekbone – extending the line up to my temple – then buffed it into the skin, for a seamless appearance. Next, she blended in a bit more product…this time, from my temple up onto my brow bone. “Creating this sideways V gives the face a lifted look,” Dylan said.

Just in case you were wondering, this technique is super simple to master. The next night, I met up with my BFF Kristen, who marveled at my new-and-improved bone structure. I swear, ladies – just the slightest hint of Hush (in strategic places) gives you this lit-from-within glow.

Merci, MAC and Dylan…for coming up big where all of the other brands fell short. And for inspiring this cheeky post. Mwah!

Happy Halloween!

halloween Happy Halloween!
It’s all tricks and treats in Philadelphia today. Not a lot of orange in my hometown this Halloween. Rather, a sea of red…

parade1 Happy Halloween! The treat: upwards of three million Phillies fans have descended on Center City Philadelphia, as The Parade of Champions makes its way down Market and Broad Streets. The last time a Philadelphia team won a major sports championship was in 1983, when the 76ers won the NBA title. The Phillies won their only other World Series in 1980.

The trick: navigating the crowds and getting my short ass home, where I could actually catch some of the parade action on television.

Happy Halloween, y’all!

Handbag Adoption

When it comes to handbags, I’m like Angelina Jolie. I just want to adopt ’til I drop.

The other day on my lunch break, something compelled me to stop into Leehe Fai, a chic clothing boutique in the Rittenhouse neighborhood of Philadelphia. As I was just browsing, I caught a glimpse of Botkier’s Morgan Satchel and momentarily lost my breath.

botkier+morgan Handbag Adoption

It’s as if Botkier read my thoughts and crafted the bag of my dreams. Unfortunately, it’s a little out of my price range right now. So I’ll keep dreaming…dreaming up get-rich-quick schemes so Morgan and I can be reunited.

It’s times like these that a fairy godmother would come in handy.
