If You Have Hair, The Wet Brush is a Must Have

For years, I have used an oversized wide-tooth comb to detangle my notoriously impossible to detangle post-shampoo hair. The amount of hair that would get caught in the teeth was somewhat alarming. But I chalked it up to the fact that I only wash my hair once a week - so maybe the hair loss really wasn't all that CONTINUE READING

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Cover April Issue of Vogue

Welp, folks, it looks like Kanye finally wore Anna Wintour down and got his baby mama a coveted Vogue cover. So the rumors were true. There was buzz a few months back that Kim would cover the fashion bible, but then everyone assumed it would be a foreign Vogue - given Anna's alleged aversion to all things Kardashian. MAC Master Class: The Most Fun I’ve Ever Had Putting On Makeup

Posted on by daneen in Beauty Tips, Event, Philadelphia | Leave a comment

mac+master+class+face+charts MAC Master Class: The Most Fun Ive Ever Had Putting On MakeupLast weekend, I had the pleasure of participating in a MAC Master Class at Bloomingdale’s in the Willow Grove Mall. In this interactive seminar, participants were taught how to replicate on-trend looks, using the products and techniques employed my MAC pro artists.

After 30+ beauty-obsessed ladies (and one hilarious dude) took our seats at work stations – which were equipped with mirrors, a set of brushes and a plethora of products – MAC pro artists Will and Jocelyn introduced themselves and we got down to biznass.

Will announced that he would be demonstrating the “club zone” look, complete with a peacock blue eye and Bordeaux gloss. Then Jocelyn informed us that she would be leading the “bridal/wedding” look tutorial. Will and Jocelyn explained that we should pick a preferred look – as they would be walking us through the steps, and demonstrating techniques on models. Since I had plans to meet Mr. Spoiled Pretty for a casual dinner later that evening (and I didn’t want to look like a tranny hooker at my neighborhood brasserie), I chose to follow Jocelyn’s lead.

During the two hour tutorial, a handful of MAC makeup artists walked around, assisting participants and helping us choose the most flattering makeup shades. One of the artists, Dana, was especially helpful and introduced me to some of my new MAC faves.

The Master Class only cost $50, which you end up getting back (in the form of a MAC gift card) at the end of the seminar. So basically, the class ends up being free…and you go home with a whole bunch of new goodies to help hone your mad makeup skills. Next time MAC organizes a Master Class is my neck of the woods, I’ll be there. Perhaps I’ll see you there too?

Here’s the abridged breakdown of the bridal look:

1) Spritz face with Fix +
2) Moisturize skin with Studio Moisture Fix.
3) Prep the skin with Prep + Prime Skin.
4) Fill in brows with Eye Shadow, using the 266 Small Angle Brush
5) Apply Paint Pot in Bare Study to eyelid, from lash line to brow bone, using the 242 Shader Brush.
6) Using the same brush, apply Eye Shadow in Shroom to entire lid.
7) Apply Eye Shadow in Cork to the crease, using the 217 Blending Brush**; start at the outer corner and work the product inward, moving the brush in small circles to deposit color.
8) Using the same brush, apply Eye Shadow in Embark to the crease; start at the outer corner and work the product inward, moving the brush in small circles to deposit color – but stop at the middle of the lid, so that the color is concentrated on the outer half of the eye.
9) With the 266 Small Angle Brush, apply Embark Eye Shadow to lower lash line.
10) Use the same brush to line the upper lash line with Fluidline in Blacktrack*.
11) Apply Select Moisturecover concealer to nose, under eyes and above brows – and blend into skin using the 190 Foundation Brush.
12) Mix small amount of Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation* with a few drops of Stobe Liquid* (for a dewy finish) and apply to parts of the face where you did not use concealer (forehead, cheeks, chin and jawline) using the 188 Small Duo Fibre Face Brush*.
13) Using the same brush, set fondation with Mineralize SPF 15 Foundation/Loose.
14) Choose a Powder Blush shade that is similar to your own complexion; I used Harmony. Use the 129 Powder/Blush Brush to contour under the cheekbones. To avoid a line that looks too harsh, imagine a line that runs from the middle of your ear to the corner of your mouth…then apply the blush half-way, from the ear to the middle of the cheek.
15) Using the same brush, apply Powder Blush (in a shade that gives a subtle pop of color) to the apples of cheeks; I used Cubic.
16) Apply Prep + Prime Lip to your lips.
17) Line lips in Spice Lip Pencil.
18) Apply Viva Glam V Lipstick, then top it off with Dazzleglass in Baby Sparks*.
19) Coat upper lashes in Dazzle Lash Mascara.
20) Choose a pair of false lashes* and measure them against your eyes. If they are too long, cut to desired length. Apply Duo Adhesive* and allow glue to get a little tacky before positioning lashes as close as you possibly can to natural lash line.

* must-haves for your makeup toolkit!
** if you’re on a tight beauty budget, just buy the 217 Blender Brush (a very wise investment).

Hey Philly Girls: Watch Me On The NBC 10! Show Tomorrow

the 10 show Hey Philly Girls: Watch Me On The NBC 10! Show TomorrowTomorrow morning, I’ll make my second appearance on the NBC 10! Show. In honor of Earth Day, I’ll be sharing my top five eco-friendly beauty finds.

I’m a lot less nervous than last time, but I caught a cold from my sister – so I’ve been nursing a sore throat today and willing myself to get better. Sheer will didn’t work, so I resorted to Tylenol Cold medicine, which has me feeling a bit loopy.

So cross your fingers for me, and pray that tomorrow’s segment doesn’t turn into a Vitameatavegamin type situation. Though that would be absolutely hilarious.

Watch what happens: NBC 10 at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21st.

Flat Out Fabulous

Banana+Republic+Whitney+Patent+Flat Flat Out Fabulous

How sick are these flats? Yesterday, my sister and I met up with Amber (home for the holidays) at the Willow Grove Mall – and we all fell in love with these Whitney Patent Flats at Banana Republic. They’re very Michelle Obama, no?

J+Crew+Metallic+mesh+flip flops Flat Out Fabulous

I’m also jonesing for these blinged-out J. Crew Metallic Mesh Flip-Flops. I’ve eyed them up during my last two trips to the store. Next time, I’m bringing them home with me.

Outsmart the Prepsters at J. Crew Outlet Store

jcrew+convertible+dress Outsmart the Prepsters at J. Crew Outlet StoreYesterday, I paid a little visit to my friend J. Crew. The purveyor of preppy has a store at the Philadelphia Premium Outlets – and I was absolutely shocked by the inventory. Many of the items in stock are still in J. Crew’s regular stores and on the website…but in the outlet store, the prices were so ridiculously low that I was pinching myself to make sure this wasn’t one of my ‘everything I want is on the clearance rack’ dreams.

Take this Convertible Swing Dress, for example. On jcrew.com, it’s listed as a new arrival and is priced at $78. But I picked it up today at the outlet store for less than half the price! The tag was marked $49.50, but it was my lucky day because all lounge dresses were an extra 30% off. So I scooped up the Swing Dress for just $34.65, which is an unbelievable steal because it’s actually three dresses in one!

I don’t typically buy summer dresses this early in the year; my head’s just not in the game yet. But then I thought about how scorching and sticky the summers can get in Philly – and how I complain, every year, that I wish I had more comfy sundresses. So I snatched this up, wishing they also stocked the dress in more colors. Unfort, they only had black.

My Latest MAC Acquisition: Plushglass in Fulfilled

My Latest MAC Acquisition: Plushglass in Fulfilled

When it comes to a MAC products, my sister and I are drawn to them like moths to a flame. So when we visited the Willow Grove Mall a few days ago with Mama Spoiled Pretty, it was no surprise that we couldn’t escape without a visit to the MAC counter at Bloomingdale’s. What was supposed to be swift stopover ended up being a half-hour spending spree.

While Lauren let the makeup artist paint her eyes in hues of blue, I made a beeline for the lip glosses – swatching at least a dozen on my inner arm. And my low-maintenance mom looked on in awe, wondering how she birthed such product-addicted daughters. When Lauren’s makeover was complete, she joined me in playing with the glosses. I asked for her opinion of MAC Plushglass in Fulfilled, which I was seriously considering adding to my collection. “It’s sick,” she exclaimed. So I decided to buy it…and so did she.

My Latest MAC Acquisition: Plushglass in FulfilledThough it’s described as ‘full-blush creamy pink,’ I think that cantaloupe-y cream pink would be more accurate. As you can see in the photo, it wears super sheer – and inflates the lips without the burning sting that accompanies many lip plumpers.

I love this formula and adore this shade. And while my lip gloss collection is incalculable, I definitely feel like a void has been filled by Fulfilled. It will be my go-to non-shimmery gloss when I’m playing up my eyes, but I still want a come-hither kisser.

daneen+baird+on+nbc+10+show Watch Me On The NBC 10! Show

Today, I appeared on the NBC 10! Show. You all know that I could fill the entire hour gabbing about beauty products…but, alas, I only had five minutes. At the top of the show, I shared some of my favorite money-saving tips, which include:

* Whenever you buy online, do a Google search for promotional/coupon codes and free shipping deals. You’d be surprised by how a few minutes of investigative work can save you a pretty penny.

* Sign up for a free rewards card at your favorite beauty retailers. With Sephora’s Beauty Insider Program, you accrue a point for every dollar you spend. When your ‘beauty bank’ hits 100 points, you can choose a deluxe sample. Plus, Sephora treats you to a deluxe beauty treat on your birthday. Stila Cosmetics just unveiled a similar program.

* Register your email with your favorite beauty brand or online retailers – to have news, coupons, and exclusive deals delivered to you inbox.

* My hairdresser is a longtime friend of the family, so we have a special arrangement. I bring in my own products and he gives me a discount. If you have a good relationship with your hairdresser, see if he/she would be amenable to a similar deal.

* Beauty schools offer salon services at discounted rates, so consider taking advantage of their menu of services.

A little later in the program, I returned with more tips and some fabulous budget beauty product recommendations!
