Do you travel to see family during the holidays? I do, and between shopping for all those gifts and attending festive parties, I barely have time to pack for my trip. Tarte takes the guesswork out of your holiday (or everyday) makeup palate with their Beauty without Boundaries Collection. All you need for your natural or sultry look is included in one stylish Missoni-esque makeup bag.
Because my hair is over-processed, dry and damaged, I only wash it about once a week. Which means that when I “do” it, I better do it right – or else my hair will look jacked for the next seven days. Forget a bad hair day; it’s more like a bad hair week for me. So when I’m offered the chance to review new hair product samples to review, I’m usually reluctant. But not this time, because it was Pantene doing the offering—and I’m a big fan of the brand.
A few weeks ago, Pantene reached out with an offer to send me one of their new-ish lines to review: Truly Relaxed or Truly Natural. I have chemically straightened hair and have used the Truly Relaxed products off-and-on for almost a year (they’re pretty fabulous), so I opted to try the Truly Natural line. Even though my hair hasn’t been in its “natural” state for almost three decades, the product descriptions contained important buzz words like “moisture,” “shine,” and “frizz control”—so I decided to give them a try.
Here’s what Pantene sent me:
Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Clarifying Shampoo is “designed to gently cleanse your hair’s unique structure and remove buildup—leaving it shiny, clean, and refreshed.” Overall, I really liked this shampoo. It effectively cleansed my hair, but was gentle while doing so. It smells fresh and I love that the formula is silicone, Paraben and dye-free.
Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Deep Conditioner is an “oil-enriched conditioner that moisturizes and detangles natural hair. This conditioner can provide up to 72 hours of moisture, leaving hair so healthy it shines.” Again, this product did exactly what it promised: it imparted moisture while really aiding in the detangling process (which is often a literal pain for me). The formula is lightweight enough that you could use it daily, if that’s your routine.
Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Defining Curls Custard “works with your hair’s unique structure to define curls and control frizz up to 24 hours, even in humid weather. This styling custard leaves curls manageable and feeling soft.” Like I mentioned earlier, I don’t have curls. So I can’t really attest to how well this product will prevent ringlets from going rogue. But I will say that I applied this product sort of like I do other leave-ins (on towel dried hair before blow drying) and I think it gave me some extra moisture and styling hold. But note that the consistence is very light—not really like what you would expect from something called a custard.
Pantene Pro-V Truly Natural Shine Serum with Argan Oil is “a daily serum that provides intense moisture and a long-lasting brilliant shine. It leaves your hair soft, smooth, and protected and ready for any natural ’do!” My hair is the black hole of shine, so I absolutely love this product. I used it after blow drying to give me that healthy shine that my hair lacks. And, every other day, I added a pump of the serum to my regular styling cream to re-up my shine.
The Truly Natural Line also includes a Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner that “instantly cleanses, conditions, and detangles hair in one easy step without stripping the hair’s natural moisture. This low-lathering formula refreshes unmanageable curls and helps control frizz, leaving hair soft and shiny after use.” I really, really, REALLY wanted to try this product but it wasn’t sent to me for review. But I plan to pick up a bottle this week.
So the moral of the story is that, even if you don’t have natural hair, you can certainly use these products. I’ve personally used the products on my dry, chemically-straightened hair and found them to be gentle and very hydrating. My usually Sahara thirsty strands were hydrated, soft and silky. And at $5-8, the price point is nice too.

This weekend, grab your girlfriends and go see The Best Man Holiday – which hits theaters today.
On Tuesday, I attended a screening with Mama Spoiled Pretty and her BFF, Estelle – and we had so much fun. We laughed hard and cried harder (this rom-com is also a tearjerker – so bring some tissues). In fact, I got so choked up at one point that I had to remind myself that this is a movie and the actors are all fine IRL. Anyway, here’s the movie description:
After nearly 15 years apart, Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Monica Calhoun, Melissa De Sousa and Regina Hall reprise their career-launching roles in The Best Man Holiday, the long-awaited next chapter to the film that ushered in a new era of comedy. When the college friends finally reunite over the Christmas holidays, they will discover just how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and romances to be ignited.
As a big fan of the first movie, I was so excited when this sequel was announced. But I was also skeptical about how they were going to make this movie work when so much time had passed since the original. Well, I can tell you the extra time gave the characters room to grow – which makes this film worth the wait. I especially liked how the viewer is reunited with these characters as they reconnect with each other.
Another reason to go see The Best Man Holiday? How ’bout this? Wah-BAM…
Morris Chestnut is supposed to be playing a Giants running back with a 15+ year career in the league. Even I know that’s ridic, but I’m willing to suspend disbelief.
Here’s a photo from my favorite movie moment. I don’t want to say too much and possibly spoil it. Just peep the photo caption for a hashtag hint.
Whether you’ve seen the original or not – I think you will thoroughly enjoy The Best Man Holiday. In the immortal words of Clueless’s Travis Birkenstock, I give it “Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Fine holiday fun.”
As a beauty expert, women always ask me for tips on long-lasting, fresh-looking, flawless makeup. And my answer is always the same: make time to prime. It doesn’t matter whether you have 50 minutes or 5 minutes to apply your makeup – you should always take the time to prep your canvas to achieve the best result possible. You wouldn’t apply a saturated, matte lipstick to dry and cracking lips – would you? And you wouldn’t dream of wearing that bodycon dress without slipping into some Spanx, right? The same theory applies to your face.
Now that you understand the importance of prime time—as I like to call it—it’s equally important to find the right priming products for you. Primers aren’t just the product you put on your face before foundation. In fact, my favorite primers are actual skincare products that have priming benefits. As a mom and a businesswoman, I have very little time to mess around – so I appreciate priming products that do double duty, like two of my new favorites from Olay Regenerist.
Olay Regenerist’s new Advanced Anti-Aging Wrinkle Revolution Complex ($24.99) is a moisturizer that utilizes optics-based skincare to smooth skin and instantly relax the appearance of wrinkles. I’ve been using this moisturizer for the past few weeks and I love it. It provides just the right level of hydration and moisture for my finicky skin, leaves a velvety soft finish, and smells great too. The product’s priming qualities help my makeup glide on like a dream and lock it on for all-day wear.
I’ve also been using the Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Eye Cream & Lash Serum Duo ($25.99), a 360° anti-aging eye care solution, designed to treat lids, lines and lashes for younger looking eyes that are brighter and firmer in one week. The dual-ended product contains an eye cream that smoothes and firms the appearance of lids and softens fine lines, while the lash serum instantly thickens and nourishes lashes. This product really helps prep my eye area for shadow, liner and mascara.
But what I love most about these new Olay Regenerist products is that they can be used with or without makeup. If you’re having a low-maintenance kind of day, just apply a little to bare skin and it gives you a you-but-better look.
Just proof, once again, that it doesn’t take a million bucks to look like, well, a million bucks.

Neutrogena announced today that Emmy nominated actress (and my homegirl) Kerry Washington has joined the brand’s current roster of talent. Smart move, right? I mean…just look at this goddess’s face!
Not only will Kerry be one of the faces for Neutrogena – but for the first time ever, she will also serve as a “creative consultant” to the brand, sharing her valuable insights with the marketing, scientific, and retail teams.
“The more I learned about the company’s values, guiding principles, and commitment to quality, the more I realized that Neutrogena is so much more than your average beauty company. I knew I wanted to be a part of a company that is helping to make a difference in people’s lives. As a creative consultant, I will be able to have a real voice inside this amazing company, which is a tremendously exciting endeavor,” says Washington.
“Neutrogena is about making a difference in women’s lives. We partnered with Kerry because she’s an inspiration to women everywhere and shares this same value system. Her work ethic, charity commitments and, of course, her ability to balance it all while also having beautiful, healthy skin, made this an obvious fit. She is truly aspirational to everyone,” says Michelle Freyre, General Manager, Neutrogena.
Washington joins beauty icons Jennifer Garner, Julie Bowen, Gabrielle Union, Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts, Diane Lane and Sandra Echeverria as a member of the Neutrogena family.
As you probably know, I am a marketing professional by day, a beauty blogger by night and a mom/wife 24/7. But what you may not know is that, after graduating from college, I attended law school. Ultimately, I chose a different path – which makes me much happier. What doesn’t make me happy, however, are the school loans I’ve been paying off for the past 10 years…and I still have a ways to go. Every month, it pains me to pay off an education that I’m not even using.
I’ve often fantasized about how awesome it would be if I had discovered my talents for marketing and communications a few years earlier, so that I could have bypassed law school and saved myself a lot of money. And I’ve sometimes wished that I could go back and make some different decisions – knowing what I know now.
The only snafu with this fantasy is that I met Graham – aka Mr. Spoiled Pretty – on the first day of law school. We became best friends our first year, started dating the second year and we’ve been together ever since (12 years and going strong). So while I sometimes regret going to law school and incurring all of that student loan debt, the truth is that the amazing life I’ve built with Graham is invaluable and I wouldn’t want to change a thing about it.
These are exactly the themes explored in About Time – a film from Richard Curtis, the creator of Love Actually, Notting Hill, and Four Weddings and a Funeral (three of my all time favorite rom-coms). The movie tells the story of a young man whose gift allows him to go back and relive any moment of his life. But instead of making every moment perfect, he learns that life and love are most extraordinary when you embrace all of their imperfections.
Critics are already calling About Time “the first must-see movie of the fall” and “easily the most heartwarming, feel-great film of the season.”
I don’t know about you, but this movie sounds like a must-see. I’m ready to get the popcorn poppin’.
About Time comes to a theater near you on November 8, 2013.
