Susana Monaco Flutter Tube Dress

I just had to share how much I adore this Susana Monaco 'Flutter Tube Dress' I just bought from Shopbop.com.  I'm usually very hesitant to buy clothing online because I'm short and curvy and I can't be assured that something will look right until I try it on. And even when I do buy clothes off the Internet, they're CONTINUE READING

Beautiful Things My Mother Taught Me

Mom and me, circa 1979 Disclosure: This post is sponsored by CoverGirl. Mother’s Day is this Sunday and I’m so excited. Not just because Mr. Spoiled Pretty and my son, Westley, are treating me to a decadent brunch. But because it’s an opportunity to celebrate my hero, Andrea Stamps. I must admit that until two years ago, Mother’s Day was just another CONTINUE READING

Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candles: 2 for $22

At Christmastime, I agonized over what to get my son's daycare teachers. There are 12 of them - and even though he has his two main teachers, they all have interaction with him and take excellent care of him. So I needed to buy 12 gifts to show my appreciation, without breaking the bank. $10 each seemed doable, except CONTINUE READING

IMAN Skin Tone Evener BB Creme SPF 15

As a beauty expert, I’m embarrassed by how late I am to the BB Cream party. In the past year, so many friends and colleagues have asked me about BB Creams—what’s the buzz, which brands are the best, etc. —and they would look at me funny when I admitted to not having tried BB Creams yet. I mean, they CONTINUE READING

CoverGirl Outlast Brilliant Shine Nail Gloss in Vio-last

I’m very fickle about my fingernails. Before I paint my nails or get them professionally did, I spend a inordinate amount of time pondering my polish options. I consider the season, recent trends, my wardrobe that week and anywhere special I might go. But despite all of this planning, I’m usually over my polish choice before it even dries. Manly Makeup

In the February issue of Elle Magazine, Jessica Alba blasts Zac Efron – saying, “He looks like a child with a lot of makeup.” Oh, snap! Apparently not everyone is smitten with High School Musical’s resident heartthrob.

This got me thinking about man makeup, also known as “complexion enhancers.” I’m all for men putting their best face forward, and I consider myself to be pretty open-minded. But at the risk of sounding like a fuddy duddy, I think the concept of men wearing makeup – on any day but October 31st – is just bizarre.

While most men who don makeup do so on the down low, have you noticed how some cosmetics-loving lads are all in your face about it? Take, for example, one Pete Wentz – who’s famous for dating Ashlee Simpson and wearing ‘guyliner.’ He even went so far as to create a how-to video – his favorite is MAC Eye Pencil in Ebony.

bty070207 2 Manly MakeupThen there’s Jared Leto. What in the hell happened to Jared Leto?!?! I realize that a lot of people go through a goth phase…but, typically, it’s when you’re 16, not 36. Right? It’s a shame because he’s such a naturally handsome guy – and what’s worse is that he’s terrible at applying his makeup. You would think that a guy – who is rarely seen without liner – would get some lessons or pick up a Kevyn Aucoin book. Or, better yet, watch the Pete Wentz video. Ugh. I want my Jordan Catalano back.

I did some research, and was shocked to learn that these guys aren’t simply slipping into Sephora to stock up on beauty necessities – though the chain does offer a few. Oh no. Male Species, Studio 5ive, and KenMen are just a few of the Internet purveyors of male-specific cosmetics (get a load of this bronzer’s suggestive name).

And if you think that this is merely a trend among eccentric Hollywood types, guess again. In 2006, $4.8 million was spent on male grooming products in the U.S., a 7 percent increase over the year before and a 42 percent increase from 2001, according to a London-based marketing and research company. Behold the power of makeup…it’s irresistable to both girls and boys.

How do you feel about men wearing makeup? Talk amongst yourselves.

shanghailily Shanghai Surprise: NARS Spring 2008
For Spring, NARS presents Shanghai Lily

The ultimate dichotomy of innocence and seduction, NARS Spring 2008 mystifies with a mélange of hues delicate yet robust, creating the modern hybrid of feminine temptation.

OMG. You are going to love this collection! If you think the colors look good on your computer screen, wait until you see them on your skin (below, you can see the products on my skin)! The velvety shadows glide on like, well, velvet – while Dolce Vita Lip Gloss and Belle de Jour Lip Pencil are classics reinvented in new formulations.

nars+010 Shanghai Surprise: NARS Spring 2008
Here’s what I’m wearing (that’s my arm):

Left column
Alahambra Eye Shadow Duo – golden champagne and metallic rose mist

Middle column
Top: Success Lipstick (burnt sienna semi-matte)
Bottom: Manhunt Lipstick (sheer poppy red)

Right Column
Top: Dolce Vita Lip Gloss (sheer dusty rose)
Middle & Bottom: Stolen Kisses/Pampa Lip Stain Gloss (sparkling caramel pink/nutmeg with a touch of shimmer)

As you can see, these colors truly take you from day to night. There’s nothing garish in this collection – but don’t be fooled; Shanghai Lily is anything but a shrinking violet. This is but a sampling of the products; check the website for a complete list.

Spoiled Pretty Prediction: Like its predecessor, Dolce Vita Lip Gloss is going to fly off shelves – so you’d be wise to get yours sooner rather than later.

Guest Post: Philosophy Kiss Me Lip Balm

km Guest Post: Philosophy Kiss Me Lip Balm
Kim Stanley* writes:

No matter what I do, my lips become dry and chapped during the winter months. However, I have found a product that alleviates both problems. Although the company is not new to beauty junkies, Philosophy is better known for products such as Hope in a Jar. Kiss Me is a very emollient lip balm that delivers on its promise to leave your lips well-moisturized.

Lipsticks and lip glosses look best on lips that are smooth and well hydrated without cracked or peeling skin. If you want to fully appreciate the ultimate lip care experience you should use an exfoliant first and follow up with a super moisturizing product to protect and heal your lips because lips can not maintain moisture. A good lip exfoliant to try is Laura Geller Lip Strip.

I put Kiss Me to the test during the busy Christmas season while cashiering, for 9 hour shifts, at Sephora. On average, I applied the lip balm approximately three times during these long hours of talking, eating and drinking but not more than 4 times in a 24-hour period.

The one caveat of this product, but its performance is not affected, is that it reacts to hot and cold temperatures. The tube will harden if left in the cold and will soften during the warmer months.

Philosophy’s Kiss Me offered the best of all worlds because it had a natural shine, moisturized, tasted like citrus, and was long-lasting. I purchased the lip balm by Philosophy in Kiss Me Red, but it is available in clear and pink shades as well. I love this stuff!

No Golden Globes Means No Red Carpet

gg2 No Golden Globes Means No Red Carpet
Roll up the red carpet…the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced yesterday that the 65th Annual Golden Globes are cancelled. Instead, the winners will be revealed during a mind-numbingly boring, hour-long press conference – covered live by NBC News beginning at 6:00 pm PST on January 13.

gg No Golden Globes Means No Red CarpetFaced with the reality of nominees’ nonattendance and mobs of picketing writers outside of the The Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom, the HFPA had no choice but to pull the proverbial plug on the awards show. So no red carpet, swag bags, obligatory ‘kiss the award’ photo ops, or swanky after-parties this year. Which also means no E! Fashion Police recaps re-played ten times a day for a month following the ceremony.

While I applaud the actors’ solidarity with the Writers Guild of America, I’m bummed that the pomp and circumstance has been stripped away, and replaced with a clinical reading of winners’ names. I wanted to see some purty dresses and Spring makeup trends…how about you?

And you know that there are some ticked off nominees, wondering why their year was the year of the strike. I wonder if they’ll just chill out at home, pop some Paul Newman, and celebrate with close friends and family. Or maybe George Clooney will send out an Evite or post a message on his Myspace page, and everyone will head over there.

rumer willis No Golden Globes Means No Red CarpetBut you know who’s probably the pissiest about this whole mess? Miss Golden Globes 2008, herself – Rumer Willis. That girl just can’t catch a break.

All I know is that they’d better settle this nonsense by the time the Oscars roll around. I’m not playin’.
