My Date With Franc at the Giovanni & Pileggi Salon

giovanni+%26+pileggi1 My Date With Franc at the Giovanni & Pileggi Salon
A month ago, I was invited to the grand re-opening of Giovanni & Pileggi, now located in an 1840’s Federal Period Townhouse at 256 South 16th Street in Center City Philadelphia. A few weeks later, I was invited back to the salon – this time, to have my hair cut and colored by one of their talented stylists.

Last Tuesday, I arrived at the salon and was greeted by Franc, whom I had met back in April at the opening. His friendly demeanor put me at ease, at least a little bit. But having been in a 13-year monogamous relationship with my hairdresser Erik, I was having heart palpitations about putting my hair in someone else’s hands.

daneen+and+franc My Date With Franc at the Giovanni & Pileggi SalonWhen Franc sat me down in his chair and asked me what I had in mind for my new do, I surprised myself when I responded, “Do whatever you think is best. I trust you.” I removed the elastic from ponytail and Franc sized up my mane. “Highlights,” he said assertively. “Highlights will give your hair dimension.”

After mixing up my color, he quickly applied the mixture and foil to sections of my hair with amazing dexterity. While working his magic, I remembered I was there in a journalistic capacity and began firing off questions.

Franc told me that as a student at The Philadelphia High School for Creative And Performing Arts, he befriended some girls in the dance department and started doing their hair. Not long after, he realized that hair was his calling and enrolled in beauty school. After graduating from beauty school, he moved to New York City and worked at Bumble & Bumble. It was during his years in NYC that he noticed how segregated the industry was – white customers patronized white salons and black clients patronized black salons. So Franc decided to teach himself how to work with ethnic/textured hair, so that he could cater to all patrons.

In New York, he honed his craft working at the Bumble & Bumble salon – as well as doing fashion shows and photo shoots. But a few years ago, he got a little homesick and decided to move back to Philly to work exclusively in a salon setting. “I much prefer working in a salon because I enjoy helping regular people transform into better versions of themselves,” he said. “It’s not that hard to make a model look good. Plus salon work allows me to be creative. When you’re doing editorial or runway work, you’re following someone else’s template.”

After rinsing the dye out of my hair, a gloss was applied and allowed to marinate – to add all-over shine to my dull locks. But before long, I was back in Franc’s chair. He quickly blow dried my hair and whipped out his shears. Again, I shocked myself by telling him to do what he thought was best. He decided to keep the length, but add some layers that would give my hair shape and movement. Then he styled it without any input from me. So how’d he do?

Amazing, right?!?!?!?!?! I love my hair and I love Franc for transforming me into a better version of myself.

If you live anywhere near Philadelphia, even if it’s kind of a hike, you must get to Giovanni & Pileggi and pay Franc a visit.

Gossip Girls Love The Smoky Eye

The Gossip Girl gals may not all get along, but there’s one thing they agree on – a smoky eye paired with a soft glossy lip.

GG+Blair Gossip Girls Love The Smoky Eye

GG+Serena Gossip Girls Love The Smoky Eye

GG+Georgina Gossip Girls Love The Smoky Eye

GG+Vanessa Gossip Girls Love The Smoky Eye

My favorite look of the finale belonged to Blair. Normally, the combination of messy updo, braids, and Jennifer Behr Patent Orchid Skinny Headband would spell overkill. But on Blair, it was pitch perfect. Serena and Georgina? Meh.

And while I liked Vanessa’s cascade of curls, her dress was a mess. I mean, if you’re invited to attend high society nuptials, don’t show up in an frock homesewn by your BFF’s little sister. It kinda reminded me of the Gordon Gartrell episode of The Cosby Show…except that, in this case, Nessa had no idea how ridiculous she looked. It’s no wonder Nate called it quits.

Totally Tubular: Light Brights Giveaway!

Light+Brights Totally Tubular: Light Brights Giveaway!
Good morning, pretties. I was absolutely exhausted yesterday and went to sleep without posting the latest giveaway. My bad.

So without further ado, here’s how we’re spoiling you pretty this week…

The 80’s is back in a big way, inspiring new trends in fashion and beauty. But before you bust out your shoulder pads, leg warmers, and jelly bracelets – be aware that what’s en vogue (and in Vogue) right now is a modern take on 80’s retro glam.

So how do you embrace this trend without looking like a Dynasty reject? Three Custom Color Specialists has the perfect product.

Light Brights (not to be confused with Lite Brite, on of my fave childhood toys) is a collection of moisturizing, balmy stains in DayGlo fluorescent shades. When applied, they let the natural beauty of your lips shine through, while enhancing your pout with a sheer brightness. They can be layered for a fuller coverage, and can also be dabbed on the cheeks for a fresh glow.

Light Brights are available in four rad shades, named after popular NYC dancehalls from the ’80s:

This past weekend, I traveled to Los Angeles to attend the first ever Total Beauty Blog Community Summit, in partnership with Intelligent Beauty. Over 60 of the top beauty bloggers participated in workshops on editing beauty content, public relations, innovative online marketing strategies, cutting-edge technology tools and techniques, as well as beauty trend forecasting and new product launches.

Now that I’m back in Philly, I’m ready to dish. You’re nosey and I’m chatty, so here’s a recap of things seen and heard at the summit:

dr+hirsch Everywhere in L.A. Takes Twenty Minutes
Dr. Alan Hirsch has created Sensa, a revolutionary weight-loss system that uses the science of taste and smell to turn off your hunger. Just sprinkle Sensa’s “tastants” on all of your meals and snacks to feel full faster, eat less and lose more weight. The beauty bloggers in attendance are the first to receive Sensa (besides those involved in the clinical trials), and you best believe we were sprinklin’ it on everything, child!

tb+summit+004 Everywhere in L.A. Takes Twenty Minutes
Kirsten Lambertson from Beauty Riot, Nadine Haobsh from Jolie Nadine, Anne Fritz from Jet Set Girls, Tia Williams from Shake Your Beauty and Annie Tomlin from BellaSugar presented a discussion on blogging as a career. I took copious notes, asked questions, and hardly breathed during the hour-long session. These ladies are blogging rock stars, people – and I was so in awe of their talent.

Everywhere in L.A. Takes Twenty Minutes
Over lunch, they announced the Total Beauty Awards. From the more than 120+ blogs in the blog community, Spoiled Pretty won for “Best Content.” If greasiest face was a category, I probably would have taken that too.

Dusty+Simington Everywhere in L.A. Takes Twenty Minutes
Dusty Simington, award-winning hairstylist from Salon Gregorie’s in Newport Beach, had this to say about being in a hair rut: “If you look at your Christmas pictures and your hair looks the same from year to year, you’re uninformed and your hairdresser is lazy and tired.” Dusty also bemoaned Katie Holmes’ ubiquitous bob, remarking, “If you see it, kill it.” I was rolling!

redpoint+blush+duo Everywhere in L.A. Takes Twenty Minutes
I received a makeover and got some professional headshots done. The makeup artist used products from RAW Natural Beauty and Redpoint Cosmetics – and ever since, I have been infatuated with RAW Minerals Foundation, Redpoint Rejuvenating Blush Duo in Barely Rose, and Redpoint Volumizing Lip Gloss in Cuddle.

tb+summit+009 Everywhere in L.A. Takes Twenty Minutes
On Saturday night, we attended a Venice Beach VIP Party at Air-Conditioned Lounge. But by 11:45pm, Amber, Marina, and I were all partied out and went outside in search of our ride.

amber+daneen+and+marina+in+sun+valley Everywhere in L.A. Takes Twenty MinutesFortunately, the limo-bus was parked in the adjacent lot. Unfortunately, the driver was nowhere to be found. So we sat down on the curb and anxiously awaited his return.

Ten minutes before another bus finally showed up, a hoopdie full of teenagers drives by and one of the occupants asks us, “Are you guys coming from the prom?” Not knowing whether to be flattered or insulted, we simply said no. Then the girl adds, before driving off, “Well, you guys look good!” Ridic, right?

I brought home a ton of products that I can’t wait to review and knowledge that I can’t wait to implement. Many thanks to Total Beauty for affording me this amazing opportunity to better my blog and connect with the members of this incredible community!
