My New Glasses: Kate Spade Liesel Frames

My New Glasses: Kate Spade Liesel Frames

After a million years of wearing cheap eyeglasses (you know…that 2 pair for $99 deal you get with an eye exam?), I decided to invest some more pesos in my peepers. A few weeks ago, I visited Eyeglasses Etc. in Flourtown, PA – where the Spoiled Pretty family are regulars. My mom brought me along to pick up a new pair of prescription sunglasses, and looking at their selection of fab frames made my discount frames seem, well, bargain basement. So I asked Harriet, the owner, to pick out some styles to flatter my face (she’s like an expert eyeglass matchmaker).

My New Glasses: Kate Spade Liesel FramesAll of her choices were right-on, but this pair of Kate Spade Liesel frames are my perfect match; I’m one of those people who believes that leopard print makes everything better.

I am so pleased with my choice, and the price (my insurance covered a good chunk of the bill). If you’re in the Philadelphia area and are visually challenged, I encourage you to pop by Eyeglasses Etc. and tell them Spoiled Pretty sent you.

ORLY Sweet Collection

 ORLY Sweet Collection

Yesterday, I got the itch to change up my mani. Last week, I wore Chanel Le Vernis in Particuliere. But the recent wave of warm weather had me craving a punchier polish. After sifting through my nail polish cache of about 125+ bottles, I still couldn’t find a shade to get excited about. So I decided to postpone my polish change. But then the funniest thing happened. A sample of ORLY’s new spring 2010 Sweet Collection showed up in my mailbox and Pixy Stix had me at hello.

orly+sweet+collection+nail+polish ORLY Sweet CollectionThis collection of vibrant, candy-inspired pastels includes:

Gumdrop: pastel turquoise crème
Cotton Candy: baby pink crème
Lollipop: pastel purple crème
Pixy Stix: salmon crème
Snowcone: baby blue crème
Lemonade: pastel yellow crème

And each polish in this collection comes with a free matching flavored mini lip gloss key chain.

To achieve my manicure, I used Essie First Base base coat, followed by two coats of ORLY Pixy Stix then a coat of Seche Vite.

All ORLY nail lacquers, including the Sweet Collection, are free of DBP, Toluene, Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde resin. Oh…and you got a love the rubberized ‘Gripper Cap.’

The Sweet Collection ($7.50 per bottle) is available now at orlybeauty.com, Sally Beauty, and Ulta.

Aveda Shampure Soy Wax Candle: Simply the Best

aveda+shampure+candle Aveda Shampure Soy Wax Candle: Simply the Best

I am way past due on my spring cleaning – and, as a result, my apartment looks like an episode of Hoarders: Buried Alive. But despite the clutter, it smells and feels like Clean House up in here, thanks to my Aveda Shampure Soy Wax Candle. Seriously, light the wick and you’ll be amazed at how the fragrance instantly transforms a stifled space into a peaceful retreat.

I’m a connoisseur of candles and the Shampure Candle is one of my absolute favorites. Its calming aroma of 25 pure flower and plant essences – including certified organic lavender, petitgrain and ylang ylang – relaxes and soothes me at the end of a particularly hectic day. Even Mr. Spoiled Pretty raves about the scent.

At $30 for a 9.7 oz candle (which burns for 50 hours), this one is kinda pricey…but it smells so fantastic that I gladly buck up. On the upside, the Shampure Candle is refillable and refills will only set you back $19.

The only way I can see improving upon this candle is if Aveda were to sell it in bulk. Aveda, are you listening? I want to buy in bulk. One Shampure Candle is just not enough.

Snake Massage? Sssssay What?!?

snake+massage Snake Massage? Sssssay What?!?The other day, Mr. Spoiled Pretty was perusing msn.com when he happened upon an article entitled “Bizarre Ways to Beat Stress and Unwind: 10 lesser-known methods for dealing with a high-stress life.” First up on the list: snake massage. Um, say what?!?!? I can’t think of anything more stress inducing than having serpents slither all over me. I’d probably die of cardiac arrest before the whole thing was through.

But oddly enough, people actually pay for this kind of ‘therapy.’

Strange: Some people like the feel of non-poisonous reptiles slithering across their bodies in spa-like settings, with larger, heavier snakes providing a deeper kneading as they crawl across flesh. But how effective are these creatures at reducing stress? Even snakes’ general pressure on the body can be relaxing, says Kriota Willberg, a licensed massage therapist and an instructor at Swedish Institute, in New York. But what’s missing is a snake’s ability to systematically and selectively apply pressure, and to respond to the body’s feedback.

But True: When a patient is stressed out, the neck, shoulders, lower back and lower extremities are often especially tense, says Willberg. Within these areas of tension, multiple layers of muscles are often involved. By incorporating different muscle-relaxing techniques, such as tempo, expertise at palpating, and varying the pressure—skills that are not part of a snake’s repertoire—massage therapists customize their work to patients’ needs. The result is a modality that’s both stress-reducing and therapeutic.

I don’t care what anyone says – snake massage sounds like something they’d do to the contestants on Fear Factor, right before making them eat crocodile eyeballs. And paying for this wackadoo service? You gotsssssssssssssss to be a resident of crazytown to reach into your wallet for some nonsense like this. Someone would have to pay me a helluva lot more than $70 for six snakes to have a playdate on my semi-clothed body.

Visit msn.com for more bizarre stress relievers, including jaw massage, beer baths and ironing.

Makeup Mondays With Mario: Bright Lips For Spring

mmwmd large Makeup Mondays With Mario: Bright Lips For Spring

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.

Hi Mario,

What is your favorite makeup trend for spring, and what products can women use to get that look? Thanks in advance.

Thanks,
Dawn

alexis+bledel+pink+lip Makeup Mondays With Mario: Bright Lips For SpringHey Dawn,

One of my favorite trends for spring is bright lips! As an artist, I personally would use brighter lip colors more often then I get to. I’m liking bright colors in pink and orange, but I prefer a sheer formula. Here are a couple of universally flattering shades by MAC: Lipstick in Lustering and Vegas Volt. Both colors are sheer and give a beautiful pop of color to the face.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

xo,
Mario

Pretty in Particulière

chanel+le+vernis+particuliere Pretty in Particulière
chanel+particuliere Pretty in ParticulièrePeep my polish. This week’s mani comes courtesy of Chanel. Le Vernis in Particulière (from the spring makeup collection) is a putty/mushroomy shade that resembles one of my all-time faves, OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques.
While they appear almost identical in the bottle, the subtle differences become more obvious during application. First, Particulière is lighter than its OPI counterpart. It is also more brown than YDKJ, which is more gray. Finally, the Chanel formula is more opaque and creamier – so the coverage is better than OPI.
If taupe-y nail polishes are a once in a while kind of thing for you, there’s no reason you need both. But if you’re like me and can’t get enough of an offbeat yet neutral nail, I would recommend picking this up – even if you already have YDKJ.
