Bath & Body Works Cooling Gel Lotion Needs A New Name

A few weeks ago, I paid a visit to my local Bath & Body Works store. I was on the hunt for a tropical-smelling body wash that wouldn't break the bank, and B&BW seemed like a good place to search. When I entered the store, I was greeted my a really nice saleswoman who asked me what I was CONTINUE READING

Laura Mercier Master Class: Makeup Bag Must-Haves in Your 30s

Every month, my girlfriends from college and I get together for dinner in the Philadelphia area. We started this tradition about two years ago, and - of course - we have a great time catching up and reminiscing!  Most of them are product-obsessed (like me), and most have been through some sort of make-up introductory when we became "of age" to wear it.  Now CONTINUE READING

Dermadoctor Physical Chemistry

One of my all-time favorite products is Dermadoctor KP Duty, a dual action body exfoliator that combines the benefits of a chemical peel and microdermabrasion. It was developed to treat chicken skin - those little red bumps that many people get on their upper arms. But, for years, I've been using it to exfoliate my legs pre-shave.  There's really no body exfoliator CONTINUE READING

MAC Earthly Harmony Nail Lacquer

Two weekends ago, Mr. Spoiled Pretty sweetly offered to watch Westley for the day so that I could rejoin the living and get my shop on. So I drove to the King of Prussia Mall and proceeded to give my Visa a workout.

While perusing the MAC counter at Nordstrom, a new nail polish caught my eye. Earthly Harmony, one of six new shades created by renowned nail guru Jin Soon, immediately reminded me of OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques (one of my all time favorites) – a slightly lighter version with frosty sparkle, anyway. It took me about three seconds to decide I couldn’t leave without a bottle on my person. Sadly, it was not meant to be. The saleswoman apologetically explained that they had sold out of the shade and wasn’t sure that they’d get any more in stock.

mac nail trend fw 2010 collection+jin+soon MAC Earthly Harmony Nail LacquerWhile forced to leave the store empty handed, I decided that I wouldn’t leave with nekkid nails. So I brazenly took the tester bottle and gave myself a quick mani right there at the counter. How tacky is that? I know, I know…I’m a mess. Ain’t no shame in my game.

Undeterred, I left Nordstrom and headed to MAC’s freestanding store in another section of the mall. Once again, in the words of Cher Horowitz, I was brutally rebuffed. Another MAC artist informed me of the shade’s popularity and explained that it had sold out almost immediately. So when I returned home, I juiced up my laptop and ordered myself a bottle online. Thank God for e-commerce.

Earthly Harmony and the rest of the MAC Nail Trend F/W ’10 collection is available, for a limited time, at maccosmetics.com and nordstrom.com. Heed my advice and nail this shade down before it’s going, going, gone.

Mario,

I’m going to start by saying that you are a genius! I have learned so much through reading your blog and your Makeup Mondays with Mario column. What are your thoughts on makeup palettes? I have so many little eye shadow and blush containers that I never use because it’s not convenient to open up every little jar one by one. Do you like palettes and if so, any recommendations for everyday colors? Thank you so much and keep inspiring!

Thanks, Debbie

Debbie,

Thanks for visiting MMwM, Debbie! I totally agree with you when it comes to the single eye shadow and blush containers. I have hundreds of them in my drawers and in my kit. That being said, I do like makeup palettes and I often use them on set. The trick is finding the right palette that works nicely for you. Check out The Balmbini Palette by TheBalm. I love the combination of shades for everyday makeup and one of my fave blush colors (Hot Mama) comes in the palette! Hot Mama blush is very similar to NARS’ Orgasm blush and it works beautifully on darker complexions. For bronzy, warm tones, Lorac’s Croc Palette is perfect. You won’t get lip product in this palette but you’ll have four great eye shadows and a basic natural colored rosy blush. These are only two of many makeup palettes out there to check out. Have fun!

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

bump+nose Makeup Mondays With Mario: Nose Job

Hello Mario!

I have a roman nose with the classic bump on the bridge. I’ve been searching on how to minimize this problem, but can only find tips on how to minimize a wide or long nose. I understand that dark recedes and light makes things more pronounced. I got so frustrated with my lack of contouring skills that I decided to cancel out my whole nose and just shade the whole thing. Boy was that a mistake – haha. For some reason my nose was even more pronounced! Can you offer a some kind of makeup suggestion for this beak of mine? Thank you so much, and I love your work!

xoxo,
Susan

Hi Susan,

I’m no stranger to the beak, especially being of Albanian decent! My mother and father both actually have “the roman nose,” as do so many men and women in eastern Europe. Unfortunately, makeup will not make such a big difference in decreasing the bump on the bridge. You will see best results in a photo once contoured properly rather than in person. Here’s how to give your self a mini nose job…

You were right about dark shades receding and lighter shades emphasizing and bringing things out. Keep that in mind and with a small shadow brush, apply your lighter shade below and above the bump in the center. Make sure the bump is matte and with the darker, matte shade, very lightly sweep over it. There should be no harsh lines visible. Again, using the darker shade, you’re now going to apply it to the tip of the nose that hangs downward so when you’re looking straight at yourself in the mirror it should appear as if your nose ends where the dark shadow on the tip begins. Contouring takes a lot of practice so I advise that you try this out many times before you go out. Good luck!

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

Les Khakis De Chanel Nail Polish

Posted on by daneen in Nail Polish, Nails | Leave a comment

chanel+nouvelle+vague+nail+polish Les Khakis De Chanel Nail PolishThis summer, I was a little late jumping on the Chanel Nouvelle Vague nail polish bandwagon. By the time I discovered the rockin’ robin’s egg blue lacquer at a local salon, I could only get a manicure. Buying a bottle there – or anywhere else – was out of the question, as the shade was sold out everywhere. Well, except for eBay, where a single bottle had a price tag of $75.

After missing out on Nouvelle Vague, I swore I would never again be tardy to a Chanel LE VERNIS party. And I don’t want you to be singing the shoulda woulda coulda’s either. Which is why I beseech you to buy Les Khakis De Chanel, a collection of three nail polishes developed in celebration of Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out.

les+khakis+de+chanel+nail+polish Les Khakis De Chanel Nail Polish

Three limited-editions hues (Khaki Rose, a dusky pink-beige; Khaki Vert, a mossy foam green; and Khaki Brun, a pale stony taupe) are must-haves for any beauty lover’s polish collection…especially if you’re like me and appreciate an edgy, neutral nail. The shades can be worn alone, but I’ve been told they can be particularly edgy when all three are painted in an alternating, camouflage-y pattern.

Considering I’ve got my hands full with a 3 week old baby, I’m gonna stick to a minimal mani and leave the artistry to you nail philes out there.

Les Khakis De Chanel are now available at Chanel boutiques, Chanel.com and select department stores.
