My hair grows like a weed. Unfortunately, the hair of which I speak is not on my head. My legs and underarms give my razor a workout. If I shave in the morning, by afternoon, I've got stubble. The shower and my chemically-straightened hair are frenemies. Every seventh day when I wash my hair, they get along great in a shampoo Shangri-la. But the rest of the week, I employ a shower cap to keep the steam from undoing the silky straightness. I have been wearing shower caps since I was a child, and I’ve tried them CONTINUE READING

Get Catty With Wildfox Catfarer Sunglasses

I've been searching for some cat eye sunnies for forever. On a whim, I bought these Wildfox Catfarer Sunglasses from Shopbop - hoping that they wouldn't look too cartoonish. Even though I was afraid they'd be too large, I'm digging the oversized frames. They make a statement without overwhelming my face. And the cat eye shape is subtle, so it's not CONTINUE READING

L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base Is Great For Greasy Gals

Loreal+Studio+Secrets+Primer LOreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base Is Great For Greasy GalsAnd the award for Best New Primer for Greasy Gals goes to L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base. I received a sample last month, and it was love at first swipe.

Don’t be fooled by its putty-like texture. It applies like a dream, leaving skin so satiny soft that you’ll wonder exactly how you lived your life before this product came into existence. The primer easily disguises pores and wrinkles, and imparts a matte finish. So if the summer heat and humidity turns your mug into an oil slick, you’d be a brainy beauty to invest in a jar of this pink magic.

L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base is intended to be worn in tandem with your favorite tinted moisturizer or foundation. But if you’re having a low-maintenance kind of day, just apply a little to bare skin and it gives you a you-but-better look.

The formula is 100% oil- and fragrance-free, non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic – so even the most sensitive skins should tolerate this product.

Just proof, once again, that it doesn’t take a million bucks to look like, well, a million bucks. L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base is this Recessionista’s Fabuless Pick of the Week.

MAC & Disney Team Up For Venomous Villains Collection!!!

disney+villains MAC & Disney Team Up For Venomous Villains Collection!!!

This just in from WWD:

MAC Cosmetics is teaming up with Disney to create a limited edition color collection, intended to launch globally in late September in all MAC locations. The products will feature four Disney characters, on which the brand is keeping mum at the moment — although with a collection name of Venomous Villains, it is assumed that we’re not talking Donald Duck and Minnie Mouse here. Lipstick, powder, lip gloss and blush shades will be sold, ranging in price from $12 to $29.50.

Are you as excited for this collection as I am?!?! You just know the packaging is going to be off the chain. What I can’t wait for is the shade names.

I’ve got so many ideas…

Perhaps a lipstick or Lipglass in Cruella Crimson? Or some fantabulous new concealer inspired by The Lion King’s Scar? There are a whole bunch you can take from Sleeping Beauty…like a gothic, compact purse mirror that pays homage to Maleficent or a raven black eyeliner named Diablo. The Little Mermaid (my favorite Disney animated film eva) also provides a plethora of product possibilities. What about an double-ended eyeliner called Flotsam and Jetsam? Or maybe a palette of poor unfortunate shadows? And can’t you just picture a juicy, red nail polish that no beauty – sleeping or otherwise – could resist? I’d call it Ambien Apple.

What do you think of this collection? Do the Disney Princesses deserve a collection too? Any clever product/name suggestions for MAC?

Celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic is answering your burning beauty questions!!! Every Monday, he will answer a beauty/skin care question as part of a weekly column on Spoiled Pretty, Makeup Mondays with Mario.
Hi Mario!

I just have to say I love love love your work, it’s so flawless and beautiful! My problem is I am a latina with fair skin and I recently started bed tanning a bit, I really don’t want to overdue it because of the damaging effect it has in the long run. So my question is what kind of self tanner can I use for my face and body? I’ve also seen some for daily use. What would you recommend?

Thank you very much!
-Ilsse

self+tan Makeup Mondays With Mario: Beautiful and Bronzed

Ilsse,

The first thing you should do is stop tanning! There is nothing that will heal or correct the negative effects that tanning has on your skin. You may not see the damage today, but it will appear later in life. I am, however, a fan of self tanners and use them myself. Try L’oreal Paris Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist. It’s very easy to use yourself, comes out evenly and does not smell bad. If you prefer a creme or lotion, try the St.Tropez tanning line which has unique products to help you look tan and healthy. Whichever products you choose to use, you should always exfolliate you skin prior to application, avoid too much product on the elbows, feet, knees and any area that tends to get blotchy. Also keep your toenails and fingernails covered in Vaseline when appyling self tanner, as they will stain the nails an unnatractive yellow shade of yellow. Moisturize with a non-oily moisturizer to preserve the color longer. It’s alot of work keeping your face and body beautiful and bronzed but it’s worth it.

Thanks for visiting Makeup Mondays with Mario!

xo,
Mario

Put The Breaks On Hair Breakage

Posted on by daneen in Conditioner, Hair, Shampoo | Leave a comment

You know that line, “Break yourself, fool!” from Superbad? Well, my hair was taking that euphemism literally.

My hair has been delicate, dry, and damaged – thanks to 25 years of chemical relaxers and a recent dependence on hot tools. As a result of my hair abuse, my ends were breaking off left and right. Every time I brushed or styled my hair, it was a sorry sight – little, broken hairs all over my shirt, bathroom counter and floor. Every day, I was pulling a Jay-Z and brushing my shoulders off.

My hair was, basically, breaking off as quickly as it was growing – which explains why my hair hasn’t gotten longer in the past seven years. And let me tell you…it was like salt in the wounds when a well-meaning friend suggested I “grow my hair out.”

Obviously, if I stopped straightening, blow drying and using a flat iron on my hair, it would be in much better shape. But let’s get real – that’s not going to happen. Lucky for me, Pantene solved my catch 22 conundrum by developing a line of products that spoke to my issue. Seriously, the product description reads like it should have been prefaced with “Yo…listen up, Daneen.”

pantene+relaxed+and+naturalbreakage+defense Put The Breaks On Hair BreakageThe Pantene Pro-V Relaxed & Natural Breakage Defense collection is designed to strengthen hair against damage and provide 90 percent less breakage in one month.

The Present: Hair that you notice everywhere – on your brush, clothes and bathroom sink. The Future: Resilient, strong, healthy hair that has less shedding due to breakage.
Pantene Pro-V Relaxed & Natural Shampoo, Breakage Defense thoroughly cleans hair with a rich, airy lather without weighing hair down. It has a unique conditioning formula that makes hair easier to comb, helping to prevent breakage. And it leaves hair strong against damage, hydrated and healthy-looking. Pantene Pro-V Relaxed & Natural Conditioner, Breakage Defense has a Pro-Vitamin formula that is specially designed for women of color to help strengthen and moisturize each hair strand – from root to tip. It also shields each hair strand from future damage.

I’ve been using this shampoo/conditioner combo for the past two months and have noticed a decrease in shedding. I’m hoping that if I keep this up – and lay off the ole flat iron a bit – mermaid hair might be in my future. I’ve always dreamed of mermaid hair…

Anyway, if you’re like me and you want to put the breaks on hair breakage, I recommend you give these products a try.*

*I believe Pantene is doing some re-formulation and discontinuing these products, so they are a little bit hard to find. Online shopping would be your best bet.
